KickMax v. KP&C

midnight

Cathlete
I'm a step addict, partial to intervals like IMAX3, etc. Every once in a while I need a change from step but still need to do something cardio. I do have KP&C, the only kickboxing video I own and I find that it doesn't get me as wiped out as I like to be. I also think it's a little boring (IMHO) I've been reading all the great reviews of KickMax. Will it give me the extra "something" I need cardio-wise? It sounds great, just need to know before I buy.

Thanks!

I just did Kickmax this morning and it is an awesome cardio workout. It has high intensity bursts in it and really gets your heartrate up. It wasn't that difficult to follow (did take some thought though) and it was fun!

It's the only kickboxing of Cathe's I've done so far, but it is much more higher impact than your average Billy Blanks tape.

I think Kick Max was a lot easier cardio wise than Kick Max. Kick Max starts with 4 kick/punch combos that are easy cardio wise. Then it moves into intensity drills that are totally kick butt. Yet, they only last about 20 minutes. That is not enough hard cardio for me. I could have kept these drills up for another 20 minutes with no problem. All in all, Kick Max is a fun workout and I will be using it on days when I don't feel like killing myself cardio wise.

If you are looking for a good/hard cardio workout that has kickboxing in it, I would suggest Cathe's Cardio Kicks workout. That is one solid hour of sweat!!!! Awesome workout! On the dvd, it comes paired with her Circiut Max workout...another sweat fest!

LOL, :) Renee

Did you mean Kick Max was a lot easier than KP&C? I've been wondering this myself because I really like KP&C but haven't tried Kick Max yet? Is it too easy? I need intensity and I need my heartrate to be up there more than 40 minutes.

I was a tiny bit let down with KM. Like the previous poster said, the kicking and punching combos are too easy (IMO). I was surprised by how low my heartrate was during this segment but the blasts definitely made up for it in the end and the leg drills fried my legs. However, there is a Kickbox/bootcamp premix that alternates the blast with the combos (it's 50mins) and if you tack on the leg drills it's the entire workout reorganized. I haven't done the workout this way, only previewed it, but I'll probably do this premix rather than the workout as is.

Don't get me wrong it is really fun choreography wise and those leg drills are something to reckon with, its worth having it.

That's a great idea! I'll have to try that. :) Thank you. :)

Yes...I found Kick Max easier than KP&C and tons easier than Cardio Kicks. I am going to try the bootcamp premix Cruly suggested.

Don't get me wrong, Kick Max is good....but if you need 40+ mins of hard, solid cardio, I do not think you will get it .

I agree. I also thought KM would wipe me out and it did not. KPC on the other hand does - I love it. I don't have cardio kicks. The other think on KM, and I've never noticed it on any other Cathe workouts, is that the voice dubbing seems to be off track. Anybody else notice that?

I find KP&C to be tougher the KickMax. I really like that I can use my heavy bag on KP&C but found the combos on KickMax did not allow this.

Hi! My initial impression of KickMax is that the combos were much easier than KPC but I did KickMax again this morning really putting a lot of effort into my moves and I felt it much more. My heartrate monitor was also much higher than last week.

The first time I did this workout I dived right in without previewing (which is unusual for me but I was too anxious to wait!) so I spent more time concentrating on just getting the moves and of course rewinding when I didn't get a move or it came too quickly and I wasn't prepared.

I also did my hooks like Cathe does where she rotates her hip as she hooks - much more so than in her other kickbox workouts - and that seemed to make a big difference in the combos.

For overall cardio conditioning though, I still think Cardio Kicks is her best kickbox workout to date.

Having done KM a few times now, and also being a huge fan of KPC, my opinion is that KPC is higher intensity throughout the length of the workout, while KM is actually more intense at one point but it is a more short-lived intensity. I am happy w/KM because I think it has a lot that KPC doesn't. For example, the balancing that's necessary to do some of the kick combos and also those conditioning drills at the end. Between the longer length and great variety in KM I feel like I'm getting a great workout.

I did KickMax yesterday for the first time. It seemed deceptively easy at first but I like the slower pace b/c I think my form will get better and I will be able to keep my heart rate up by focusing on implementing the move with all I have. I like that there is varying intensity of cardio to choose from and I think KickMax will be great to use in conjunction with KPC. For a really intense workout one could do the high intensity drills from KPC and the 10 blasts from KickMax then finish off with the leg drills from KPC or the floor work from GS Legs!

I also use 1 lb. weighted gloves, and that really helped kick it up a notch. I am going to try the Boot Camp premix thought, that sounds awesome.

This mix idea is just making me sick thinking of it! - but would definately be challenging, though I don't think I could handle it...yet :) Keep your evil ideas to yourself Angela, j/j, let us know if you pull it off!

I've just previewed so far, but I would have liked a longer kick/punch section! It seems over way too soon. I DO like the choreography in it, though (but someone should tell Jai to keep her guard up, and stop punching that poor 4-foot-tall oppponent! LOL).

I assume that Cathe split up the low impact and high impact to appeal to both those who want low impact and those who will accept nothing but gut-wrenching, high-intensity, take-no-prisoners, lose-your-cookies intensity from Cathe. Nonetheless, the flow would have been better, IMO, if the two were alternated (showing effective, intense, low-impact variations for those who prefer it).

It IS possible to get high intensity just using kickboxing moves!

As an aside: Cathe's kickboxing form just keeps getting better and better!

Hmmm. Maybe I'm not doing KP&C with enough intensity. I'm not a regular kickboxer so I should probably work this one before I get KickMax. It sounds from all your postings that KP&C is the better workout.

Thanks for all your responses

Kathryn you took the words right out of my mouth. I love seeing how Cathe's kb technique has evolved from CTX to KickMax.

JulieL...that mix is a mere thought for me. If I do attempt it, it won't be anytime soon. For the time being, I'm having fun with the workouts as produced!

I just did KickMax for the 2nd time, changing the order of most of the exercises, and I got a MUCH better workout this time. The first time I did it, I found the combos to be way too easy cardio-wise and the blast section way too intense. My legs were also so tired after the blast that I couldn't complete the leg drills with good form. This time I did the warm-up followed by leg drills. I then did the 1st 1/2 of the blast (through plyo heel taps), then the 1st 2 kick/punch combos, then the rest of the blast and then the last 2 kick/punch combos. I wish the blast section had chapter breaks in it, but unfortunately it does not so I had to ff a bit. I really enjoyed the workout a lot more doing it this way! :)
