Just curious - Gym vs. Home

Just interested in how many of you go to the gym and/or work out at home. I started off with a gym membership and then started with Cathe to have something to do on the days I couldn't make it to the gym. Over time, I've aquired all of the equipment used in her workouts (dumb bells, bar bells, bands, etc....) and I've almost completely stopped going to the gym in favor of working out at home - I work two jobs at the moment and just want to go home at the end of the day! ;). My gym membership is coming up for renewal in a month and I'm wondering if it is even worth renewing. Is it possible to stay fit just using the videos and doing the monthly rotations at home?

I gave up my gym membership years ago. I have been working out at home mostly to videos since 1996. In between, I had a gym membership for a year, was only able to stick to it for about 6 months. I should tell you that I have only been doing Cathe strength workouts for about a year, I am converting over from mostly Firm's. I have been able to stay in great shape with the Firms, but I want more intensity and Cathe offers that and more. I am slowly learning her step workouts also. There is no doubt that you can stay in great shape at home doing Cathe's workouts, when it comes to home fitness she is at the top!

I love working out at home. After a 10 hour day at work, if I actually had to GO somewhere to work out - doubt that it would happen. I've been working out at home since 1977!!!

I only work out at home. I don't have time to go to a gym and back.

Maybe use the money you would use to purchase a membership and get a treadmill instead!

Thanks Sherry! I have felt kind of guilty for lapsing on the gym, but it just does not fit well into my schedule. Working out at home is so much more convenient, especially since I live in the sticks and the gym isn't exactly down the street. ;) Now, if I can just talk hubby into a treadmill or eliptical machine, I will be all set!

That is exactly how I feel! I love the people at the gym (a great group at the one I was a member of), but home is still where I want to be after a long day at work! :)

I work out exclusively at home. Over the years I have built up my home gym to include a treadmill, stationary bike, barbell, dumbbells, bands, balls, an almost complete Cathe library - along with other dvds (other instructors and yoga and tai chi ...)

I think I get as good a work out here at home as I would get in a gym, PLUS I don't have to drive anywhere, buy any special clothes , or wait for a specific piece of equipment to become available. I don't have to try to fit into a class, since Cathe is my personal instructor and I take her class whenever it works for me!

I did belong to a gym once many years ago and for me this is a much better set up.
I think whatever gets you working out and sticking to it is what you should do!;-)

Home Exerciser 100%...Can't stand sweaty gross machines unless all of the sweat is from me! Also, kind of funny, my first gym experience (and last) was not good because the owner of the gym was arrested on my third visit. Apparently, he was peeping at all of the women in the tanning beds. NICE! He had a camera and everything. After that experience I vowed to stay home. :)

Lol! That's terrible!

I work out mainly at home. I also go to a fitness boot camp 3 days a week. We work outside most of the time or in a facility that has no heat or air conditioning. I don't consider this a gym as there is no membership fee, you just pay for a 4-week session. We use no gym equipment either just hand weights, kettlebells, tires whatever they dream up. Last night we ran an obstacle course with fire hoses, tires, sledge hammers and logs. I'm not a gym person and never will be.

Hi.

YES, it is TOTALLY possible to get and stay fit w/o the use of a gym! I was never a gym person. I tried but could never get into it. Up until about 10 months ago I worked out strictly at home and had much success! It was about 3 solid years of working out religiously at home before I decided to give the gym a shot again. Now, I love the gym too. My home work outs and the gym compliment one another nicely. I know I always have options now so I never have to skip a work out because I can't get to the gym or whatever. I love them both and don't ever want to give either up now! This is just me though and it took I think 3 previous and failing attempts w/a gym membership before I began to like it. There is no rule that says you have to go to a gym to get fit. Do what makes you happy. If you find you are not using the membership and don't have any real desire to stray from your home workouts then cancel. If the time comes that you are again interested, you can always re-sign. BTW, my main motivation for joining a gym was because I wanted to start running and we don't have room in our home for a treadmill. I run both inside and outside now, but in the beginning it was strictly the TM because running outside is much tougher!

Good luck!:)

I never, ever had a gym membership. Doubt I ever will! People ask me all the time what gym I go to and are amazed when I tell them I do everything at home...I just roll the dumbbells out from under my bed, load my bar, grab my bands, step and dvd!

Hi:

I do go to the gym 2-3x/week most of the time, but I would say the majority of my fitness comes from home workouts.

I am a runner, and live in Michigan. So, I need access to the treadmill esp. during the winter months when I can't run outside.

I also do like to use some of the machines (esp for back and chest work) that one would find at a gym. However, if I couldn't go to the gym, I am extremely confident in the fact that home workouts are more than ample to meet my fitness needs. ( I do almost exclusively Cathe workouts at home.. dabble a bit in P90x but always go back to Cathe esp. in re to strength workouts.)

I workout at home. Can't stand the sweaty machines.....

I've retired and still don't have time anyway to go to the gym. Never owned a membership in my life. You can do this at home, with your family and or friends. (if you have extra equipment like I do)

Have fun at home!

I also used to be a gym person a long time ago. I discovered Cathe on fittv and was hooked. So I converted. I love it at home. Now I am working on creating a Cathe + library of dvds. I don't have to feel intimidated or figure out what class fits into my schedule. ( I prefer classes to machines) No stress, No worries. Pop in a dvd and go!!

I was a gym goer for a long time and that was where I did most of my workouts until I started buying the Cathe dvds. Now I do most of my workouts at home because it is so much more convenient. I did keep my gym membership however because I'm the type of person that likes to mix it up every now and then. I like going to the spin classes and group classes every once in awhile. I also use the cardio machines on days that I can't go out running due to weather. I do believe though that you can totally get in great shape working out strictly at home esp. with Cathe.

Both for me. I do my serious weight training at the gym. I'm very space challenged at home & just don't have the room for a lot of equipment, & I love the variety the gym offers.

Most of my cardio is done at home--some step but lately I've become a kickboxing addict. I also do core & circuit at home. I think it comes down to about 50% at the gym, 50% at home.

I only workout at home. I have been thinking about checking out a new gym that just opened up near my house, but I just haven't gotten there. Anyway, it's taken me a bit, but I have acquired all the necessary Cathe equipment that I feel I need as well as a new elliptical trainer, so I think that I am set for a few more years of Living Room workouts!

I gave up my gym membership a few years ago. I don't miss it one bit. I have everything I need at home - elliptical, treadmill, weights, step, etc. and I get just as good a workout or better. And, I don't have to worry about the 30 minute drive to and fro.
