movie suggestion?

Setting aside the new DVD hysteria for a moment, I'm planning a nice quiet evening with my DH. We haven't watched a movie for a long time. Any suggestions for a rental? I like chick flicks and foreign films and he'll watch whatever I tell him.

Robin: I recently saw Friends with Money and thought it was excellent. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Smith is VERY entertaining - Angie must have been working out to Cathe... Wow.

It's not new, but one of my favorite "date" movies is "The Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind." Have you already seen it?

Have you seen Love, Actually? I adore that movie.

Another great Brit movie is Peter's Friends. Great cast, directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Do you like Shakespeare? Kenneth Branagh's Henry V is brilliant. Also, Rosenkrantz and Guildenstern are Dead with Gary Oldman and Tim Roth is brilliant.

Saw and loved Henry V. Saw R & G Are Dead on stage in high school and fell asleep. Maybe I'm more mature now.

I'll google some of these other suggestions and see what looks good.

You can never go wrong with the old standards:

It Happened One Night with Clark Gable & Claudette Colbert

Sabrina (my personal favorite) with the inimitable Audrey Hepburn

Funny Face

Casablanca - Need I say more

Moonstruck - Cher and Nicholas Cage

The Philadelphia Story

Adams Rib

I could rent all of them and have a romance/comedy weekend festival:)

My husband and I recently rented The Lake House with Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. It was a good movie. More of a chick flick but my husband actually enjoyed it. It was different. Plus, how could you not want to see Keanu. Yummy!!!

Try A Very Long Engagement. It's a newer movie from Jean-Pierre Jeunet (he directed Amelie) and it stars Audrey Tautou. It's French, a beautiful love story/mystery set during WWI. I don't think I've ever actually seen a more beautifully photographed film. DH and I both loved it!
Although, I have to say that I also second Shelley's excellent taste in movies :p as DH and I own Immortal Beloved and have seen Love Actually twice.

Well, these aren't foreign, but are kind of "chicky."
Plus, it seems like a good weekend for Jack Nicholson.
How about As Good As It Gets or Somethings Gotta Give?

Hope you both enjoy whatever you pick!

I've seen All About my Mother, but I'll be looking for the other 2, Gayle. Have you seen Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown? Same director as All About. It's one of my favorites.

My library has an excellent foreign film section. Even better than the rental places. I love how long my list is getting, since this is the time of year we watch movies most. I love a nice quiet Friday night with DH, a bottle of Zin and a good movie.

I checked my library and they have both the Red Violin and Lovers if the Arctic Circle. Now I have too many choices...what to do , what to do....

<<Have you seen Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown? Same director as All About. It's one of my favorites.>>

I always seem to catch this movie about half-way through. I usually watch most of my foreign films on IFC, but I think I need to break down and rent this one. :)

Anything Almodovar is great. Interesting to watch from a plot perspective and cinematography, as well. Women on the Verge is hysterical.
I just saw A Very Long Engagement, and it was great.
In America is awesome.
