Monkeys in Hats

Is anyone else bothered by monkeys in hats? Elephants in tiaras? Dancing cats?

I'm not a big animal lover in all honesty, but I have to say it bothers me when I see animals humiliated for entertainment, dressed up in some cutesy fashion. I just saw a circus commerical and the animals looked pathetic and unhappy. Am I crazy? I don't know why this bothers me so much.

ETA: Just wanted to make clear that I am talking about "professional" animals here, not animals whose owners put antlers on them at Xmas time or booties in the rain!!

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming ‘Wow - what a ride!’ — Peter Sage

I'm not as bothered by cats and dogs in get-ups (I used to dress my cat in doll clothes when I was a kid), but in most cases, I don't like animals (beyond cats and dogs) used for entertainment purposes.

I always wonder, as well, what happens to them when they are no longer "entertaining" or how some of them are trained to do some tricks.

Hey sparrow,
You're not the only one who feels this way. I hate that, too. I hate it when people dress their dogs or cats up like a child as well. Animals have fur, period. I'm a HUGE animal lover but there's a line. I don't treat my animals as humans. I don't get people putting dresses on dogs, and cats, taking them to Santa Claus at XMas having their portraits taken with Santa like a little kid. But that is me. I won't do that.

Yes, I am disturbed by it too. I love animals.

I did buy some doggie sweaters for Speck, I don't make her wear them. I tried them out on her and she hates that kind of stuff. I guess she doesn't mind shivering in the cold. They are just spoiled. I tuck Speck in her bed at night as she likes to be covered up completely and Stinky just likes her back rubbed before she goes off to sleep.

As long as we're clear on that, 'cuz I've been know to TRY TO get my cats to wear Santa hats and such! But just for a short time.

Yes, it bothers me too. I don't get the point of it.

I am glad you cleared the santa hats n stuff for doggies and kitties, though:D

LOL, Kathryn. My sister has an array of holiday bandanas for her Aussie. I think those are really cute. I guess I am talking more about animals who are forced to perform. Bugs me.

My DD is thirteen and wants to be a zoo keeper when she gets older. She simply adores animals. She will not watch any commercial or allow me to buy any product from any company that uses animals in this fashion. As I agree with her, I have problems. You're right - there's no point, you're degrading the animal and you're degrading the product.

That being said, I do have a photo of my Aussie in his graduation cap and gown here... www.dogster.com/?224658 But he's a ham and enjoyed the photo session.

Christine, Tucker is darling! I'm a huge fan of Aussies since my sis got hers - Tess. She is so smart and sweet and fun to watch. Tess, not my sister! :p

Oh Christine!! I LOVE the picture of your dog in the cap and gown. What a sweetie! Does he have blue eyes? He's really beautiful.

Michele:)

Sparrow - THANKS!!! Aussies are incredible. Tucker is too smart for my own good, sometimes... Does your Tess grin? Nothing like being greeted after a hard day of work by a wiggling, grinning furrball. I have to laugh. Funny though, I got Tucker after meeting Tillie, my friend's Aussie. What's with the "T" names? LOL

PS - so I take it your sister is NOT smart, sweet and fun to watch? *wink*

Thanks Michele - didn't mean to hijack the thread!

No his eyes are brown. I think that photo makes him look so official - I call him Ambassador Tucker of the Canine Brigade...

I really hate it too. I read once that it can be very painful for "professional" animals to be dressed up - chimp feet aren't made to fit into roller skates.

I am bothered by this too. I am a huge animal lover and it just makes me sad to see these animals being forced to do such unnatural things for them. And your right none of them look happy. :-(

I think they look sad and humiliated and it's really hard for me to see it. And they're so perfect just the way they are!

It's horrible. I won't go to a circus. It's inhumane and just plain wrong to do that to wild animals.

I have no idea how they get them to do this. My dog - a pug, notorious for being unable to regulate their body temperature - won't even let me put a sweater on him when it's -20 out. I feel sometimes like it is really cruel to make him go outside, lol. But I guess it's fine for him (and just makes him go faster).
