Mom's - suggestions for music for kids?

I gave my daughter my portable cd player/radio for her bedroom. I was thinking I'd get her some cd's for her birthday and I asked her who she liked. She had no clue what I was asking her. She'll be 7 in June. I do know that I didn't start liking anyone in particular until I was in maybe 5th or 6th grade, so maybe I'm too early.

Do you have any suggestions of what is good for young kids? I won't get her Kidz Bop because I can't stand those things.

NOOOOOOO, don't get the Kidz Bop! We have several and I seriously was going to pull out the earplugs. My dd, who is 9 now likes Hannah Montana. She just got Vanessa Hudgens. She was the lead role in High School Musical. Those two CD's are tolerable. ;-)

I've made CD's for her from my music library. She picks the songs, so she's always happy with the finished CD.

The High School Musical CD is actually pretty good. Catchy tunes, nothing too offensive.

Emma Roberts is pretty good too (she's from the show Unfabulous).

Here's another vote for High School Musical. My 8 year old DS loves this CD. Some other ones would be Radio Disney Jams.

Not sure if it's still in print, but the kids I took care of loved "Stay Awake: Various Interpretations of Music from Vintage Disney Films." It's old Disney Classics sung by Suzanne Vega, Tom Waits, Aaron Neville, Sinead O'Conner, etc. My two favorites are "Baby Mine" sung beautifully by Bonnie Raitt (and I'm not even a big fan of hers)and The Replacements' version of "Cruella DeVille."

Good luck!

Justin Roberts--Great Big Sun and many others (possibly too young for your seven-year-old, but great for kids younger)

School House Rock

Enya was always a favorite with my girls. It was their starting out artist. Her voice is like butter.

Would she be interested in books on cd. Jim Weiss is a master storyteller and sells a variety of classics on cd. His Shakespere stories are perfect for your dd's age. He also has interesting biographies about Galieo and Archimedes. I don't have the catalog in front of me. I'm sure if you do a google search, you can find his website.

I can't help you much with the music. I started my girls on classical and instrumental music when they were younger. Their other cds include hymns and short scriptures put to music. They do enjoy jazz music and the Beetles. I bought them Beetles for Little People when they were little. It's Beetle songs sung by children. They've been hooked ever since.
