My annual hair removal thread

Or maybe it's biannual like A-jocks. I don't recall. Anyway, I haven't made much progress in all these years. I still haven't figured out a good way to remove unwanted hair from my upper lip. Chin hairs are painless to pluck, but upper lip hairs are so painful I can't even bring myself to attempt it. Waxing is not an option for me because they require you to grow the hair out before waxing it. I have light skin and dark, coarse hair and I am NOT going more than one day au naturale, thank you very much. So I wind up very lightly shaving with a razor, but that area of my face is so delicate, even the shaving is painful.

Should I try lasar hair removal for my upper lip? Help, please!

maybe

I did the laser hair removal and like you I have dark hair and light skin. It sort of works. And, you should know that on that part of your body its likely to hurt. It worked to a certain extent. It is lighter and more fine. It did not go away completely. And, its expensive. Most places want you to commit to several sessions. If you have the money, give it a shot, otherwise try a little bit of shaving gel and an eyebrow razor, push your tongue up under your lip to make it a more flat surface. I still use a razor.

Try threading. I love it and won't ever have anything else done ever on my face. I've blistered too many times from bad waxing (it looks really awful on the eyebrows when they screw up with too much heat). Threading is wonderful....quick with no bumps or rashes. (I have blond fine har...so laser would never be an option for me.)

Thanks, Robin. Do you know how long the hair has to be before they can remove it by threading? And how badly does it hurt on the upper lip?

The first time I did it, I didn't think I had anything on my upper lip and I know she was removing hair (she did my entire face)...I was shocked and impressed. It's not totally painfree but 100% better than waxing in every way...(almost everytime I got waxed I end up with awful bumps or red marks that lasted for days). I've never had any side effects from threading. I can walk and shop in public afterwards without looking like a hideous monster. ;) I could never do that after I was waxed....I always welted up.

ETA: Hair does not have to be any length....

Robin, thank you so much! I just located a place near my office that does upper lip threading for $5 and eyebrows for $8, and it got lots of good reviews! I'll try it this week. Yippee! :D

Nancy, will you please come back and let us know how it goes? I'm in the same boat and would love to find somthing that actually works. How I HATE bleaching.

Facial hair

I've had good success with the Nair "brush-on" depilatory for the face. I recently purchased a battery-operated facial epilator @ Bed, Bath & Beyond. I'm very pleased with its results. Hope you find a good solution! ;)

I've been doing electrolysis for a little over a year now. I have hormone issues so I get really "male" facial hair patterns. We first focused on my chin/beard area and then later my lip and now my sideburns. I love it and its totally worth it to me. I saw someone one day on my way to an appt and he asked me where I was going and I told him and he just looked at me funny and said that I didn't seem to be one of those beard women and I chuckled saying, well, not now. I get charged $1/min and I only do 30min sessions every 2-3 weeks. Before that I used depilatories and waxing. But just to reiterate -- so much happier that I have to do neither now. Electrolysis is the only "permanent" method though some people have been really happy with laser. I have dark hair on dark skin so I didn't want to dump my money into laser and electrolysis was cheaper and I love my technician. HTH.
