My trip to the ER..it was strange! (long)

I went downhill pretty quick yesterday. I woke up not feeling 100% but I figured it was just b/c of the previous nights of insomnia. By early afternoon I was feeling really nauseous and I had a lot of pain in my abdomen and lower back. By the time DH got home I was miserable and I had a lot of blood in my urine (sorry TMI ). I also had that feeling of having to pee even after I had just gone. I figured I had a UTI but I was surprised by how much pain I was having so quickly. DH insisted I go to Urgent Care, by that time it was 11:30 and about ZERO degrees outside..UGH!

After driving to two different 24 Hour Urgent Care Centers that were CLOSED :confused: we finally ended up at the ER. We had to make 3 stops during that time (20 minutes) for me to use the bathroom.

I give my info at admissions than a nurse takes my BP and temp. She takes me to this room that was across from the nurses' station and there was a long desk of computers with some doctors sitting there. She leaves me with the door open. So everyone that walks by is of course staring at me as I'm sitting there in discomfort. Another nurse comes in and starts asking me the same questions that the first nurse had asked. Then another lady from admissions comes in with this computer on a cart to ask me questions about my ethnicity preferences. They leave and another nurse comes in to tell me that they sent my specimen to the lab and the doctor will be with me shortly. I'm (trying) to sit there for quite some time in quite a bit of pain when one of the docs at the computer stands up and starts walking towards my room. This was after about 10 minutes of me just sitting there watching him on the computer, drinking coffee and chatting with folks. You won't believe this though, instead of coming into my room he stops midway between his computer and my room and asked me "Are you having pain in your lower back and abdomen?" Once again (for the FOURTH time) I said "YES" then he turned around and sat back down at the desk! He didn't even come into my room! Once again I wait trying to find a comfortable position b/c I was feeling really uncomfortable and painful. Two of the nurses came back in to tell me that they are still waiting then the doctor gets up shortly after that and once again stops outside of my room and tells me that I have an obvious bladder and kidney infection. I'm not exaggerating when I tell you that he was standing about 20 feet from me in the main area. He turned around and went back to his computer. About 10 more minutes pass and the first nurse that I saw came into the room with my paperwork and meds. For pain she had two 500mg tablets of Vicodin!! She asked if I wanted both and I said "do you want me on the floor!" I'm 5'2" and 108lbs. I hate taking strong pain meds but by that time I would've set my hair on fire if I thought I would feel better. I walked out pass the doctor who didn't even bother to turn around.

Needless to say by the time I got home I was feeling pretty loopy and DH had to help me get into the house and into bed. I'm feeling a bit better today, the meds are making me nauseous. I'm trying to choke down some shredded wheat w/o milk. Not sure how long I'll be able to keep it down.

Can you believe that doctor! He looked to be around 60 yrs old and I'm wondering if his bedside manner has been that horribly insensitive his whole career! WTH!:eek::mad:

Thanks for reading! :)

OMG!!I feel for you!! my friend brought her daughter to the er the other night and they left her sitting in the waiting room for 3 hours(her daughter was hit in the eye with a wiffle bat) she finally left because her daughter fell a sleep. The following day child protective services showed up at her front door because she left without being seen.

I am so sorry, Chastity!!! I had bladder and kidney infection before it is really painful. I can't believe that doctor though, well, not really, I can! I have come across quite a few doozies myself.

I hope you feel better soon!

Some doctors are useless. Why go into the field if you don't want to really bother with the patient?? I am sorry - it's not right to put anybody through that, much less one who is in such misery. Hope you are doing better.

Hope you're feeling better. I hate dealing with doctors. When I was caring for my dad (before him went into a nursing home) it seemed like non stop appointments with various specialists. Every visit was the same - Doc "Why are you here today" Me - "Because you told us to come back in three months" Doc - "How's he doing?" Me - "Same as three months ago" Only reason I went was because the doctor wouldn't renew his prescriptions without seeing him.

Thanks ladies :) I am feeling a bit better today but I'm not sure I can take 10 days of this nausea from the meds. Hopefully that will get better.

One of the meds causes my urine and saliva to turn orange, so I've gone from red to orange.

I'm still in disbelief over the whole ER visit. I wish my DH could've been in the room with me instead of in the waiting room. I wonder if my experience would've been the same with him in there with me.

I've never watched a full episode of House but I've seen little snippets. I must say that Dr. House is 100% more personable than the doctor from last night.

Mary..I'm sorry that happened to your friend. I must agree with Catherine about how shameful it is that our healthcare system is in such disaray.

ETA: Thanks Shana. Yeah the Dr. seemed to be pretty miserable but I'm sure he's getting paid a pretty penny..unfortunately. :(

Gabrielle..I'm sorry you had to go through all of that with your dad. It's really sad how some people can be so clueless and insensitive.

I have been in the ER many times in the past year and your experience sounds pretty familiar. The doctors I have had haven't discussed my case while not in my room, but they have had other issues. I am allergic to the sheets in the hospital so one of the first times I went in last year I told them how to get "hypoallergenic sheets" (that is what the housekeeping department calls them). They didn't get them and didn't get them, I ended up laying on the floor of the ER for 7 hours and they didn't care. They knew what was happening and said they couldn't figure out how to get the sheets even though we told explained in great detail how to get them. Another time they did an ultrasound for my gallbladder even though I told them it was taken out the year before. Once the doctor came in and said, I am not kidding "Congratulations there is nothing wrong with you". I will do almost anything to not go to the ER. Oh, and when I was in the hospital last month I got a UTI from the cathedar. When I told the nurse she told me I didn't have an infection and I should just do my kegels. My husband INSISTED they test for a UTI (it took over an hour of complaining) and she was very nice after that.

I'm a nurse and what that Doc did is a violation of hospital policy. He violated your privacy by standing outside your room and shouting personal questions at you and that's a huge no-no. He violated what we call "HIPAA" in healthcare. You need to write that on the feedback form that you'll get in the mail. It was not OK for him to do that. I have seen some bad docs but that's a doozy.
