My drunk secretary at work

It just never ceases to amaze me how addictions not only affect the addicted but also the people around them. Actually, it affects the people around them more negatively as they have to deal with the "reality" of the situation while the addicted stay in the little world of "denial". This worman has done an outstanding job of deflecting her issues onto everyone around her.

I wonder why the situation doesn't bother your boss as much as it bothers you? I say that because I notice that this stuff bothers me much more than other people but I know why that is in my case.

Maybe she's got some 8x10 glossies somewhere . . .;-)

EEEEEEEEWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW!!!!!!!! Lorrie if you saw this woman you'd know how vomit-inducing that is!

Like I said, my boss is a coward. He knows if we do something about it she will sue. AND she will win. Sad huh?

I can have the police stop her but the really sad thing is they'll let her go b/c of where she works. Poochy, you have no idea how far "politics" goes in a situation like this.

Wow, this woman has more power than your boss. If that's the case, she should be making more than the $65K, LOL!

I know it's no joking matter but as I see it, it's of course her fault for creating the situation but your boss is more at fault for letting it continue.

You are definitely caught in the middle x( .

Oh Candi there's no doubt, it falls on my boss. He's created this culture where people think they can get away with pretty much anything--and they can. It got much worse when he was in an accident last March--major shoulder surgery--& decided to just stop coming to work. He didn't show up at all for a month, then started coming in for a few hours a day. It wasn't until maybe a month ago he actually started working more than 5 hours a day. It's a SHOULDER INJURY for god's sake. You'd think he had a brain tumor removed. Maybe he NEEDS to have a brain tumor removed.

Now department heads think they can work 5 hours a day, that they can skip night mtgs "just because," that if they don't complete something on time nothing will happen (b/c nothing will), that they can ignore directives from city council b/c nothing will happen (b/c nothing will). It's a disaster. I swear, does no one have any sense of responsibility anymore?

So, the end result was both my boss & his secretary were either physically out sick or mentally out sick, leaving me holding the bag. See why I get a little bitchy sometimes? }(

Laura,

And you're the bad guy because you think people should earn their pay!!! Isn't it ironic?

UGH!!! x(

Laura-

Is your City Council aware of this problem? If so, and they are not doing anything about it, maybe a letter from someone you know to the local paper informing the residents of this situation and that the council isn't doing anything about it. Also, can the City Attorney help?

Joanne

TV stations have reporters who expose city workers, police, etc., who are drunk on the job or hang out in bars or donut shops while being on city time. Someone should call the media in for this one and have the situation exposed that way. I wonder if they take anonymous tips. Got a local TV station that does that?

Yes, I am the princess b*tch at town hall (there is a queen b*tch & we're pretty close, we can empathize w/each other & yes, we're the two who do most of the work--thank goodness it's a small town!). The unions REALLY hate me LOL.

You should've seen this place when I first started here--I actually had to write a dress code b/c said boss's secretary wore sweatpants to work. SWEATPANTS for pete's sake! And SNEAKERS!!!!!!! Yeah, she's the executive secretary to the highest ranking official in town? :eyes rolling:

Joanne, some of the councilmembers are aware (they do have to attempt to communicate w/her on occasion), but every time the issue comes up my boss scares the crap out of them w/the lawsuit issue. It's just disgusting. x(

Hi Laura,

Just wanted to add more thoughts your way.

Here is a chance to help a fellow human being. She has a disease in which she has no control of. The only way she will get help, is if you don't enable her what so ever. Don't do any of her jobs, even if it means you can't do yours. She has responsibilities, and if you do them for her, she won't get repremended and she also won't be seen by others that she is messing up.

Intervention is a way to help her big time. If she flips out, that might be a good thing for everyone to see, including herself. And while she is looking at all the reactions on people's faces she also might see how she is affecting people around her. But then that is what intervention is, telling the truth about someone in serious trouble, and helping them recognise it. Intervention needs an environment that is caring, kind, and very truthfull, to the point that you hope she can see (from everyone's testimonials) that she needs help. It's the kindest thing that anyone can do for her. And it is the most caring.

If it is as you say a no win situation, then I'm sorry for your secretary. And you must go elsewhere to grow and have a better enviornment for yourself. I would not work in a place as you described. Sounds like your boss has problems of his own.

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

LauraMax:

I agree that you should stop doing her work. If she can't do it herself, and that means you can't get your job done on time, well...there's one write-up (or whatever you call it in your situation). Making $65,000 per year means she should be able to spin gold from paper shreddings! She should be the Creme de la creme of secretaries! I don't care what state you're in, $65,000 is what they pay the super-duper Assistants (you know, the ones with a big red S on their chest). I should know, I am an Executive Assistant, and I'm appalled that I make about half what your abomination makes and yet she's getting paid the big bucks! What a disgrace.

So, document, document, document, and write-up, write-up, write-up, and build a file so large she won't have a leg to stand on...just so long as you discuss the issues with her and get her signature on the forms. NOTE: My company actually developed an incident form, and when someone does something "bad", an "Incident" gets written up with when it happened, what happened, who was involved, how the action impacted others or the company, and what corrective action needs to be taken by the employee, and then at the bottom there's a place for the employee to sign and date that they've been coached through the incident, a place for the manager to sign, and a place for HR to sign. All three parties are included in the coaching / discussion so there won't be a he said/she said dilemma later. And if the same incident occurs again, there's a place on the form where it can be noted that this is the second or third discussion on this topic. We have a three strikes and you're out rule at my company.

Maybe that will make things a little more tolerable or stir up eventual change until you can find a new job.

Good luck!
