Leg press vs. Step up vs. Reverse lunge on step

Can somebody explain the difference between the leg press, the step up, and the reverse lunge on the step?

I guess with the reverse lunge you start on the step, rather than the floor. Is that the only difference?

What is the difference between the leg press and the step up?

Thanks!

Hi Healthy Vegan!

In my DVD's the term Leg Press and Step Ups pretty much refer to the same exercise. However, in some of my workouts, Step Ups will be actual basic steps (ie: 10 right basic steps in a row followed by 10 left basic steps in a row -or- 10 consecutive alternating basic steps ) on a tall platform, whereas a Leg Press in my DVD's is a pressing up action all on one leg for the whole set before switching legs, again on a tall platform. Side Note: A Leg Press in a gym is usually referred to a unit/machine that works the legs in a variety of ways.

A reverse lunge is different. Yes, as you noted it starts from the top of the step platform.... and is also done on a much lower platform height due to the gravitational pull as you lower your body down with (especially with weights in the hands)

I hope that helps!
