Learning the choreography

Hi, everyone!

I'm a new Cathe fan and have 5 DVD's from the Hardcore Series. I'm a former addict of The Firm and also run, so I am an advanced exerciser. I have to admit, though, I am a bit confused by the fast paced choreography of Cathe's workouts. For the most part, I can keep up but do get lost lots of times. I find I end up pointing the other way or go up with the wrong foot from what the video is doing. I know the key is to just keep moving and such, which I do. I know, in time, that the steps will come it's just frustrating at first because it looks so much fun and I want to do it right.

Just curious how long it took some of you to learn the steps and be able to follow right along with the video.

Her IMAX 3 and LowMax are pretty fast. But, those moves are actually taught on some of her old stuff. I know Step Blast has helped me with some choreography, and even the classics and cardio hits.

Hi Bink5of5,

The best way for me to learn Cathe's steps is to view them the night before. And then practice, before you know it, you will be doing her steps like a pro.

For me, it just depends. Some things I just "get" and others take me forever! Right now my challenge is the reverse mambo in Low Max. Which looks really fun (I love the 6-count mambo) but I just can't get my feet to do what they're supposed to.

There is a move in Step Blast that took me several slow viewings before I finally got it. Go across the step, rebound back, rock back, shuffle up and turn and end up with a straddle. Took me a good while to learn it, but it's one of my favorite moves now. That shuffle up while turning confused me. ;)

I choose one or two hard moves to work on each time I do a new dvd. I rewind and pause and then step through the move in slow motion while I do the same thing on my step. This really helps me see what Cathe's doing with her feet!

I love it, though. Almost every other step routine I've tried has bored me, but I have 4 or 5 of Cathe's that I do on a regular basis. And I just bought more and I'm waiting for them to be delivered! I couldn't believe my good luck when I found her videos!

Keep at it, you'll get it!

This is why I love DVD's--I do a combo, push a button, do it again until I feel pretty comfortable and then I move on. This is how I learned Step Blast in 2 weeks...and it's still a helluva workout doing the same combo over and over again!:)

Thanks everyone for the advice. I know if I just keep doing the workouts I will learn them all eventually. It just takes time! Heck, I was just as lost when I started the Firm and I think I could do them now without even using the video!!!

I previewed it on the treadmill.
Then doing it i would chapter it back and back till i got it.
After you get it, you find you made it harder than it was..
If the shuffling confuses you do a u turn . Same thing, but shuffle your one foot and turn.
I promise. It will come...I was so mad when i tried the 1st time. I was determined.

I think the best thing you can do to learn Cathy's choreography styles is to buy the cardio hits DVD and do the three workouts for awhile. I think these work well because she spends much more time breaking down her moves and it takes out the frustration factor. This worked very well for me and I think it was worth the cost of the videos.

I learned Step Choreography at Gym classes I took with my Mom. It only took me about 5 classes until I became really familiar with the moves, and understood the names. from then, you'll start to understand harder moves, and react quicker when the instructor calls out hte next move.

Good Luck!,

Yes you'll get it! When I'm learning a new one I ususally rewind and work on the move (whatever it is) until I figure out the steps. I've been doing Cathe for many years so I can catch on really fast but I have this challenge with other instructors I'm not familiar with. Usually I'll have them down in two or three times but I do always preview which mentally helps me know what to expect.

Something that I like to do when I am previewing the videos for the first (or second) time is to run the DVD at 1/2 speed. That way you can actually walk through it slowly with Cathe (I do this without the step and really look goofy!) then as I figure it out, I speed the tape up slowly until it's full speed. I did this for Low Max and had no problem with the trickier moves.
