Music Copyright - reposted question

Are workout songs copyrighted? If you use a song in your video, is it against copyright for somebody else to use is in their video?

In the dressage horse world, if you create a medley of music to ride your "freestyle" to, that particular collection/medley of music is copyrighted - no one else can ride their horse to that same music, you have to find something different. People spend lots of money putting together just the right collection of music to show their horse off to its best advantage, and I wondered how it was in the fitness world.

Just curious...

Yes,

The music is copyrighted, but as long as you pay the copyright fees the the person who wrote it then you can use it. Unless they wouldn't allow you to use it.

For exercise, you usually pay for a music arrangement that is copyrighted and that is why it costs more than just a regular cd. Typically, it's around $25 per exercise music cd.

Cathe is offering the music for sale now that she used in the intensity series. I don't know if she had it composed especially for her. Maybe she'll let us know about that part.

Hi Susan! There are special applications to fill out, as well as certain royalties and licensing fees that have to be paid in order to use a song for video. This is quite a long and involved process.

Certain music is available to anyone who takes these steps and is granted permission. If you would not like anybody else to have access to the specific songs as well as arrangement of songs you selected, then depending on the company that you are working with, you can (in some cases)get an exclusive contract drawn up to meet these terms and conditions. Of course that makes the already very high cost go even higher.

Also, there are completely different laws and licenses that apply to music being used for an aerobic class vs. music being used for a fitness video. What one purchases from a fitness music company to use in their classes, will not be allowed to be used for a video. They are completely different entities.

And in the case of someone making a fitness video soundtrack available for purchase, as we did, there again, is a whole separate set of conditions and requirements.

I hope that helped answer your question. Take Care:)

Cathe!

What if I were to use one of your songs from your CD I bought to make a different routine up for class?? Also, if I were to put that routine on a video for just the purpose of my instructors to learn the routine. (No sale involved) Thanks for your time and all you are doing lately (& in the past) to make us sooo very HAPPY! :7

Thanks for the answers, Cathe. I figured the music part was a complicated process, but I didn't reallize just how convoluted it could be.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my post!
