Legislation proposed to ban ED commercials

Tami, exactly. :) Plus we want our kids to keep this kind of healthy relationship in mind when it's time for them to choose their partners. Your boys will most likely gravitate toward a relationship that mirrors what's between you and your husband.

There's a couple in our family that has a less-than-wonderful marriage. Really, it's to the point where if you spend any amount of time with them, the negativity starts to get to you. It's like a virus. It'll be interesting to see if their 3 kids break out of that, or if they'll end up in similar relationships.

Gayle... :D

I say, bring back Bob Dole's ED commercial.

Canadians don't have drug adds!!!

Hey... I was in Florida not long ago for a holiday and could not believe the ads. In Canada there are no drug ads allowed so there is no issue. I was unprepared for what I saw. The stranger thing was they had bleeped out Mel Gibson saying wiener in the movie I was watching and had put in winkie instead and then we had to sit through the ED ads that were way more graphic.
I have to say having never seen them before if find it very odd.

America is one of only two countries where prescription drug commercials/ads are allowed. I think there is good reason to ban them altogether but I doubt it is going to happen. The pharmaceutical industry is way too powerful here.

Laura, I think there is a difference between ads for tampons, midol, etc. and ED. I think female hygiene is in the same category as diapers and depends. It's a normal and natural thing as are sexual relations between people. What bothers me is the way those commercials are done, especially how women are viewed or portrayed.

I don't think it's fair to liken these ED commercials to tampon commercials. Menstruation is normal and healthy and banning commercials for feminine hygiene products sends women and girls (girls especially) a message that it's something to hide or be ashamed of. Besides, I never see tampon commercials anyway, though ED commercials seem to be running nonstop.

But don't you think a, ummm, standing flagpole is normal & healthy? Not to mention a requirement (well, OK, not if you're doing the clinic thing or something of the like) for reproduction, as is menstruation?

Lori, you are flippin hilarious! I almost wish you were my mom! :D

Actually I agree that banning prescription commercials is a good idea, b/c it can be done for public health reasons. I hate to even think about how much less our scrips would cost if drug cos. didn't spend $$$ on marketing.

I don't know about you all, but I have this cool thing with buttons on it and it magically changes channels when something comes on that I don't want to see. What's really neat is that Congress does not have to be involved whatsoever.

I don't think it would change anything in regards to drug cost. They charge whatever the market bears, it doesn't matter how much or how little they spend. Some of those drugs have several thousand or even tenthousand % markup. The marketing/commercials actually are a great investment for them with a HUGE return. The marketing budget of drug companies in fact is about 3 to 4 times their budget for research. Go figure!

Tampon ads don't promote sex or reproduction! Tampons and ED medication are completely different kinds of products. One is a health and hygiene product for ALL women, the other is a prescription drug for SOME men. Besides those ED commercials aren't aimed at men who want to reproduce, but rather at older men who are likely to be grandpas (and no one wants to think about that!) :)

Actually, you might be surprised at how common ED is in younger men. I have a really good friend who's dating a guy in his late 30s who has it. They're not all Bob Doles, ya know. ;)

While I don't exactly make this common conversation over a glass of wine w/friends, the ads themselves really don't bother me. I think it's a quality of life issue for both men and women, & I don't think they're so blatant that it's causing some morality issue (b/c let's face it, when you get right down to it, trying to legislate these commercials is pretty much trying to legislate morality).

Now if you want to see something that promotes sex, watch a couple of episodes of General Hospital! :p

In all honesty, we don't watch much TV at all, but I would much rather explain ED to my kids than what the he** was going on in the commercial for the latest gory Rated R Horror flick that the TV station decided to play during a family program or sports event

I was at a family wake, sitting among relatives, when my dad came over and announced, "Hey, guess who's taking Viagra?!" He pointed to my godfather, who was sitting next to me.

I responded immediately by slowly moving over one chair. :D Can't take my dad anywhere, I swear.

I would hope the commericals make it easier for guys to talk about this. I would imagine it's not a fun problem, and some might feel horribly embarrassed (which they shouldn't, but you know men). However if we treat it casually, then there's little to be embarrassed about, and guys can get whatever help they need without hesitation.

Anyway, that's my approach to the commercials. I can see why some are a little skittish about them though. Not everyone is comfortable discussing sex casually. Maybe I'm too casual.

Linda, I agree!

I'm gonna grab the conversation and run it downhill :D Beyond endless bodily function ads, has anyone else has noticed that every movie and TV show these days seems to feature scenes of someone on the pot behind a magazine or newspaper? Maybe the FCC should step in and ban doodie scenes. I'd be OK with that.

Lori, I think you need to be banned from this forum--you're making me laugh so hard my secretary is wondering WTH is so funny about a HUD grant.:D:p

Sparrow, I think I've missed the poo ads. After reading these posts, all I can say is thank goodness for the DVR!

Laura, should I not then tell you the story about a young male family member (no pun intended!) of mine and the personal lubricant he got for Christmas? My brother works for a company that makes the stuff, and every chance we get, we joke around with it. It's terrible.

As a matter of fact yes, and why!! I just saw it again on Medium, and it was all serious too, not sure why so much of that.

Hysterical comment above too about the bathtubs, never really got that part either.

The ED ads are annoying as all get out, but there seem to be a whole new crop of sex based ads going on lately, like the new Trojan products. However, whether anyone thinks it's right or wrong as a genre, and I don't care one way or the other honestly, it's about time, that women get some airtime on this subject, and that it's "OK" to talk about women having sex (not for getting pregnant) in a commercial, not just men.

I find myself singing "Viva Viagra"...every now and then..it is a catchy little ditty isn't it? ;)
