Low Energy

I have all of Cathe's tapes and I absolutely LOVE them. My problem is that I can rarely do more than 35 minutes of cardio without pooping out, despite using low impact modifications. I have been excercising for years and have used Cathe's tapes for about 4 years. I have a stressful/ tiring job (elementary school teacher) and I have low blood sugar which leaves me feeling pretty low energy most days. I get enough sleep and drink enough water. I worry that I won't be able to burn enough calories. I do cardio about 4-6 times a week and one muscle group a day usually 5 times a week. Do some people just have less energy than others? Thanks for any imput!

What time of day do you exercise? You may want to try mornings. I also began to take Chromium Picolinate in the morning....400 mcg. Also, eat mini-meals and DO NOT let yourself get hungfry! I have always had low energy, and these tricks have helped me.

What about iron? Low iron can poop you out big time! When was your last physical? May be time to get checked!

Hi everyone, thanks for the responses! My mother takes medication for her thyroid, and I have wondered about the possibility of low iron. I'll ask my doctor about those things at my next checkup. I knew I would get good suggestions!
Lauren :)

Thanks Honeybunch, what exactly is Chromium Picolinate? I've never heard of that. I don't maintain my blood sugar very well during the day, I do get really hungry and shaky before I eat lunch, then I eat a lot to try and get my blood sugar up for my evening workout. I am going to start packing little snacks to eat throughout the day. Thank you for the tips!

Hi Lauren,

I have the exact same problem as you. Some days are better and others are worse. I have been to the Dr. several times over the years and all my hormone, thyroid, vitamin levels etc all check out fine. I am wondering if my Dr. is missing something? Maybe some of us just have lower energy levels. I wish I had the answer as to why. It can be frustrating. Hang in there.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-14-02 AT 04:18PM (Est)[p]It's a very inexpensive supplement that is supposed to help with regulating sugar levels. A diabetic co-worker's doctor had her take it, but that's not why I do it. Our church's resident martial arts-nutrition guru told me to take it, and it worked wonders for me.

I also don't eat a lot of carbs at noon....white potatoes would make me crash, so I limit my noon-time carbs to a small whole wheat pita bread.

IMHO: I have a one word answer; Protein. The other day I was dizzy and out of it, couldn't do anything, then I realised that I had only carbs for breakfast. I went up to eat 2 HB eggs, and a tad of steamed brocoli and after a little digesting period, that gave me the energy to do a great w/o.
Hope that helps,
Faythe

Hello,
I am a Physician Assistant and a HUGE Cathe fan as well. I agree, I think you should have your thyroid levels checked. Ask your doctor if he/she could do an TSH on you. It is a simple blood test. Other signs of thyroid problems include: Constipation, dry mouth, fatigue, weight gain despite a good lifestyle, dry skin or hair, confusion, or a feeling of just not feeling right. If it is a problem with your thyroid, being that your thyroid gland is hypoactive, meaning it is underactive, a daily tiny pill is all you need. Take care! Keep me posted on your outcome!!!

Hi again, it makes me feel better to know there are other people out there with the same frustrating problem! Sometimes I almost feel like crying when I am sitting on my step panting and light headed while Cathe and the girls are having so much fun on my TV! I am definitely going to the doctor to get myself checked out. Today I ate every three hours and ate a lot of fiber and protien, not so many carbs, and I did the entire Cardio Kicks tape all the way through, hoorah! Thanks again for all the advice, Cathe fans are the best!

RE: You are what you eat

Hey Lauren. There are literally hundreds of reasons for low energy, and you have some great suggestions already. I would like to add that if you find your thyroid is fine and the doctors can't figure out why you are low-e, consider a nutritionist or holistic doctor. I never thought food reactions were real until I went through testing and detox and started eating right for my body. I used to fall asleep in school, had to nap during lunch at work, etc. all my life. I was lucky, in my late 20s found an allergist who has a nutritionist on staff. Now I know, if I eat one of my trigger foods, I will be unbearably tired in about an hour. :-tired It's amazing how much what we eat affects us. What is "healthy" for one is not for another. It might help you to find a better form of fuel for your workouts that works with your chemistry. Just something to think about. Best of luck, keep chuggin'! :-jumpy

PS. Check out the book False Fat Diet by Dr. Haas. It's a great desk reference for food sensitivity, gives suggested diets for different ailments, and lists what supplements are suggested for each ailment. It also explains in simple terms how food sensitivies work. I found this book very comforting and enlightening.
