Lifting like girls

Good Morning Commando Sisters! Leg day for me, and a good one for a change. For squats I did all sets as bench squats. It is comforting to know I wont lose it going deep, so I "loaded up". I have only done these a few times and the most I used was 175#, but today I really pushed it and got to a double at 225#!! I couldn't believe it! I think it took the fear factor out of going parallel, or at least very close to it; and I felt more comfortable going for it! These will probably become my new "go to's" for squats. I did 10 sets of these total, finishing at 175x8. Next were dumbbell reverse lunges, 45's 3x8, barbell calf raises 175# x30 x25 x20. 1 set unweighted donkey press x25 and finished with Brett's staggard deadlift, 45's x 8 each leg...weird! Off to vote and work. Have a terrific Tuesday all!

225# Tom, awesome. Totally understand about the confidence thing. I think that may be holding back my bench (that, or lack of strength :p)
But, pray tell, sir, what is this new-fangled deadlift of which you speak?

Today was posterior chain stuff for me. Deadlifts- no # increase on last week, but they felt a little prettier. Two bench rows - feet on one bench, elbow on another in plank, then row- ow. Obliques. There was also some KB snatches, and pull ups. I went back a step on the pull ups and used a band, but widened my grip considerably. I don't know why, but I just felt like it!!!! With all the accessory moves, it was another long workout. But at least I got to eat all the carbs!

Lib, looking forward to hearing about ice.

Roz, how's the physique template going. I hear it's doms-inducing.

Karen- you going to start RP?

Lisa, any Cathe inspiration for me?

Xx to all

Hi Commando friends! I've been busy of late, hence the silence on my end. I will probably also be more sporadic in my checking-in for the next couple of weeks. Lots going on right now!

Tom, shouting from the rooftops that you got to use that EZ Curl bar for your curls! Like Justine said, take it easy and don't go too heavy too fast! I did like your EZ Curl rap. I would nominate you for a Grammy, or maybe a Tony? It sounded cool like the stuff from Hamilton (the musical that's on Broadway right now). LOL on the boob job! I was going to ask you how you got sufficient range of motion since you don't have boobs to help you out! Geez, what would your DW think of our group here? We have no manners! :)

Roz, sounds like RP is treating you right! Good work and the low 140s is certainly still a slender weight for your height, and you must be quite tight in your physique given all your crazy muscles! Hope your busy schedule is still fun and manageable!

Karen, oh yes, workout ADHD. I can't even imagine how you have stuck with this program so long, same with Justine on the HTS. How's your home renovation going? I 100% agree, don't like Meso 3 UB. I LOVE the Plyo legs but the UB is just way too slow and I can't really get the full effect without a spotter, and unfortunately real life doesn't allow for my DH to stay home and be my spotter! ;) I love Dallas, too. Never lived there but have visited multiple times. The Cathe Lives are still listed in chronological order, with the newest one at the top. There's a new search feature, which is handy. I think you'd really like Metabolic Mashup (3/3/16) and Athletic Training Live (2/11/16).

Justine, you're doing great too! Is there anyone here who doesn't love/hate the squats? You have the most right to complain since HTS has you doing squats all the day long!

Lib, what Justine said--X10 is hard. Lots of compound and leg-intensive moves. Much more than your run of the mill jumping jacks. Whatever rotation you choose, you'll be good. Consistency is really the biggest thing. You're so busy, you are amazing for what you're able to accomplish. Enjoy Dallas and I hope you feel better soon. I loathe it when sick people cough without covering up the nose/mouth. I also agree with Karen, Meso 3 (with the exception of Plyo Legs) has a MAJOR dread factor. Don't like the UB work.

I do, however, love STS so I decided to dabble in Meso 1 this week. Monday was Disc 3 Legs and today was Disc 1 Chest, Shoulders, Biceps. Will those push-ups ever get easier? I had to go to my knees a couple times. So humbling!

Delt Domination in the dungeon! While I did not dominate, I punished the underachievers!! As usual, I started with strict press and worked up to an attempt at 130#...didn't get it done, so let the punishment begin! I dropped to 115# and did 2 doubles, dropped 10# and did 3 sets,4x4x3, dropped another 10# and did 4 sets 6x5x5x5, dropped another 10# and did 5 sets x6. I followed with 3x10 side laterals with 25's, 3x12 for rear delt flys with 35's and finished with 2x30 dumbbell shrugs using 85's. I finished the w/o with cable crunches 1 x40 ( this is the longest rep set I have done on this one). Justine, what I called staggard deads was a deadlift with one foot behind the other, isolating the front leg (especially hammies and glutes) and used it as an alternative to 1 leg deads which are so dependent on balance (don't want to fall on my face!!) I hope those wide grip pullups get you those 'lat doms"!! I have been going really wide on my pulldowns too, with the same hope! I actually did 1 set x 6 neutral grip pullups at work yesterday, can't say it was my brightest move, but REALLY getting tired of waiting! Lisa. I love our "manners"....keeps us lighthearted!! Have a great day Ladies of Iron!!

Hi everyone!
Great job to all. Killin' it, as always!

Justine, still loving the physique templates. I dread leg days, but hey. Oh, and I used my 'hard day' template for the first time today. Loving that, too! :) Do you have the 'A' templates or the 'B' templates (do they say F_A_C or F_B_C)?

Lisa, yeah, it's the scale weird? I mean, yes, I'm quite lean at 141ish, DEFINITELY leaner than before I started massing (I started around 141, actually). Plus I'm still taking creatine, which accounts for some added weight (water) in the muscles. Plus high volume training and fairly high carbs. But what I mean is... I see photos of women my height who weigh 15 lbs more than I and who are totally shredded and I think... what am I, some kinda weakling? ;)

Y'all have me huffing and puffing just reading about your workouts. Training 6x/week, I hardly do cardio these days, but I LOVE my boxing warmups!! :D Actually, what do I mean 'hardly any cardio'... if 16 sets of 10-20 squats and deads isn't cardio, I just don't know what is. :p
Oh yeah, X10 is... well, I'm getting tired just thinking about it. Hats off to you, Lib!

Tom and Karen, putting in the hard work! Love reading about it.
Take care, all!
Roz

Roz, mine are 'B' templates. Is that the weight range? I figured the f=female, and c=cut. From what I've read the templates change at 140#....I'm over that (about 144 when I ordered the templates). I get 3oz protein.....glad I'm not on the 2oz templates! What have you got? I can't imagine what workout constitutes hard....I've never moved off moderate yet, and am frequently on light.

Tom, still no Lat doms for me. I keep trying though! Great drop set of presses- that's some weight you shifted. And I'll remember those deads for my wobbly days! Watch that elbow with the pull ups...

Lib, I've heard the metabolic ice dvd is tougher than the rest. Well done - metabolic stuff is hard work.

I failed at bench presses again today. I've got to get my technique sorted. It's pathetic. Heavy hip thrusts were better, but uncomfortable! Step ups to 24" - felt downright dangerous, and then landmine rotations...I'm going to have awesome obliques (once they're uncovered).

Great lifting everyone!

Thanks, Justine, that makes me feel a lot better!

Tom, I am always so impressed by your workouts!

Roz, missed you!
I think I did ok on my test. I am hoping fo some time in the pool in Dallas, but not holding my breath. Have no idea what I am fighting, but coughing a lot......it hurts. Got NyQuil, and getting pepto tomorrow. Hoping to keep improving. If this gets worse, I can't go to Dallas........UGH!!!!

Lib, sending major healing vibes your way! Fingers crossed, prayers to heaven, etc that you feel better ASAP. (((HUGS)))

Lib, what Lisa said! HUGS!

Justine, I got the A templates for cutting (I was 141 at the time, so I think they figured I'd soon be below the 140# cutoff). I later bought the B templates for massing (138 at the time, same logic reversed). But 'base' is the same for A cutting and A massing (or B cutting and massing). A base vs B base = a world of difference. Stick with B! In retrospect, no wonder I lost so fast I thought bodyparts were falling off. Next cut, I'll adjust the B templates for cutting.

What I've heard for light vs. moderate vs. hard is, 10 working sets or less = light, 10-20 = moderate, 20+ = hard. Don't count abs towards working sets. I also don't count calves. So when I did 'hard' yesterday, I had 25 working sets (upper body, but plenty of benching, rowing, pullups, etc.). However, you use common sense, of course. If you have 21 sets but you're doing heavy triples up to heavy singles, that's not 'hard'. Volume is the primary variable. High rep squats and deads will obviously take more out of you than a high rep 'arm day'.

Today was 'moderate', but honestly, harder than yesterday's 'hard'. Because, squats and deads. To give an idea of the torture:
High bar squats 4 sets to 2 shy of failure 155# (I hit 10-15 reps each)
Front squats for 4 sets 2 shy of failure 115#, about 10 reps per set
Stiff legged deads for 4 sets 2 shy of failure 185#, about 10/set
Hip thrusts for 4 sets 2 shy of failure 230#, about 10/set
Stair calves 90# DB for 5x15. The rx for sets/failure is the same here, but I just don't have the equipment to hit my calves that hard (without my hand falling off... holding a 90# DB is a PITA after high rep RDLs...).

So, that's a taste of what I've been doing. I think I'll probably do a 'mini-mass', just to reap the benefits of all the evil high rep work. Because, quads.

OK, gotta run -- that's my training dump for the day! :)
High fives and hugs all around!
Roz

Great work Roz! What is the name of that program? Sounds brutal! I know it is WAY too scientific for me, but I would like to look it up. I got in an arm day today, really low weight but tons of reps. Started with kinda of a superset hybrid, doing a tri set of ez curl bar skullcrushers/close grip bench/ez bar curl. I started with just the bar for a "feel it out" set and it was ok, I went to 45# for 3x10 each, 55# 3x10 each, and 65# 3x10. Next was a superset of tri pushdowns/dumbbell curls(started with hammer for the first 2 sets, then conventional for the last 2) I only used 25's for the curls and did 4x10. Next a superset of crossbody tri's/conc curls, doing 4x8 with 30's. The elbows held up great! Hoping I will be able to "load it up" SOON! I finished arms with iso flexes 1x50/close pushups 2x25. For a ab finisher I did 2 sets of incline sit ups x30 x20, 2 sets of side planks 45 sec each, and 1 set of cable crunches x 25. I ended up doing about 42 sets for arms, but light poundage. Still, it felt GREAT to do more than I have been able to! Tomorrow I will leave the house about 5AM to get to the meeting. There is some kind of weight room there, but I started the week early so I could finish off my week here. If it is a good facility, I will try to get "something" in! Ladies, "bust things up!!! Have a great weekend!

Justine, whoa, a 24" step is like a step with 9 risers underneath it, right? That would freak me out, I don't think I could do it. Sorry you're so frustrated with the bench. :( Get anything in today, or was it a rest day?

Lib, how are you feeling?

Tom, way to work it! Glad your elbows are still cooperating. Fingers crossed your hotel has a weight room fit for a Commando.

Roz, whoa woman! Whatever your weight on the scale, you are crushing the weights in your weight room! Are quads your current aesthetic goal? Those workouts look so tough and I bet there's a major cardio factor.

Karen, hey!

Yesterday was Hard Strikes Low Impact Boxing Live (maybe June 2014?). Today was STS Disc 2, Back and Triceps. Every time I do these STS Back & Tri workouts I think "there's no way this is REALLY 56 minutes." And then, yes, yes it is! I suck at pull-ups and chins, y'all.

Hi everyone. Quick check in. The 9.5 hour bus ride to Dallas was brutal. The ac cut out about half way through the trip. I heard the word "like" from 6 girls probably more than a billion times, but a couple of grad students brought beer. LOL!!

I feel better, but still coughing a lot. I don't have to present until Saturday afternoon.

My legs are cramping from the metabolic workout yesterday, and the 9 + hour mobility limitation. Ouch.
Roz and Justine, sounds intense!! Very coolLisa! Hi Tom

Lib, hope you're feeling much better and good luck on your presentation!!!

Tom, hope you had safe travels to your meeting.

Justine, hey! Karen, hey! Roz, hey!

Today I did my very first Ilaria workout, and I wanted to start slow with Powerstrike 4. I've read this was her "easiest" of the kickboxing workouts. It wasn't easy but it wasn't killer. Just what I wanted. My favorite part was how she focuses so much on form. It's sooooooo easy to get sloppy with kickboxing. Almost every time she called out a form pointer, I felt like she was calling me out for bad behavior. :) I didn't actually buy the DVD. I was looking for some more variety so I subscribed for a month of the streaming service through totalfitnessdvds. OMG I could spend hours browsing through the library. So much fun! I did 2 stretching videos last night just because I could!

I will workout tomorrow, probably a Live metabolic. I'll be back Sunday or Monday to report. Good weekend to you all!!!

Lib, hilarious about the girls on the bus saying 'like' all the time! I feel the same as you about it. So, it's totally, like, literally not awesome, like.

Tom, 42 sets for arms? You're on a serious volume trip! The programme Roz is following (sorry for butting in, Roz), is the Renaissance periodisation female physique templates! I'm starting them in 6 weeks- and Roz is making me nervous! If she thinks they're tough, then I'm dead. RP do other templates, such as hypertrophy etc. They're bring out a male body building one soon. Can't recommend RP enough. (Thank you Roz for leading me to them.)

Lisa, I love ilaria! She's some powerhouse! I like her kickboxing stuff when I just want some SS cardio. With totalfitness streaming and Cathe, I don't know how you ever manage to get anything done... I'd spend 2 hours choosing, and then have no time to workout!

Roz. What can I say? You'll certainly get quads after all that. I've been counting my HTS as moderate, because there's a lot of mobility stuff and accessory work. So I don't count, for example, step ups, or dead bugs, or band work. Still, there's a lot of squatting and deadlifting....Interesting about the weight cut offs for the diet. Over my adult life I've been everything from 130-150lbs, but I'm usually a few # either side of 140. I'm not so sure where I really want to be, but I don't want to drop down to the A templates by the sound of it! I used to be happy sub 140, but I'm presuming (hoping) I have more muscle now, so I might be better a little heavier. Blimey, RP has made me vain!!!!!

Karen, spill the beans- you're workouts always make me feel lazy!

Thursday I needed a quick workout, so I did pyramid hiit. May as well not of bothered, as I just couldn't summon enough energy. No spring in my legs!

Yesterday I did HTS (high rep front squats again, yuk). I then dug the garden for 3 hours, and because I was going out in the evening, I then did rock em sock em. On top of dog walking, I decided I'd earned my meal out! Got to our friends, and the meal they had cooked was meh. So I hardly ate! After all that!!!!! Anyway, the company was good. See, RP has made me obsessed.

Hope the weekend has brought joy, world peace and heavy lifts to all. Xx

Hi everyone!
Just popping online to whine/stall between sets and say hi. :)
Lisa, love that you're playing with new workouts on the streaming service! Can't wait to hear your reviews. :D

Justine, I don't think the volume on the physique templates will be that much of a shock after HTS. I know you have a lot of mobility work but... still.
How are the templates coming? Since RP seems to be a notable shift in your eating, I wouldn't be surprised if you could achieve some body recomposition at maintenance. Best of both worlds!!
A word of advice for the physique templates: choose a wide variety of exercises in any given mesocycle. I'll 'fix' this next meso, but I'm dreading my multiple days of high bar squats and front squats and stiff-legged DLs. All good exercises, but still, you'll need the variety come the high volume of week 3.
My legs are shot and my low bar squats aren't going up too prettily right now... 4 sets at 165 and my reps are down from last week just due to fatigue (to be expected).

Tom, 42 sets?! I'm just gonna whine on your behalf, OK?

Lib, that bus ride sounds awful. :( Buses always make me nauseous...
Hope you're enjoying work, life, and working out!!

Karen, hi!!

'Talk' to you all soon...
Roz

Hi Everyone. I have been following Cathe's forums for years but have never posted anything. Now I need some advice from Tom. I have a bad case of elbow tendinitis. I have had it for a few years. Usually, if i lightened up my curls, it goes away. However, this time, it's much more severe. I have not lifted for two weeks, and it is still bothering me. I'm just wondering, Tom, what has worked for you. I LOVE lifting so I find this so frustrating! Thanks, Michele
