just getting on board

Hey everyone,
My name is Susie and I am new to the Cathe forum. I discovered her on fit tv and was impressed with what I saw. I have recently lost 30 lbs. and have about 20 more to go and have only walked and watched what I ate to lose this weight. My husband is currently serving over in Iraq and has been away for a year and has until May before he comes home and I would love to be in shape when he got back. Could you please give me some suggestions as to which dvds to buy to get started. I welcome any and all advice and just want to be in the best shape possible. I am 41 years old and work full time at a bank and have 2 children who are very busy with church and afterschool activities. I recently bought a treadmill so I could walk whenever the weather doesn't permit me to get outside but would love to hear from you all with suggestions on where to even start. :) Thanks a bunch

Welcome Susie! I found out about Cathe from Fit TV as well! I can't believe almost a year ago. I think I own just about all the DVDs now! ;-)

My brother was serving in Iraq, but is back in the states for the meantime.

As for which DVDs to suggest....hmm. What type of work outs do you like? Kickboxing? Step Aerobics? What kind of equipment do you have at home?

I think the CTX series would be a good place to start. It has cardio, weights and abdominal work on 2 dvds. I just got this one myself a few months ago, but I really use it a lot.

I know you'll get lots of suggestions here.

Congratulations on your weight loss! This is definitely the right place for you!

Thanks I am so excited about this forum and I know this is going to be the best support system ever!! I love any kind of aerobics, kickboxing ect. I used to dance at Disney years ago so I do have coordination and can catch on quickly but I just love a great work out I am just getting started again though, been through a long slump of losing myself and not staying in shape or staying healthy. I have dumbells and the small steps that came with The Firm workout and a treadmill. Hope that helps you with giving me some suggestions. I will check out the CTX series. Do you think they will be too hard for a beginner or is it the type that you can modify and work up to the full workout.
Thanks again for your time and look forward to chatting with you again.

I forgot to tell you to thank your brother for serving over in Iraq and for sacraficing for our freedom. I am glad he got home safely and hope he doesn't have to go back anytime soon. :)

Susie, congratulations on already losing 30lbs with so much on your plate to begin with (no pun intended). CTX is a good recommendation because you can play around with the different workouts. That was my first Cathe purchase, too. See if you can get your hot little hands on a full-size step and maybe some dumbbells. Those along with your treadmill should keep you busy for awhile. Then of course, you'll be wanting more, but we'll cross that bridge...

I also wanted to thank you and your husband for your sacrifices. Good luck to you & keep checking in with us.

Hi. I don't have any recommendations for you but I just wanted you to say thank you for serving to your husband. My husband got back from a year long deployment to Iraq back in October. I hope everything is going well and it is good that you and the kids are keeping busy while your husband is away. Good luck with everything and God Bless.

Hi Susie, and welcome to the Cathe forums. I think you're going to love it!

I only have the beginner DVD's and Power Hour, which is a total body strength training workout, and I love those. You'll need a barbell at some point but you can cross that bridge when you come to it, and you can modify many of the moves with your dumbells in the meantime.

Please, my thanks to your husband for his service. I read your post in the Ask Cathe forum and wanted to tell you the "DH" stands for Dear Husband, (or darn husband, or...)LOL! (that means laughing out loud). Don't feel bad--I've had to search the internet to figure out what half of the abbreviations mean. Don't worry, you'll catch on.

Another welcome, Susie. Glad to have you around. I'm not going to make any recommendations since you really can't go wrong with any of Cathe's workouts. Best of luck to you and a salute to your husband.

I second the "CTX" (short-script for Cross-Train Express, a 2-DVD set that has six complete cardio+Strength workouts) suggestion, and I'd also like to suggest the Timesaver DVD, which is a compilation DVD of workout segments from the Body Blast series, also organized into 5 cardio+strength workouts. Don't worry about the "beginner" part. You'll catch on quick.

Good Morning Susie,

Thanks! Please thank your dh as well! They are all making a huge sacrifice. My brother just re-enlisted. He feels very strongly about what he's doing, so I'm happy for him. I just worry a whole lot - big sister's prerogative. ;-)

Someone mentioned that you can't go wrong with any of the Cathe videos and they are right. Just be careful not to do too much too soon. I speak from experience! LOL!

Looking forward to seeing you on the boards!

Dallas

hi susie!! i see that you mentioned you walk outside and use a treadmill.........so i suggest you start with cathe weight training...she has a lot to choose from and her dvd previews are all over 10 minutes each!!!! i love her cardio too, but i didnt see you mention strength training in your post!

Hi Susie! Just wanted to join the others in welcoming you to Cathe's place. You are in for a real treat! Hang around and you will learn so much! I also recommend the CTX (Cross Train Express) series as a great starting point because it offers a great variety...step/kickbox/interval/circuit/Hi/Lo and also strength & AB work. Congrats on your weightloss so far. I do believe because of your enthusiasm and commitment you are making, that your DH is going to see one FIT gal when he returns! Add me to the group in thanking him for his service and all he is doing for us. Keep us posted on how you are doing. There is always someone here to help with your questions. GOOD LUCK and WELCOME!

Susie, welcome!

I third (fourth?) the CTX recommendation. This is a great series to start with since the workouts are shorter and of a great variety. However, if you enjoy step aerobics, I would suggest Cardio Hits (three awesome workouts as long as you don't mind the dated buttfloss clothing - poor Cathe!) and splurging on the Original Club step. This was my single best fitness purchase last year. Make sure it's called the "Original Club Step," though, as there is a shorter variety out there and you really want the big one.

I'm glad to hear your DH will be home soon. I can't imagine how difficult that must be. My brother was in Iraq the first time around when he was only 19. That was a terrifying time, but he came home, and your DH will, too.

Take care & good luck.

Susie:

Welcome!

Great advice. You can't go wrong with CTX in terms of variety and results. I did a month rotation after a year off and got great results and found the motivation I needed.

Congrats on the weight loss too!

Hope to see you around!

Thanks Dallas,
I have told my husband via email thank you from all of you. Appreciate the support!!! He too feels strongly about serving and I admire that in anybody.
Thanks for the advice to not do too much too soon cuz I am very guilty of doing that even with dieting and then I get burned out and put the weight back on. It is a vicious cycle.
Have a great day

Hey Marla,
Thanks for your response and your advice. I am excited to get started and I will definitely order the CTX since that is what most of you all are recommending. Can't wait to get started.
Talk to you again soon. Thanks again.

Hey Toni,
I know you know what I am going through first hand. Some days are better than others but thank God for children. They keep me busy along with my job. Is your husband full time military? My husband was in the Marines and got out and got into the National Guard reserves and loves it. Of course he is ready to come home from over there but feels strongly about what he is doing. I hope your husband doesn't have to go back. Keep me posted and thanks again for your encouraging words.

Hi Susie,
I vote for either CTX or the Timesaver BodyBlast DVD (because of your dancing background). The Bodyblast DVD is just plain fun and you can easily increase your intensity by going from a 6" step to an 8" or doing 2 body parts a day.....you don't even realize you're working out. I frequently use the Bodyblast Timesaver as an add-on to my regular workouts. CTX is more difficult and just as versatile. I just thought you might find the BodyBlast Timesaver more fun since you like to dance. Either way, you just can't go wrong:)
