I need to buy more foundation, but wondered is the expensive brands sold in dept. stores really worth it? I usually use Mabeline or L’Oreal, but was looking at Bobbie Browns website today and wondered if its necessary to spend $40 for a foundation. What do you think?

I think that most "experts" will tell you to spend money on foundation as opposed to lipstick, eye shadow, etc. However, I'm not sure they actually make a huge difference. I think it depends on whether you are happy or not with what you have been using. If it has been a while since you have bought new foundation you might want to first see if your 'regular' brand has developed any new formulas that you might want to try.

If you buy a drugstore brand that you don't like you're really only out about $10-12. The department store brands can run up towards $40. Also, L'oreal is actually the owner of department store brand Lancome. So those drugstore brands are not as 'cheap' as some would have you believe.

Just my .02:)

I have tried a TON of makeup and I've recently discovered Everyday Minerals makeup. I have oily skin but I use the intensive formula. It provides good coverage but looks very natural and it is easy to apply. The only drawback is if you spill the container and it can be hard to transport in travel. They do have travel sizes now, which helps. Anyway, it is affordable to me b/c little bit goes a long way, especially when I use the multi-tasking concealer first. I love playing around with the blush colors. They are so natural and I have yet to go wrong with anything I mix or wear as is. The application is quick and easy for me compared to liquid foundation. Anyway, the link is www.everdayminerals.com.

Keep in mind that most stores (Macy's and CVS, at least) will take back any and all makeup if you still have a receipt. So, take it home and try it. Just hang on to the receipt! They never give you a problem. I've done it with lipsticks, eye shadows and foundations.

I agree with Jennifer. Foundation is the most important part of your make-up. The problem with drugstore foundation is that there is no make-up expert there to help you choose the right one. Do you have a Sephora near you? They have almost every brand there, and the salespeople are experienced, so they can help you choose among all the brands. Tell them you want something on the less expensive side, and maybe they can find you something perfect and yet not too expensive. I strongly believe that foundation is the one thing you should not attempt to choose on your own.

HTH,
Nancy

ETA: I don't think foundation has to be expensive to be great. My favorite foundation is Trucco by Sebastian and it's only $22. Unfortunately, it's not sold at stores, only at salons. Hands down, it is the best foundation I've ever tried.

I used to use fifty dollar Chanel foundations until I found mineral makeup. Sometimes I even buy the Loreal one from the drugstore, because that is easier than ordering online.

Thanks Ladies for your input. Nancy, there is not a Sephora in my state, however, there are lots of salons listed at the Sebastian website near me, so I'll check those out.

I've always done just the opposite what the experts say. I have shadows, blush and lipsticks from TArte, smashbox and Clinique.

Forgive me for going off topic here...
Nancy324, you look so pretty in your picture! What a lovely picture.

Thanks Angela. That's very sweet. To keep this on topic: I think I'm wearing Trucco in the pic. :+

I just say:
Your right and I'm wrong.
or
I'm sorry I forgot, and give flowers or candy.
or
You look great in anything.(this one is true!):)
or
I'm really glad you bought that.

Then we make up.....;)

OK. As a makeup "novice" let me try to answer this. A couple of years ago after complaining to my DH that it was time for me to start wearing foundation... he encouraged me to go to the makeup counter which I didn't want to do. I was scared. Don't ask me why maybe cuz I didn't know what I was doing. So I went to Macy's. went to the first counter, Prescriptives and they were not busy but no one came up to me, so I went to Lancome and the lady came up to me helped me by asking me questions. I had never worn foundation because it felt so gross on my skin. She found me a light one with coverage and the right color after several tries. She was great. Anyway, I think it is good if you need help with what you want and don't know much about foundations, which I didn't. However wtih eyeshawdows and lipsticks I don't think it matters. My number one tip is never buy unless you get a free gift!! LOL. I have never bought mascara. HTH

I say yes. The more expensive brands leave a more sheer finish. Skimp on eye pencils and lip stick. Spend on foundation and powder.

I would just like to add that I just received my everyday minerals samples and I am impressed with how generous they are! I do like the product but it does not cover all my sun damage as well as my Estee Lauder double wear.

I would like to suggest also checking out makeupalley.com as they have a ton of reviews. But foundation is a real individual thing I have found out. Marnie:)

It is better to pay more for foundation and concealer than anything else. These are the building blocks for everything else on your face.

Bobbi Brown is a makeup artist. Make up artists lines are usually better than say Estee Lauder, Clinique or Lancome. She is best known for her natural look. She is not known for the extravagant look.

If you take a trip to Neiman Marcus or Bloomingdales take a look not just at Bobbi Brown's line but also Trish McEvoy and Laura Mercier. Have a professional tell you which color is best for you. It really makes a difference.

The blush samples will last FOREVER. I became ultra happy with the coverage after I started using their concealer too. It can take a while to find your best match...luckily I don't have to blend, but I did order 2 or 3 sample kits before I decided on what formula I liked.

I would say that if you spend more money on any one makeup product, that would be foundation and concealer. I LOVE Laura Mercier foundation (I use their powder foundation and secret camoflauge concealor, but I have heard great things about their tinted moisterizer). People compliment me on my skin all the time, but my skin is really not that great, it is just that my foundation covers really well and looks so natural. Bobbi Brown is good too, but I prefer Laura Mercier for foundation and Bobbi Brown and Nars for eye shadows and lipstick.

You should buy drugstore brands for mascara, liner, and lip gloss because they are not really any better. Nars or Bobbi Brown eye shadows or lip sticks have more pigments in them, so they stay on longer and have a richer color. MAC has more reasonably price eye shadows and lipsticks that are better than drugstore.

No, there is no reason to spend $40 on foundation.

I do like Merle Norman's Powder Base - I think it is still under $20.

A little heads-up: When professional makeup artists do my makeup, they use Clinique Continuous Coverage plus moisturizer.

Usually they have these huge makeup cases on wheels. Most of their eyeshadows are derived from MAC pigments.

On a more personal level, I have used the Bare Minerals, but they are messy and expensive.

I would just stick to the drugstore variety.

L'Oreal is the drugstore version of Lancome.

Most department store makeup lines are subsidiaries or divisions of Estee Lauder anyway.
