Lifting like girls

I, again, am moving w/0's up a day due to DW having her second knee replaced. The surgery is Friday, but we will go up Wed. Where I am staying has at least some dumbbells so I I can get everything in but arms and I can figure something out for them. I had a really good chest day today after yesterdays dead debacle! I worked up in triples thru 185, a double at 205 and a shorter single at 215. Then I dropped to 200 and did a good triple, 185x5x4, 165 2x8, 135x12. I used 145 for incline and did 5 sets x8x7x6x5x4 and finished with pushups x25 x20 x15 and these were all near failure! I found out that I must be tri dominant on bench. I used to try to be wide, but I moved my hands in closer, just barely outside shoulders and the weights just felt lighter!! I should have realized this because the same happened on ohp's. That is why the ez curl bar felt better because I used a narrower grip. When I narrowed my grip in on the oly bar, it was fine...slow learner! Male Commando out...you Ladies ROCK!!!

Lib, those tabata are hard! If you can keep on doing one every so often, you'll see your cardio capacity skyrocket.
You asked about supercuts- it's the metabolic workout from XTrain. And it's great fun. No dread. Keeps on moving.

Tom, I've never played around with grip width. Well no more than altering it an inch or two. I'm going to try that out. Anyway, well done on the chest day-perhaps you just needed a day off? Your dw's knee replacement - I'm assuming the first one went well, and that this one should go smoothly? I hope so. My dh is having knee surgery in a few weeks. He's torn his cruciate ligament for the 3rd time! He's having keyhole, but it's the last time they'll do a mend. Next time it's replacement.

Anyway...final month of HTS, and I'm worried. Today the supersets (4 X each) were:
Bird dog neuro pulse (weird) + heavy deadlift (3 reps)
Side plank rotations (8) + skater squats(8)
Incline DB chest press (15) + bear squats (30)
Preacher curls (15) + skull crushers (12)

All this was after a warmup which included shoulder tap push ups and 100(!) KB swings.

It took an hour and 50, but much of that was watching clips to see exactly what a bird dog neuro pulse was. Also, set up takes a while when it's a new routine.

I also did a ROMWOD (https://romwod.com/) only 20 mins. It felt good, but it was nothing earth shattering. I think Sunday's tend to be easy.

Roz- I'm going to try a run through the physique templates before I commit to the exercises. I thought I could just do 1 light set of each workout as my deload from HTS. I'll be paying very close attention to your exercise selection advice! I like that they purposely get you to overreach before deload. I'm hearing great things about it!
My cut, however, is not the most impressive! The scale has barely moved- although I think I look more cut. I'm going to give it a couple more days, and if there's no change, I'll move down a tab (gulp). I'm currently on the cut 1 tab. A lot of this could be water- I could barely squeeze my quads into my jeans yesterday- they felt very 'full'. Oh well, I can only see what happens. A little self-experimenting!

And to those that said well done on my front squat.... I should confess that it made me pee a little! Good job I work out at home. TMI, I know, but I thought it was funny. The unglamorous side of lifting......

Hope the weekend has treated you all well xx

Hi friends! Happy Sunday to you all!

Tom, I'm feeling jealous of your strong triceps. Feel no shame for those deads, tomorrow is another day. You did great with the chest work today. Your drop sets on those pushups sounded evil, like something Cathe would put into a Meso 1 chest workout! Best wishes for your wife's surgery this week. What Justine said, hopefully since this will be the other knee it means her first replacement was helpful. I hope she's given you a LONG honey-do list for when she's recovering. ;) It's good for a Commando husband to be on his toes.

Justine, snow, wth? I thought you Brits talked about the weather because it was the polite thing to do (unlike religion and politics). Turns out it is just truly an interesting topic!!! ROMWOD sounds interesting. Can you describe the workouts? Is it like dynamic stretching? I'm curious! Good work today! Bird dog neuro pulse does sound weird. I will have to look that one up.

Lib, YES! Those tabatas are no joke! Cathe doesn't hold back. Good work. I think you'll be 100% ready for RWH after you finish the rotation you're working on. Also remember that you never need to match Cathe's weights and you can always take the breaks you need. That rule applies for RWH, XTrain, ICE, etc.

Roz!!! (((HUGS))) to your sweetie. I'm glad she's doing better. There is something going around that's nasty and it lingers. Sorry your little gal caught the bug. It doesn't sound like you did, so that's good! Yep, lots of outdoor bike riding and general mayhem on the backyard concrete! It's been great except that my body has decided to develop the worst allergies I've ever had. Ever. It's like sinus pressure and a migraine mated to have a baby from hell. It sounds like my allergy baby is the little sister of your Week 4 hell baby! Oy! I bet the deload week will feel oh.so.good. Have you had any time to add yoga into your routine? Hope you're well, we miss you but know you're busy. (((HUGS)))

Karen, hi! Feeling better?

Yesterday I did ICE Chiseled UB and LB Blast Live (1/21/2016). I love this one! Today is rest and tomorrow starts STS Meso 1 Week 3.

See you all later! Have a good night.

Justine, sorry to hear about hubby's knee issues, I hope his surgery goes well! My wife said that her knee felt better immediately after surgery than before surgery last time, so hopefully will go smooth! The surgeon is my son's best friend and they did med school and residency together. He went back to Mayo as a consultant, and we know he will take good care of her! Your w/o sounds intense and hits lotsa muscle groups! I'm to ADD, lucky to focus on one at a time! Today was lat day and I started with lat pulldowns 120# 3x10 and 2x8. Next I did one set of bent over barbell rows 205# x5 , 1 sets of deads 205# x 10, and 3 x 10 dumbbell rows 85s. I did 1 set x 5 chin-ups and it was tolerable...not pushing these just yet! I finished with 1x20 cable crunches, upping the weight 10#. I know it's "ugh Monday", but we can do this! Have a great week friends!

Tom was working out this morning while I was continuing to hit snooze..... Great workout Tom!

Lisa, that workout sounds intense!

I had a hard time with metabolic total body today. It was tough. But a great one, sweat pouring off.

I love Mondays (Sorry, Tom), I don't have classes, so it gives me time to clean and study. :) well, Until 4.

Have a great day all!

Hi all!
Well those skull crushers yesterday have made it tricky to brush my hair today!
Today's HTS (lib- it's high tensile strength, a 6 month strength programme by Dean Somerset):

Hard stomps (!!!!?????) 5 each side + elevator front squats (7)
Military press (5) + band pull aparts (30!)
Seated cable row (10) + shoulder drop push up (6each)
High step ups (8each) + 360lateral raises (12)

The first superset was repeated 4x, but the remainder only 3x- so it felt like a lighter day than normal. I had expected the elevator squats to be hard (I was planning the express elevator straight from ground floor to the penthouse, no stopping), but they were OK. It was probably my pathetically light weight that I tried them with (37kg). At least I left myself room to improve. The surprise was band pull aparts. Delts on fi-ya.
I'd been wondering why there is only 1 deadlift day per week (3 squat days)- but then I had to do the 100 KB swings, and I realised that doing that 4 X per week will be plenty of glute work!

Tom, your wife sounds as though she'll have the best of care. Wonderful. I wish her a speedy and complete recovery, and I totally agree with Lisa that you'll have to spoil her! I hope she milks it as long as poss (glad my dh won't see this!)

Lisa, we Brits love discussing the weather. But we also love talking about politics, just not serious stuff - we're obsessed with Donald Trump. The one thing we never, ever, ever discuss, however, is money. We'd rather confess our deepest, darkest secrets than lower ourselves to revealing our thoughts on money - it's considered dirty! How weird are we?

Lib, I'm sure you did well on the metabolic workout. Sometimes these things can just seem like a drag.

Hi Roz and Karen.

Justine, sorry I forgot to also mention that I hope your DH's knee surgery goes well. Why must the knees get so wobbly and wonky as we get on in years? Yeah, I think you'll get more than enough glute work with your day of deads, 3x squats, and those KB swings. I love how band work surprises the muscles. I remember a while back you were wanting to develop strength in your posterior chain. Are you happy with how HTS has worked that muscle grouping? LOL on Donald Trump and the no-money-talk rule. Americans are weird about money too, at least I think so. Not a lot of open talk about it, at least not enough in my opinion. But who cares what I think? ;)

Tom, great work work work today! Mondays are tough...well, except for Lib I guess, ha! All those chins and rows are a great way to start your week.

Lib, ICE may say "intermediate" but I don't think that's easy! Cathe's "intermediate" is most people's "advanced," IMO. You got through it, though! Metabolic workouts are tough!

Today I did STS Disc 9 Legs. I'm gonna need a good long stretch or foam roll session tonight. Yowza!

Hi to Karen and Roz. Great Monday to you all!

Hey everybody. Haven't been to work, yet. Thanks for all the good vibes, virtual chicken soup, and homemade bread. Went to the Dr. this morning. Wish it was Doc McDreamy, but no such luck. Was told I have viral pneumonia. I was wondering why I couldn't shake this. Woke up this morning, having a hard time breathing. My husband insisted we go to the medical center emergency. That was not going to happen, I was in my bathrobe. Called the Dr. and they were kind to get me in this morning. So here I am, watching more Grey's Anatomy. I'm hating this, I need to lift something. I will be lifting vicariously, through all of you. Keep up the good work. Take care!
P.S. I love your confession, Justine!! LOL, can't say I've never done that!

Uggghhh, Karen, viral pneumonia?! Glad your husband got you into the dr's. But that's just awful. :( You rest and take good care and lift vicariously, you'll be back in action in no time. Sending you big hugs.

Lib, what Lisa said -- ICE is not GENERALLY intermediate, it's CATHE intermediate! You're doing great, keep challenging yourself as you do and you'll keep making great progress! :D

Justine, cut 2? Ugh. I'd just be sad. But... I'm also thinking of the A templates cut 2 which would just make me... whither. If you're seeing body comp changes on cut 1, that's also great! Scale schmale. :) Keep us posted -- we'll cheer you on whatever you decide!

Lisa, woman, STS legs still scare me. I'll have to revisit at some point but... you're brave! :) Sorry to hear about those awful allergies, ugh. They're the pits. Thanks for the well wishes for my daughter. She's definitely on the up-and-up. Enjoy your backyard paradise! :)

Tom, best wishes to your wife for this Friday. Sounds like you two take good care of each other! :) Great job on those workouts, as ALWAYS!

OK so... today I finished week 4 of meso 1! Next week (i.e., starting Wednesday after tomorrow -- rest day) is deload, and I gotta say I'm all too ready for it. Meso 2 is called 'elevated volume' -- WTH?! I'm scared. In a good way. :)

Justine, eager to hear your continued thoughts on ROMWOD. I hear good things.
Take care, all.
Roz

Karen, I'm really sorry to hear about the viral pneumonia, nothing to take lightly! Please take GOOD care of yourself, rest, and we all eagerly await your comeback!!!

Popping in to add my well wishes to you, Karen. Thank you for listening to your wise DH and getting yourself to the doctor because, geez, nothing short of viral pneumonia could take you down this long. You go big or you go home even with your illnesses, huh woman? ;) Please take care, rest, watch Doc McDreamy and doesn't Doc McSteamy come along somewhere too? Gilmore Girls is another good one to binge watch in case you run out of Grey's. (((HUGS)))

Good Morning Lifters! Leg day, and again the mental battle...but gray matter convinced striated tissue to proceed!! ON bench squats I started at 115 and did triples in 20# increments to 215# then a triple at 225# dropped to 195 x6 and 175 x6. Next 3x8 dumbbell reverse lunges with 45s, 1x8 straight leg staggard deads for each leg (45s) and barbell calf raises 175#x30x25x20. Glad gray won!!! Roz. are you doing STS?? Or maybe another program has meso's. Go "KILL IT" Ladies...(like I gotta say it)!!!

Karen, oh no!! Big hugs! That stuff is horrible. Hope you recover quickly. Please take care of you though, you're are important.

Thanks all for the kind words about MTB!! If I compare it to last time I did it, I did much better :). I am starting to think there no day to day comparison, but each workout to previous s time done. That's less distressing :)

Lisa and Roz, STS legs scare me, but WORK!! I love them (possibly love/hate?)

Great workout, Tom!

Today was week one day 4 of ICE. I Was dressed and gathering up stuff to workout, my youngest stops and says, "Wow, Mom you have abs!" Yay!! For someone else to see, especially my preteen son- that means there is a difference!

Did To the Mat. I don't know why I was thinking it would be a light day.....Cathe doesn't do light! Pretty sure I won't be walking next few days!

I have a ticked cat. He got into a fight with another cat (according to vet) and has a puncture wound on the bottom of his paw. So no outside for him. :(

Lib, you said it! Cathe does not do light! Good luck with those leg DOMS! Sorry about your cat, hope he feels better. YOU should be feeling good about those compliments, especially from a preteen kiddo. Great!

Tom, good thing you got both big brains and big brawn! Sometimes our big brains needs to kick us in the rear so we can keep the brawn. Leg day is always a big deal. High fives.

Justine, of course we all understand the lunacy that drives us to work out body parts already suffering from DOMS. Isn't that the very definition of a Commando? Did you enjoy the workout, besides the triceps pain?

Karen, please continue to heal up girl!

Roz, hi!

I did STS Disc 7 Chest, Shoulders, Biceps. Worst. Push-up. Day. Ever. This is always a love/hate. Only one more disc of hellacious Meso 1 push-ups! I think I might try to power through Meso 2 after taking an active recovery week. Not sure yet. Meso 3 is definitely NOT in the cards. Not gonna do it, don't like it!

Sometimes good things happen when least expected! One of my goals was to strictpress 2 plates and I got it today! It was a "kinda grindy", but I don't freakin care, I will take it!! While I suck as a strict pressor, I am better than I used to be, and I guess that is what we are all doing...trying to improve ourselves!! After the 135, I did a double at 125, a triple at 115 and at 105, x6x4x4x2 and finished with 85 x10. I used 25s on side laterals, x10 x10 x15(near fail), and rear delt flys, 35s, x10 x10 x15 (near fail), I finished with barbell shrugs 205,3 x20. Ya'll are inflicting metal beatdowns!! Love reading about them..keep up the great work!
