I am a 55 years old male recovering from rotator cuff surgery an am looking for a challenging workout routine to start later this summer
I have done p90-x successfully but feel this was not very shoulder friendly

Is the STS designed primarily for women?
Are there any men with experience with this program?

my overall goal is to stay fit and shed some more body fat
I am not looking to bulk up
Is STS a good choice or are there any other Cathe programs to look at?
 
My husband does STS, its the only dvd workout he'll do now. He also did P90x (so did I) and to me STS is more rounded and complete, plus no boredom factor setting in. I am on my 4th rotation. As far as your shoulder goes, there are push-ups and pull-ups yes, but not like in P-90x. You can also sub if that is bothering you.

I do not feel that STS is a woman's-only lifting program. It is neutral to both genders, the music is perfect for lifting and there are men on the set too. Take a look at the Youtubes and you can get a better idea. Not to push the point, but if my husband finds it appealing, that is real sauce! He is as traditional as they get when it comes to Olympic style lifting.

I agree with DirtDiva. My husband and I are in the final weeks of a six month rotation of STS. We have done P90X several times, but prefer STS. Cathe does a great job in sequencing and explaining each meso cycle. I love her queuing and you don’t have the Tony annoyance factor. DirtDiva is correct about the repetitive nature of P90X; come on how many pushups and pull-ups can one person do? You do need to be aware of a couple things about STS, first it requires a lot more equipment than P90X. Cathe uses benches, step-up boxes, a full array of dumbbells and barbell weights, and pull-up bars. You may have most of these things already. The other caution is Cathe’s leg workouts are 10x harder than Tony’s. When my husband did her leg work out the first time, he couldn’t walk for a week. I am not exaggerating, beware of the calf pumps! Trust me this program might have a cute, petite woman on the cover but its built man tough!

:p Omg I am laughing at the vision of my husband limping and holding onto the handrail as he climbed the steps in our house. He was fried after the leg work the first time and that's when he got serious. In came the stereo system, heavier dumbells and a new curl bar for baby, not to mention more plates for the squat machine. He was serious! This ain't no wimpy man's workout...!

....just like a Chevy (or is that a Ford?)....I know my husband would love this and wish he would do it...but he has a gym membership with a buddy and is committed already.

I am in Meso 2 week 3 and I would think that the heavier bench presses might be hard on your rotator cuff...but STS is soooo modifier-friendly...you would be able to get around it. Another good thing about STS is that it is so structured and very much "business", and yet still pleasant which I think lends itself to being a man's workout program too.
