Let's talk Green Tea

green tea

Use very warm water to make your tea and leave the bag in for only one to two mins. This keeps the tea from being bitter. Green tea is very delicate.

Gosh, Ann, I haven't heard of that before. I wonder if it's something you're adding to the green tea? Or something else in the tea bag? Or maybe the caffeine bothers you. Do you drink coffee? Curious.

I love coffee and drink about two cups a day - black, strong and caffeineated. I don't add anything to either coffee or tea. I have had some success drinking white decaf tea. But green and actually black as well, typically bother me a lot.

I used to hate tea. I started drinking green tea with honey in it and eventually weened myself off the honey. I buy all of my tea from either adagio or rishi (www.rishi-tea.com).

I prefer Red tea (rooibos) but I usually mix my teas. So I buy a variety of green, black and red teas and mix them together. Makes it fun and delicious!

Trader Joe's Organic Green Tea is really good. It's the only kind I've found that I like, although I'm going to have to try Tazo's now because of all the recommendations!

Some of my favorite green tea is:

Organic & Pure tea - green tea with jasmine
Organic Sencha - green tea with ginger
Trader Joes - cranberry green tea
Trader Joes - blueberry green tea
I have also found some real good loose green tea at a health food store by my house. One is called spring cherry green tea.

LOVE tea, . . but heck I'm Asian. I'll drink Earl Grey sometimes w/a little half and half and honey. I drink my tea with a Gaiwan http://www.imperialtea.com/Gaiwans-C36.aspx
and order loose tea leaves from http://www.imperialtea.com/default.aspx. This tea is expensive but is the real deal. They have a store in San Fracisco. Heck I've had tea made from everything from corn husks, to dead bugs. It may be all psycological but when I buy the hard core stuff I feel really great.

I believe Beavs is the one who mentioned the actual leaf vs "dust". As far as the benefits go is the whole leaf better? My local grocery (Wegmans) has an awesome organic section so I would think somewhere in that huge selection there has to be something good! When I don't know it can be overwhelming! I am going to check out the web-sites posted.
I have noticed it seems to....uuummmm.....flush me out quite abit after drinking it.

I like Zen green tea.

And watch your prep method. If you do boil the water, let it cool a bit before pouring over the tea, and steep for no longer than 3 minutes. Hot water and long brewing cause bitterness.

Republic of Tea or Zen

But I'm a hard core green/white/herbal tea junkie. I just throw the teabag in water and drink it all day.

I really really love the Tazo Zen green tea with a big wedge of lemon in it -- YUM! Squelches my hunger and gives me a little pick-me-up!

There are a lot good different brands of Green tea's bags out there.

My favorites brand of Green tea is by Twinnings and Stash. They both have a lot of different types of green tea flavors. You could serve them hot or cold. You can buy the basic flavors at most stores or you could look them up in the internet to see the different flavors they cary.

Try not to pour boiling hot water over the green tea. Let the water cool a minute or two before you pour the water on the tea. Also don't let the tea bags sit longer than two minutes. The longer you let the Green tea bag sit in the water the more bitter the taste. You just have to play with how long you want to let the tea bag sit in the water.

I recently started drinking green tea. I'm not a fan of blends (like green tea with citrus, etc.).

Trader Joe's green tea is pretty good. Right now I'm drinking Twinings, also good. I like to go to a sushi bar once a week and drink theirs, too. :)

My Ikon Breville is still going strong, but I am seriously considering this one. :)

mint

My mom drinks green tea everyday. She brews it with mint tea. I don't know what band she uses, but the mixture is really pretty good.

Interesting article you might find helpful

Not sure why you are feeling the need to drink it three times a day, but I thought you might find this article interesting (I'm a coffee drinker, and can't bring myself to give up the coffee to drink green tea regularly- too much caffeine. Most people don't realize that green tea is caffeinated, and drink an awful lot of it- I know one woman who drank it beofre bedtime every night and wondered why she had trouble sleeping!)

Wu Long Tea and Green Tea Scam Warning!
By Tom Venuto
www.BurnTheFat.com

You’ve probably seen the advertisements:

“Drink wu long tea and lose a jeans size every 7 days!”…

“Burn 20 lbs of fat in 30 days with wu long tea!” …

Maybe you even watched Oprah a few years ago when Dr. Perricone said that switching your coffee for green tea would help you take off the pounds.

You may have also read or watched countless news stories which say how healthy it is to drink green tea.

The odds are good that if you’re interested in improving your health and losing fat, you probably either drink tea, take a green tea supplement or you’ve at least thought about it.

But what if I told you that most of the fat reducing claims for green tea were absolute, total BS, based on misinterpretation or deliberate misreporting of the research?

Unfortunately, it’s true. If you’ve bought green tea based on the claim that it causes large reductions in body fat, then you have been scammed.

Here are the facts:

Green tea DOES stimulate your metabolism.

However, the research is very unclear about what kind of impact this small, short term increase in metabolism will have on your bodyweight in the long term

In the most often quoted study (Dulloo, 1999), A swiss research team found that 270 mg of green tea extract 3X a day increased metabolic rate by the equivalent of about 79 calories on average and increased the oxidation of fat as the fuel source.

If you do the math, it appears that 79 kcal a day would add up to an extra pound of fat lost every 44 days. Not much, but you’ll take it, right? Hypothetically, that would add up to an extra 8 pounds lost per year.

What advertisements quoting this study don’t tell you is that this and other similar studies did not even measure long term change in body fat percentage or bodyweight. They only measured a 24- hour increase in energy expenditure.

One study which is used as marketing ammunition to claim that wu-long tea burns 2.5 times more fat than green tea was based only on a 120-minute increase in energy expenditure! (reminds me of that Mark Twain quote: “There are lies, damned lies, and then there are statistics”)

Numerous follow up studies have confirmed the short term increase in metabolism, but the studies are mixed on whether green tea improves weight reduction or maintenance in the long term.

The research IS compelling, but not conclusive.

As for ad claims that say you’ll lose a lot of weight just from drinking green tea… absolute BS! Hopefully the Federal Trade Commission will catch up with these scammers sooner rather than later, as the marketing messages on the Internet are getting louder and bolder every day.

As for health benefits - green tea is certainly a champ. It’s high in antioxidants and there are more than 2,000 research citations about potential health benefits of green tea (not to mention a 5,000 year history of use in China and the far east).

Even if you’re a skeptic, green tea is hard not to like and it’s hard to dispute that it’s a good idea to add green tea to your nutrition program as one part of a well-balanced fitness lifestyle.

But when it comes to claims for large and rapid losses in bodyweight and bodyfat, (especially the wu-long tea ads that are currently all over the internet), buyer beware.

The science we do have says that the thermogenic effect of green tea - while very real - is also very small.

Train hard and expect success always,

Not so much interested in Green Tea for the possible weight loss benefits but for the antioxidants it provides. Thanks for the info though.

Also I do make sure to buy the de-caffenated brand!!! No sleppless nights for this girl!

Lipton Green Tea to Go

I have never been a tea fan. I do like the Lipton sugar free green tea citrus flavor, but tea bags BLAH!!! A book I am reading has me convinced to drink 3 cups a day. So I'm giving it a try. I boil the water, steep the tea then pour it over ice. I'm still gaggingit down. Can anyone suggest a good flavor or something I can do to make this less miserable & more enjoyable for me. I'm using Salada green tea, strawberry & orange flavor.

Thanks ladies

I've been drinking Lipton Green Tea to Go for 5 years now - love it!
