My son has a wart!! YUCK!!

Okay, that he has a wart is obviously not earth-shattering news. However, what surprised me was our retired nurse friend said that warts are a virus. When I looked it up it turns out that it's part of the HPV human papillomavirus family! Holy cow!! She explained to my DS that if he scratches it it could spread! The good news is that it has scared him straight to be MUCH more diligent about NOT biting his nails or scratching those soo irritating eczema patches. Plus he now WANTS to wash his hands.

Bless his little heart, though, he's soo embarrassed by it, he cried a little bit.
:( I bought that Wart-removal stuff which we're gonna start him on.

Yucky-doodle!

Pam

Good luck with the over the counter stuff! I mentioned one I had to my dermatologist and he froze it! OMG!! That was the worst pain I think I've had in ages! Of course, I had mine for quite a while before I brought it up and it took 2 treatments. The second one wasn't quite as bad.

If you have to take him somewhere to have it removed, ask if they do laser removal before letting them burn it off.

Thanks, Tricia. I am hoping this stuff as well as keeping it covered will help kill the virus by suffocating it. One of my girlfriends puts duct-tape over her kid's warts. My DS has very sensative skin so I think that would hurt A LOT to take it off! I don't have the heart to do that to him.

Pam

I also read on a holistic remedy website that rubbing a banana peel on it will eliminate the wart in a couple of weeks. I almost forgot about that! If he's not allergic, that may be another possible option!

Hi Tricia- Interesting ....I'm guessing it's the inside of the banana peel that you rub on the wart??

Pam

I've heard the duct tape one and the banana peel. I think it's the inside of the banana peel. Also clear nail polish. I think the nail polish is supposed to work the same as the duct tape, but you don't have to peel it off. You just keep layering it one. I think those remedies take time, though 3-4 weeks I believe, but it wouldn't hurt him. As a side note, clear nail polish also works on skin tags.

My dd who is 9 had 3 warts along her thumb nailbed. We started using the wart remover stuff a few days ago and they are disappearing. She didn't like the liquid stuff so we switch to the bandaid like ones and she likes it much better.

I didn't see the band-aid stuff.. what brand was it? The liquid did sting for a minute and he cried :( but after it got in there he said it felt better. I put a band-aid on it after but they are the tough-strips so it hurts a bit to take them off. Are the band-aid things super sticky?

Thanks a bunch!
Pam

They are Dr. Scholl's Clear Away. She said that they don't make her finger numb like the liquid. We were camping all weekend and no trouble with the bandaid falling off from being in the water. It just looks like a little bandaid and we switch it every 2 days.

Hi Pam,

For what it's worth, two of my kids have had warts frozen off and both tolerated the pain very well, if you should end up going that route. My dd was about 7 at the time and my ds is 11 and just had it done about a month ago. Unfortunately, ds's had gotten too big to treat with the band-aids. The doctor said he would need to come back for a second treatment, but the first one took care of it.

Good Luck!

Julie

Pam...I can talk warts with you until the cows come home. I had them for 10 years. They started when I was 15 and I was so devastated by them that I started a part-time job just so I could pay my dermatology bills. I had seed warts, tiny ones, ALL OVER my hands. Did I say devastating? I was convinced (and completely traumatized) at age 15 that I was never going to be able to wear a wedding ring with pride. It took 10 years and several different methods to finally get rid of them...but I had a wonderful dermatologist who took such good care of me. And now I don't have a single one.

In any event, I know your first reaction might be "yuck." But speaking from experience, I think the worst thing you can do is get alarmed or grossed out. If your son is anything like me, he's looking at his parents to know it's going to be ok and that there's nothing to be alarmed about. And if you are fearful about or disgusted by it, he will most likely sense it, even if he doesn't actually hear you say the words.

My point is...I don't know of anyone who had as bad a case as I did, or for such a long period of time. But they did completely go away...no sign of them in over 10 years. And it wasn't about anything I did or didn't do that brought them on (I was very healthy). I hope you will pass on to your precious son that he isn't diseased or damaged in any way...I'm sure you have done this many times...but maybe if you share a story from a fellow wart survivor! ;)

I am so happy to talk to you about this anytime. I am an "expert" on freezing, acid, surgical removal, and the less effective over-the-counter options. Please feel free to PM my anytime through the process if you have any questions.

Hope this helps!

Okay, wart experts, help me out, please!

My 13 yr old DS has a wart on his cheek by his jaw line. It just popped up, and he is very self conscious about it. What do you guys recommend for removal of a wart on the face?

I have a recurring wart on my forehead. I just go and get it frozen off by my doctor whenever it decides to pop up. I don't find the freezing process very painful, but perhaps that is just because of the location.

I would however, like to know why it keeps coming back! It can be gone for a year or more and then it starts to show up - each time it seems to divide. Right now it looks like a cluster of four small warts.

I used to get warts when I was a teenager and highly recommend the freezing method of removal. It is quick, was painless for me (I had the warts on my hands), and didn't leave scars like the burning method did. Compound W is messy, burns, and usually the warts come back. Freezing always took care of my warts in one treatment!

On a side note, I spent a summer swimming in salt water and hanging out at the beach when I was 18 and the combo of salt and sun completely dried up my remaining warts and they never returned...

ETA: I see that there are several OTC freezing kits available nowadays. I'm not sure how effective they are as I used to just go to the doc who froze my warts off with liquid nitrogen.

Conni, please see my reply above. I began to develop warts around your son's age. I highly recommend finding a dermatologist that your son likes, and developing a professional relationship with him/her. It usually isn't much to have a wart professionally removed...around $65 after your initial office visit. And, for me, there was a peace of mind that came with having a doctor remove it (over the counter remedies were NOT effective in my case) and knowing I could make an appointment if it came back.

Coradora...mine came back also, for over 10 years. And it was just like you said...they came back in clusters sometimes. The key is to get to the root of the primary wart (sometimes you may not know which one is the primary) and kill it at the root. I see that you have had them frozen. Has your doctor also removed them during the freezing process? I found the most effective treatment to be the "surgical" removal immediately following a freezing. First, the doctor/dermatologist freezes the area, then scrapes/removes the wart at the root with a small surgical instrument. It's essentially a pulling out at the roots and leaves a small (but temporary) hole...and I've never had scarring (but I didn't have them on my face). It usually isn't any more painful than the freezing because the area is so numb.

Like I said, it took a few years. But they did eventually ALL go away and now you cannot tell I ever had them.

Hope this helps...please PM me if you ever want more on the wart saga.

Last summer, I had two appear on the bottom of my feet (one on each foot). They were PAINFUL to get rid of...probably because they were on the balls of my feet, right where stepping pressure is. I had to go in and get them frozen, scraped, frozen, scraped,...until they were finally gone! They couldn't do it all at once because the roots were pretty deep by the time I went. I thought they were strange calluses because they didn't have a particularly "warty" appearance.

I would highly recommend taking him to the doctor. If it's just a standard run of the mill kind of thing, his regular doc can take care of it for him (he doesn't need to see a derm). My son recently had one on his foot - the freezing treatment hurt a bit right then and there, but once he left the office it was fine. We just kept a bandaid on it to keep him from touching/irritating it. 2 treatments and it was totally GONE. No biggie.

I think the at home treatments take much longer, and you are "fiddling" with it more - it sounds like you are all having problems with this so getting it resolved sooner rather than later would be best for him for a variety of reasons.

Hi all!

Thank you very much for all of the replies. I found the stick-on patch thing and will give that a try. I think it might sting less than the liquid and should be easier to apply since the fear-factor of a band-aid is a lot less than the sting of the liquid!

Jonezie, you are sooo right about my response!! It just sort of popped out of my mouth! Which is weird since he has had eczema, impetigo and other skin issues before which I handled quite well. I think part of it was because he came into my office and stuck his warty hand in my face! Ack!!!  Woa!! I was NOT ready for that one :p

I'll letcha know how the patch thingy works!!

Pam
