Kickboxing videos?

I usually go to the our apartment complex's fitness center for my cardio workouts where I can use the treadmill, elliptical, recumbant bike. But sometimes I'd like to be able to do a cardio workout at home. I love Cathe's videos for weight training, but I'd like something other than step for cardio. Any suggestions? In one of the forums, somebody had mentioned a kickboxing video they liked better than Tae Bo, but I don't remember it.

Thanks,
Melissa

I love Larry Lam XKO - It's high energy and the music is great. I'm not that fond of Kathy Smith's. Cathe has a really good kick box video - Cardio Kicks.

I will recommend Janis Saffrell I loved her CIA tapes and got Kickit Strikezone and Kickbox intervals which I love. She does whop it up a bit.

I don't have any Powerstrike tapes so I can't recommend them but I like Sherrie Jacquelyn (also CIA). I also liked Strikezone Bootcamp which was another CIA tape with Terri Reeves but that also has mixed reviews she makes lots of noise during the workout.

Hi--

Can any of you who have Powerstrike tell me a little more about them? I have heard alot of people give rave reviews, but I don't know how they would compare to a Cathe tape. Are they for more advanced exercisers? How does Powerstrike compare to Cardio Kicks?

Thanks in advance,
Lynn

Wish I Knew

I ordered all 3 Powerstrike videos based on reviews I read at VideoFitness and a bunch of posts everywhere saying they are fabulous. Now I am waiting impatiently for the mailman.

BTW - if you are interested in them when someone responds to this post, I ordered all 3 from cksales.com and the total was $66.18 US after conversion rate, that included shipping. I thought it was a great deal.

I found Powerstrike a little boring, you work one side at a time, it seemed somewhat repetitive and rather long, after doing it 3 times I traded it. I found Cathe's Cardio Kicks much more fun and I was sweating like crazy at the end, It's more aerobic than Powerstrike. For when you don't have much time I also love CTX Kickbox, it just flies by and once again a great workout!

Hi Annabel--
Thanks for the feedback on Powerstrike.. From what you have said, I think I will stick to Cardio Kicks and CTX Kickbox, which I absolutely love!!

Hi - It's intersting that you find them boring. Others give it rave reviews. Is the music good and motivating and how long are the videos? (Powerstrike). What other kickboxing videos would you recommend other than Cathe.

I only had Powerstrike 1. It might be that I need a lot of variety in my workouts. I think the tape lasted for approximately one hour I don't remember the music, I think it's like a constant beat and that's just fine. At the end of a workout I like to feel like I 'kicked Butt' and I never felt that with Powerstrike. It's a good tape if that is what you like, it just didn't work for me. The other thing I didn't like was how you work one side for what seemed like ages to me before you switch to the other side. The only other kickbox tapes I have owned were Aaron Langford Power Kicks which I liked, and a Janice Saffel which wasn't my cup of tea. It's been a couple of years since the Janice tape and she might just have some that would work for me now, so if any of you have her newer tapes, please share your thoughts as I would like some more kickbox tapes.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-17-02 AT 12:40PM (Est)[p]I'm sure you'll get mixed messages with Powerstrike. Those who prefer high impact aerobic videos will probably not like Powerstrike. There's very little impact except for an occasional jumping jack or jogging in place.

I own three Powerstrike videos and Cathe's CTX Kickbox and Cardio Kicks videos. I prefer Powerstrike because it is a low-impact pure kickboxing video not a hi/lo kickboxing flavored video. Powerstrike videos are approximately 50 minutes. With Powerstrike, you'll get good music, good form instructions, and a good cardiovascular workout. As you perfect your form, the intensity of the workout increases. I use weighted gloves with Powerstrike and I get a good upper and lower body workout. I stay within my target heart rate. I feel invigorated not exhausted after completing a Powerstrike video.

If you are interested in learning more about Powerstrike, do a search at the videofitness.com message board. There are tons of threads about the series.

Crystal - Thanks for the info. I'm wondering if they're similar to Eversley Forte. I enjoy his now and then, usually once a week.

Thanks again - Mary Ann

Oh, by the way - Have you done Cathe's Power Hour and if so can this be done with dumbells instead of barbell. Also is there a step involved. Thanks

Have you done Larry Lam's XKO - Don't know if it's your style. It's very fast paced, large crowd of exercisers in a huge industrial style gym setting, good music for the workout. Again, it's non-stop kicks and punches. I'm always drenched at the end. there's also a bonus tape with kicking drills. These are tough too.

I started out with taebo and I too became extremely annoyed with him and his preaching. His daughter annoys me too. No this is not like that at all. It's fast, but his counts are accurate and I think he's got a great personality. You can preview the video at his web site - studiokicks.com. After doing his, I'm constantly searching for something in the same class. Just my opinion. I'm at work and this site really distracts me. I wish I could go to a fitness store right now and browse. Oh well.

I own Power Hour. The video description indicates you need a barbell, various dumbbells, and a step. The step is (1) used as a bench for chest and tricep work, (2) provides support when doing one-armed rows and tricep kickbacks and (3) used during shoulder work. I don't have a step bench and do chest work lying on a firm surface on the floor. I don't think this is optimal but this is what I'm doing for now. If you have a variety of dumbbell weights, I don't see why you couldn't use them instead of a barbell in any of her videos.

I went on the Video Fitness website last night and reviewed some of the videos you and others suggested. The Larry Lam XKO video sounded good as well as the Powerstrike Millenium series. Anyway, can you purchase the XKO one somewhere besides his website, like at collage video or a sporting goods store? Also, do you need a lot of room? The thing that turned me off about Cathe's Cardio Kicks was the high impact and the wide area needed to do the workout.
