Mass building/loss on P90X?

I received my P90X DVD's and began the classic rotation on Monday, so I just finished day 4 (man, Yoga X is so hard!) I've watched all the DVD's one time through just to get familiar with them. Is it my imagination or is there alot of strength training without weights? I realize that some workouts use all weights like Shoulders and Arms, but there seem to be alot of workouts without them. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I'm just wondering if I'll lose any of the muscle I've built with all the Cathe weight work I do. Can anybody fill me in on their experience with this versus Cathe?

i'm not sure what you meen but 4 of the dvds use weights-shoulders&arms,chest back, back bi,and chest, shoulder tri.also legs and back. you can go very heavy on his upper body and is more effective than cathe. cathe is best for cardio and legs,tony-upper and core.

From my experience I definitly gain more muscle with P90X and Fast. It's an extremely good workout program. I'm at the end of phase 2 and am very happy with my progress so far. I use the 12 to 15 rep range. I can't imagine what type of gains I'd get with the 8 to 10 rep range. That would probably be to much muscle for me.

You will definetely gain muscle with p90x. You will see the results quickly. I'm on phase III now and loving it. I'm actually doint the 8-10 range - just because! Before p90x I could only do the chick pushups now I'm up to 15 -18 per set! Woo hoo!

The crane and pullup are still ellusive goals. For the most part I've followed classic but did a few weeks of doubles.

The results are most similar to S&H for me. You will NOT lose muscle - no way!

Oh P90X is definitely a muscle builder - even more so than Cathe's workouts - for the most part. I am chuckling a bit here as I'm so used to reading, "I just finished a P90X rotation - how do I keep the definition?"

Thanks so much ladies; guess I was off base with my initial impression. Now I'm off to do legs and back even though my body is sore from head to toe from Yoga X!

L/B is a great one! I've got yoga tonight! I use to hate that - now I love it! Except that ellusive crane!

Hey Shelly - glad to see you are going strong. Of course I knew you would be!

Hey Robyn - sorry I haven't been checking in. Things at work are really.... intense right now. But I'm still bringing it;)

I know this is a serious question so I apologize for laughing. But LOL! You are wondering if you'll lose your Cathe built muscles with the X Classic?

Ah, no. Not a chance. You'll get more strength gains with the X than you've ever thought possible. Enjoy the ride. :)

FWIW, I prefer the X leg work to Cathe's - I've gotten the best definition in my LB in my life doing the X. The combo of PlyoX, YogaX, Legs&Back, and Kenpo is magic for my lower body.

Honestly, I have never looked better OR been stronger than after P90x. I wonder if my body simply needed a change from Cathe....I am back on a PS kick now and loving it. But, I keep doing Plyo, 1/2 yoga and Chest and Back a few times a month.

I think we need to keep our minds and bodies open to other workouts. Its a good thing. deb

Don't EVER worry about losing muscle when you do non-weighted exercises! I would not call a pull-up "without weights," 'cause you're lifting your body weight!

Yeah, what HB said. I can do weighted back work with pretty darn heavy weights, but I still can't do an overhand wide grip pull-up unassisted:p

I was doing dishes and admiring my shoulders in the window reflection. My son caught me and yelled at me to Stop! One of the downsides is P90x is the people near and dear to you get use to gun shows ;) ---- S/A rocks! Well so does C/S/T and B/B and C/B and L/B. Ok they all do! I even love yoga now!

Mspina - I've seen your pics and definetely your legs look awesome! Just curious was that ever a focus area for you or always a better area?

Thanks again for letting me know about the mailbag. I don't think I would have seen it otherwise. It was so cool too :) Hmm I should go save it before it's gone!

I still can't do pullups but love doing the big boy pushups!

Thanks for the nice comment Robyn! My legs have always been uber strong, and muscular. I don't know if it's genetics, or years of playing basketball with the required "staying in a defensive squat until you pass out from leg fatigue" exercises our coach would make us do. That said, lately, it's been hard for me to get decent definition - that FINALLY happened after my X rotation. I'm not sure what it was - could be 100% related to my cleaned-up eating (I was always very good, but now I'm saintly), but I think it's more than that. It's always my focus area - my legs & glutes are my personal nemesis. I think I'm finally winning!

Did you guys all follow the eating plan/supplements as well or just the workouts?

I wish there was a way to check in with Cathe people on P90X. I'm not that crazy about the P90X forum on Beachbody. At least it's not the same as this forum and I enjoy hearing how you guys did/are doing and compare it with Cathe, etc.

I think the nutritional information is KEY to getting the greatest gains from the program. I followed it, but only at the macro-nutrient and suggested foods - i.e., lean proteins, healthy fats, whole grains - basically a pretty simple whole foods approach to eating, using their suggested macro nutrient ratios for each phase. It's been said a million times over the years that diet is the larger piece of the equation, and this is no different. You'll still make gains without paying attention to diet, of course, but you won't achieve the definition you could if you did pay close attention.

I think there was a P90X check-in over here, at least at one time. I don't know if it's still active.

Sophie - We've got a nice little check in going on over on beachbody. It's under my name. There are about 7 regulars. It's very different than here. It's a lot like the check in part of this site. Give it a try we'd love to see you! It's kinda cool there are 3 guys who check-in regularly

Thx Michelle- Good to hear you are winning the battle. I've got mine and I'm not winning yet.

How cool was this I just saw a friend - football coach and former AD at our HS. Anyhow I was picking up my sons backpack and said wow this is heavy (not sure if you have carried a HS kids back pack - OMG like 50lbs easily) and he said hey it should be easy for you - you've been working out. I told him better yet I got an email from the head guy! He was impressed :)

I've named Anne the Yoga Motivator Queen. She thinks we need to tell Tony. Her reply is the bottom of thread! She is though don't you think. Even Dave is liking it. I really like it a lot now :) Gotta get the 1st half in before the football game

Great! How do I find it on the message boards? I went to beachbody.com and message boards . . . how do I find you guys?
