Kickbox

Man o' Man!!!

Every time I do Kickbox or C. Kicks by back and lat muscles are SOOOOOOO sore. I am never sore in the lower half but my back is so sore it is uncomfortable.

Is this expected? Am I throwing punches too hard? Why am I not feeling my lower body?

Hi Slenamond:

I don't have kickbox, but I've been doing Cardio Kicks a lot lately. I never get sore in the lower body.

The first few times I did it, I was really sore in the neck and shoulder area. Ouch! But that went away after a few more workouts!

Have you been doing any of Cathe's weight oriented tapes? You may need to build up your lats and lower back. Pure Strength Biceps, Back and Abs may help.

Sometimes my lower back is really stiff if I don't properly stretch out my hamstrings and glutes after a hard workout.

I always do a little yoga after Cardio Kicks. It really releases my tight muscles.

Just some ideas. I hope they help!

That happens to me too! :)

I believe it is because of the different use of the arms/back muscles as kickboxing drills use more of a "rotating" motion rather than the typical "up and down" motion of weight training. That is why I like to add kickboxing to my rotations...to get to the "in-between-the-muscle-fibers" that are not always used. (That is my theory, of course...not that I read it anywhere.) :)

Punches do work the lats, so you're doing everything alright. For lower body, you might want to concentrate on the inward motion to see if that will help. When you kick out, try to bring your leg back into the bent leg position (the term for it eludes me for the moment) as fast as possible--as if you were kicking into fire, or as if your leg were like the tongue of a frog whipping out and back quickly. You should feel it more in the hamstrings then.

Hi Kathryn - I believe the term you are looking for is "recoil."

Chamber the kick (pulling back the leg in preparation)
Snap the kick out
Recoil (back into the chamber position) before you put the foot down.

Hope that helps.
