I am pretty new here so please forgive me if I am asking a stupid question. But, I'd like to know what other people think about fitting in both kickboxing (e.g. Kickmax or KPC) and lower body weight training (e.g. Pyramid lower body) into a rotation. Do you consider the kickboxing routines enough of a lower body workout that you need to wait 48 hours to do a lower body weight routine? I feel like I have to wait (I can hardly walk after the kickboxing), but maybe it's because I am just not in good enough shape. Are other people able to do these types of workout on consecutive days? Is it advisable to try?

Well, right now I am doing the rotation Cathe posted in March for intermediate exercisers and she has lower body or full body work after kickboxing on each week.

Also, before I started this rotation, my weekly work consisted of step aerobics Monday and Friday, kickboxing Wednesday, and full body weights Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, so I was doing lower body right after kickboxing, but not a full hour-long lower body or anything. Usually I was doing Jari Love's workouts which are about an hour total for the total body.

Maybe if you want to try it, and you find it too tough, you could just do a shorter premix of one or both workouts?

Judging by how you feel after kickboxing, I'd say it's working as a challenging lower body workout for you. It doesn't really matter if it is or not for other people.

For now, I'd stick with alternating upper and lower body (in both cardio and weights, for example, an upper-body focused cardio would be a boxing wokrout, lower-body focused would be step or kickboxing).

After you've done this for a couple of weeks, try doing kickboxing/lower body workouts on consecutive days and see how it feels. It will be a way of jump-starting your exercise routine and adding some intensity without necessarily changing the exercises themselves.
 
Hi and thank you for replying. This makes sense, especially with all of the premix options on the Cathe DVDs. I need to explore the pre-mixes, mix & match etc. to arrange something I can do (and work my way up to more). I also use Jari, mainly Slim and Lean. I am pretty new to Cathe but really like the major intensity she has on many of the DVDs.

Thank you! I think you are so right. The kickboxing is truly kicking my legs, hips and butt at this point in time, even though it is not using any weights.

I really like your idea of alternating upper and lower focus in both cardio and weights. Every cardio-video I have, or exercise machine (treadmill etc.) really focuses on lower though. Do you have any cardio videos you would recommend by Cathe or anyone which focus on upper body? I will also look around the web site here and look at the premixes on the videos I've got to see if I can do it that way.

Cathe is planning to do a boxing series in the future (that I'm IMpatiently waiting for, LOL!) which should be upper body focused, but for now, I find those kind of workout with other instructors.

Michael Olajide has an all-upper body boxing workout called "aerobox" (www.goaero.com). The workout isn't fancy, and the warm-up (which is just a stretch) leaves much to be desired, but for punching intensity, you can't beat it. He also did a workout with Kathy Smith, also called Aerobox, which is now on DVD with her Kickbox workout and a 15-minute Tai Chi workout, under the title "Kathy Smith: Cardio Knockout."

Rob Forcelli has a series of workouts called "Contender's Club" and another called "Speedbody" which incorporate a lot of boxing. I'm not sure if either is still available (even though "Speedbody" just came out this year). There are also some CIA (www.ciavideo.com) instructors who do boxing workouts.

With all of these workouts, there is usually some lower body work (it could be rather boring otherwise) like lunges or jacks, but you could take the intensity down if need be.
 
Thank you again! I just previewed the Kathy Smith aerobox on collage and it looks good. I will check out the others too. These boxing workouts look like fun and this is something new to me as well, which is always welcome. I will await Cathe's versions in the future :)
