My first haircut

Most people on the boards know that two years ago I got very sick and had to take chemo to get well.

Anyway, the last time I got a haircut was in 2005-October, when, at my request, my horseback riding instructor took a pair of horse clippers to my head and shaved off the last of my hair.

My hair started growing again in January 2006. I haven't had a hair cut since theat fateful day in October 2005. My hair is wacky curly on the ends and wavy from my roots to about halfway down.

I've made a hair appointment for Decmeber 27th to finally get a handle on my hair. Supposedly the hair stylist has a lot of experience cutting curly hair. I'm actually a little bit scared and superstitious about getting my hair cut! What if she cuts it and my beloved curls go away?

What if she makes it worse? What can she possibly do to make my hair look better? I sure have been to enough hair stylists to know they can certainly screw it up! I mean curly hair's gonna do what it wants to do, right?

The lady who answered the phone said she was going to schedule extra time for my appointment so I could get use to the idea of a haircut again and talk with the stylist about what I wanted, but I'm really at a loss (no pun intended - heehee :p). What should I ask for?

I know it seems very silly, but it's really kind of freaking me out. I mean, being bald was easier - haha!

Thanks for letting me vent!

You are amazing Susan! I understand your nervousness. I don't have curly hair so I can't advise. I think it's great that they are setting some extra time aside to talk with your stylist. I so hope it turns out to be a great experience and that you are happy with the outcome. Keep us updated. (I know I didn't help at all but just wanted to wish you the best!!!) Enjoy the holidays! You are a miracle!

I don't have curly hair either so no advice there but I am excited for you. I am sure it will turn out great. I hope we get to see some pictures of the new "do". I love getting a new hairstyle, makes me feel so good. Good luck!

Susan, I am so excited for you! What a great Xmas present to yourself!

Why don't you start small? Just ask her to trim & shape the ends for now. That way you can get a sense of whether you like her or not, the change won't be too dramatic, & you can decide after whether you want to go with a new style (although as a curly-head myself I don't think there's much out there other than maybe some layering at the bottom).

I don't *think* a haircut will take away your curls--lord knows I've been wishing that forever but it seems like haircuts make my hair even curlier. But in your situation, I guess w/hormonal changes & stuff, I don't know. So maybe just ask for about an inch off see how it goes.

Wow Susan, was a wonderful milestone!! I'm so happy for you. I'm sure everything will work out and you will come out of your appointment looking amazing!! You are an incredibly strong woman. Good Luck!! :)

I have curly hair so I understand - it's a totally different thing trying to style curly hair. I think since you have extra time with the stylist you should really focus on talking to that person about what you want; how do you want to fix it? What kind of length do you want? How much time do you want to spend on it? Also look through some magazines for a style you think you might like. There's lots of magazines in the stores now that are just about hairstyles.

Good luck - I hope it turns out exactly how you want it. The way you described your hair makes me think of the softest curls! And I would admit that I sometimes think being bald would be easier!

Let us know how things go! :)

Thanks for the tips! I will definitely be looking around in the magazines, but it is hard to find curly hairstyles, isn't it, since sleek and straight seems to be the thing?

Susan you are amazingly strong! I had to tell you my thoughts.

I looked on a web site, and thought you might find this one helpful.

Curly Hairstyles - Pictures of Curly Hair Styles (put this in your search engine). Many many pictures of curly hair and curly hair rules.

Hope this helps.

Susan congratulations .. what a milestone!!:)

I love Christina Applegates hair do .. if you watch any TV she is on "Samantha Who?" now and her hair is cut shorter (above her shoulders) and has big curls .. I just love that hair style. At least it may be one to check into!

And no matter what style you get ... enjoy .. that will be one incredible hair cut no matter what!! Again congratulations!! :D

Wow, how exciting! I have super curly hair, so for me a longer length w/ layers keeps things tamed down. Maybe just try a trim and get things evened out and you can always go shorter next time! Good luck!

Susan,

You've really come so far and are always such an inspiration to me and so many others here.

I'm also a curly girl and your hair sounds kind of like mine. It's curlier on the ends than the roots. Although it seems like each day is different. My hair has a mind of its own. :)

A couple of sites that you might like are www.naturallycurly.com (lots of info) and my favorite products www.ouidad.com (great products - the best I've found for curly hair - and she now has a campaign going called Curls for a Cure because she had breast cancer in 2001 and her mother died of breast cancer - she wants to raise $250,000 and she's raised $149,000 I think).

Anyway, good luck and have fun!!!

Susan

I also have very curly hair and I like it just above the shoulder. I too am looking for a cut and I know how you feel, all the magazines show very pretty straight hair and the curly styles all look so unkept to me. Good luck whatever you decide-I also think you should just get a trim and see how you feel after that.

Sincerely,

Lisa

I *looooove* naturally curly.com! It's my home away from Cathe forums!

I actually found the salon I'm going to on naturallycurly.com.

I probably will wind up with a little trim, not much more. I'm afraid once the really curly stuff (which I love) is gone, through a trim or whatnot, then my hair won't be special anymore!

I'm going to try and get my hubby to take a pic of my hair after I've just styled it and then try and put it on a picture trail. Then take a pic after my visit to the salon.

Thanks again for all the encouragement!

JUST WOW - you are amazing!

I agree - don't do anything too drastic for now. Just a trim to start would give you a feel for a hair cut without freaking you out too much. But BE REALLY CLEAR with the hair stylist! I wasn't too clear or adamant about trimming my bob with this new hair stylist I went to in October. She had just gotten back from a workshop at Vidal Sasoon in Santa Monica and wanted to try a new hair technique she learned. I ended up with layers, bangs and no bob - I'll be spending the next several months still trying to grow back my graduated bob. Edie
