Who...ME?!?!? ;)

Hmmm, as i am the original poster.. i never said that P90x was low on cardio. Just that it is the most boring cardio to me and that i find doing cardio with Cathe way more fun... and a circut thrown in once in a while.

P90X, Cathe and that TurboJam Muchacha

Hey Everyone,

I figured I could add my 2 cents worth! I own practically all of Cathe's DVD's and bought the P90X series and the older version the Power 90, along with that Turbo Jam workout. Here is my opinion.

As former competitve bodybuilder, I really do like Cathe's Gym Style Series. These workouts are similiar to the way you would workout at the gym, in the way they group bodyparts together, and are tough if you use enough weight. Plus along with Cathe's incredible physique, you have the rest of the gals for inspiration. I particularly admire Jai, whatta set of abs that woman has!

In short, love all of her DVD's, except the Imax ones with all the fancy stepwork, I am horrible at it and wind up not getting a good workout because I am too busy trying to keep up with all the footwork.

The first series with Tony was the Power 90, and I was like, "who in the world is this guy?" Whatta dork! These workouts are okay, but Cathe is better by far. And that Turbo Jam chick? If you think Tony is annoying, get a load of this chick! I am sure she is great gal, but comes across clumsy, and she looks strange working out, not to mention her whole cheerleader thing, which I cannot stand. No offense to all you bubbly types, but when you are trying to workout, I just cannot stand too much cheeriness... smiles, grunts and a few cuss words yes, over the top chirpiness...no.

Plus she wears a skirt in one of her workouts....oh dear....

P90X has bodybuilder type workouts, meaning serious stuff here, as well. The pullups, pushups seem in excess sometimes, but that is good, it shocks your body into doing something different. Cardio X sucks pretty much, my heartrate never gets up there at all, KenpoX is cool, easy on my bum hip, and a good workout cardio wise, not as hard as Cathe's cardio workouts, but there are days when you want to do something a little easier, and Kenpo is it for me! Hate the yoga, love the stretch, even though it is sooo long.Core Synergestics is a complete waste of time to me, and I love the Plyometrics, you just have to make sure to do it only once or twice a week when you are feeling extra energy, it is tough.

I have not tried the X diet,I hate being told what to eat, I kinda have that down after my bodybuilding days anyway.

As far as Tony, I spent the first few times I did a workout, trying to figure out if he was gay or not and which one his partner was (I mean that in a very nice way, so do not get me wrong!) hey, it helped get me past the repetitiveness of the weight workouts.

It does bug me how he makes a big deal over the "fabulous Drea", who flies thru the air with the greatest of ease" who cares...what about the guy with only one leg that does the PlyoX? He is awesome...and Vanessa bugs me too, especially in the Kenpo video, but I do think it is funny when he starts bugging everyone while they are trying to do another rep, either you like him or you don't, and I can tell alot of the people in the video's get really annoyed by him!

I think he is kinda goofy, and can say some funny stuff, plus he is in great shape. But I get sick of him plugging that silly drink, bars, and all the "soups" which are obviously part of the X diet plan. So there, I said my piece. All in all, I use both Tony and Cathe's workouts and find the variety to be alot of fun and very effective! And you know what they say about opinions, they are like......everybody has one!

Gotta little time on your hands during those workouts?

Brigitterenee - Ooops, my apologies. I stand corrected. It was Carolyn (pixie9) who said:

"I also think that so many people are getting results from it because I suspect they've never done a real strength training rotation, lifting VERY heavy and dropping the cardio, over a 90 day period."

Wow, I think this thread is going to go on forever. :p

Well if ya wanted it to die then ya shouldn't have posted again!;) :p :p :7

hahaha. I'm pushing it back up. ahem. I really need to get my hands on P90x. Sounds like something I would enjoy.

*waits for P90x to drop on head*

I agree with Suz. I love P90X and I love Tony too. I also love Cathe as well. Well I just love everyone! ;-) Almost. The music doesn't bother me either in the P90X workouts.

I love both Cathe and P90X.

There are things I love about both and things that get on my nerves about both. No big deal -- I get great results from them. I have done strength rotations before, but for some reason I am getting awesome results from P90X like never before -- especially in my core. I think that the Ab Ripper X is awesome, you also use your core a lot with all of the push-ups.

I like that there are men in Tony's workout, sometimes when doing Cathe's workouts (excluding Bootcamp) it seems like only a girl thing. It would definitely stope my husband from doing Cathe workouts.

I never noticed Tony's orange tan or inky black hair, howver I have noticed the very dark tan on Cathe and her crew many times. I also like the fact that Tony stops and shows us proper form. What in the heck do I care if he finishes every rep - it is my workout. I would much rather have a form pointer.

I don't care for the music in all of the P90X DVDs, so I turn it off and play my own -- an option that Cathe doesn't give and probably wouldn't work on the choreographed cardio workouts.

I like the fact that in P90X they are all dressed like normal people working out, not matching cutsie outfits. The girls in Cathe DVDs definitely appear more buff -- sometimes I cannot believe how much more buff. Jai is an inspiration!

Just my opinions since we all seem to be sharing them. I like them both for different reasons and plan to use both in the future.

I love P90X and the more I use it (I'm into my 3rd week of my first rotation), the more I LOVE it. I'm already getting results as people are asking me (for the first time, mind you) "do you workout"? I haven't lost any weight but look and feel "different". I can't explain it...........

I love Cathe too! She got me out of the gym (which I despised) and into my home for which I am so greatful!!! She kept me in decent shape for the last few years and I'll definitely go back to her Gym Styles and Pyramid workouts.

ETA - I loved helping keeping this thread alive. I get a kick out of different opinions of workouts!

Well, I don't mind people expressing pro or con opinions about WORKOUTS, but why does it have to get personal about the instructor? Tony is not Cathe and Cathe is not Tony, and that is a GOOD thing - it's variety that makes workouts fun and interesting. I love that Cathe does the whole workout. But I also love that Tony takes the time to give form pointers - those are really helpful for me.

And I do think comments about sexual orientation really cross the line.

Now, I am done with this thread and off to Plyo with Tony. Maybe I'll go get a spray tan in a show of solidarity. :)

Another point I'd like to make is that P90X is a strength training/muscle building program. In that sense, it is a good program. I like the idea of a 90 day program that has specific goals. I also like how they let you know how much time each section has. That part is truly genius. That said, muscle building programs are not typically of interest to women. I know that many women on this forum (and this thread), love muscle building stuff, but they are probably the exception to the rule. They get results from lifting heavy and dropping the cardio (I stand by that statement.. although you can deter from the classic rotation- it is still less cardio than many women would do).
They get results from the concepts behind the program. In other words, I could easily plan a muscle building program for myself with not a lot of thought and execute it pretty easily. Personally I am not motivated by P90X, so that's how I would do it if that were my goal. I would not, however spend an hour making up a step/cardio routine. I count on Cathe to do that for me so I appreciate her greatly for that. I also like her weight routines because they are so straight forward, but again, it probably comes down to how I prefer her personality. Also, muscle building is not a goal of mine. I don't want to build a lot of muscle or drop body fat so that program is not for me. I'm happy with my occasional strength training, my endurance training, and my cardio for now....so Cathe it is!

Carolyn

Carolyn, you bring up perhaps the unique difference between Cathe and P90X and that is the fact that P90X is a periodization program specifically formulated for a 90 day period of time. While Cathe has designed individual workouts that can be designed to create "rotations", P90X is a theoretical strength building program.

Long live this thread!

X

X (your name is rather fitting to this thread), you also bring up a good point. I wonder if anyone has compiled a periodization program using Cathe workouts? I always thought of Cathe's rotations as "mini periodization" programs myself so I suspect it wouldn't be that hard to lengthen a rotation.

Yes, this thread shall NOT die!!

One thing I have always wondered about Cathe is -- does she follow her own rotations? I know that she teaches some classes, but I have never seen anyone that does majority step aerobics and endurance weight training that looks like her. She looks awesome -- she looks more like a bodybuilder type though than aerobics / endurance lifting. Any thoughts? I apologize that it is a little off of subject.

Monica

Monica-
I seem to recall that Cathe said she teaches 3-4 classes and strenth trains the rest of days... dont know how long ago that was.... Please correct me if I'm in error !!

yep... that's what i read, too... she didn't get that body from her published workouts! lol!

I do wonder the same thing.... We should ask her in the Ask cathe's forum......

Oh for goodness sake I've been so busy that I forgot to check back here and this thread ended up on PAGE 2!

I actually did have something important to say relating to this thread. The only BAD thing about not doing as much cardio is that if someone were to continue to eat say, Ho Ho's, then that person should probably add in additional cardio to see better results. I'm just saying. ;)

And now you know why I have changed/added to the cardio in the rotation!:p
