We've been doing a little lab work at our house. I have a hot-air popper but my kids like butter on their popcorn, and I hate how you can't really get it on evenly. I felt like we were using too much.
Soooooo . . . we experimented with the homemade paper-bag microwave method and got that down pretty good. But it was still kind of messy and I thought we could improve.
The final results are in.
My recipe:
1. Put 1/4 c popcorn kernels in a 2.5 quart Pyrex bowl.
2. Mix in 1/2 t olive oil and stir well.
3. Cover with vented microwave-proof cover. (I have one of those plastic microwave splatter shields that you put over food while reheating).
4. Microwave on high for 5 min. 30 sec. (in my microwave--times vary, of course).
5. Bowl is extremely HOT! Remove with potholders.
6. Add small amount of popcorn salt.
7. Scarf down.
Kids recipe:
1. Put 1T Smart Balance spread in pyrex bowl.
2. Microwave for 20 seconds to melt spread.
3. Mix in 1/4 C popcorn kernels.
4. Continue as above.
5. Remind kids to eat only at kitchen counter and not walk around house eating popcorn.
6. Vacuum popcorn from everywhere in house.
What is great about doing it in the bowl is that it cooks more evenly (even though it takes longer to pop), and you don't get burned clumps. More kernels pop, too. And, it's already in your serving bowl--except the bowl is hot, so watch out!
