Magic number game : am I this out of touch?

L Sass

Cathlete
So I was with my high school mock trial team at the state tournament and there can be a lot of down time. They were playing this number game where whatever number you choose comes back to 4, which is the magic number. They asked people to figure it out, and many people had a hard time - the fun was in seeing how long it took them. For example:

say you choose 8
8 is 5, 5 is 4 and 4 is the magic number

6: 6 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4 and 4 is the magic number

7: 7 is 5, 5 is 4 and 4 is the magic number

100: 100 is 10, 10 is 3, 3 is 5, 5 is 4 and 4 is the magic number.

Do ya' get it? It took me a while and then I could have kicked myself thinking "am I this out of touch?" UGH!

Okay I played :7. I've never heard of this before but I'm pretty good at cracking things.

Thanks for the exercise,

Hi Nancy,

It's a brain teaser. Once you crack the code, any number that you choose will lead you to other numbers that will end with the number four.

Have fun :) ,

And it's very fun to have people give you a number and you work the sequence while they try to figure it out. Very simple once you get it, but it'll drive you nuts if you don't. But Connie's clue is it - 4 is the magic number because 4 is 4.

Can someone please give the answer??? My whole family is trying to figure this out and we need help!! I guess we really are out of touch!! ~Tracy~:) :)

I tried to crack it last night but figured it was too late for lateral thinking. I tried to crack it this morning but figure it's too early for lateral thinking:+

I'll keep thinking and sipping my coffee, perhaps when the caffeine kicks in the light bulbs will start flashing and I'll get a clue......perhaps...:)

Sadly I'll probably end up waiting for my Mathmagician DD to get up and shed some light on this puzzling puzzle.

Take Care
Laurie:)

Hey Laurie here's another clue - you don't need your mathematician DD to help. Now if she were and English major or an elementary school teacher on the other hand - that would be very helpful.
