Just wondered if any of you guys have had glandular fever (mono)? - I have been feeling very lacklustre and have had a sore throat and as well as having iron deficiency anemia, I discovered that that I also have mono (went to the doc for bloodwork). I have been teaching up to six (intense!) classes a week and thought that I was feeling flattened because I was unfit.

Sooo, if you have had mono, how long did it take you to get over it?
I believe that you need to take at least four to six weeks off all exercise. I wonder if *watching* Cathe videos counts :( ? :)

Thanks for your input,

when I first got sick my blood tests came back positive for Mono and then it turned into Fibromyalgia!!! so my recomendation is EXERCISE!! and yes the better you eat the better you feel, I am a lousy eater so of course I pay, I have been ill with it for 12 years. Those two are the most important things to help you feel better! I am sorry you are sick I know how you feel, I have been there, the doctor told me that diagnosed me is that there are days that I am going to feel like an AIDS patient in the last three months of their lifes. Good luck.

My first boyfriend had mono and it knocked him out for about two weeks after he was diagnosed. It was about three months before he really felt like himself again. His doctor told him to take it easy for about a month or so. My boyfriend was not very into exercise anyway, so I don't know how soon he would have been able to work out.

Are you allowed to walk?

If I remember correctly, the rest is essential because the disease weakens you and exercise could cause permanent damage, maybe because your body is trying to heal from the illness.

(Oddly enough, I never got mono, even though I spent all of my weekends nursing him.)

Hi girls,

Thank you for your replies. From what I've read, high intensity exercise (such as what I was doing) can, in some cases, cause rupture of the spleen (charming, I know!) and liver damage. One of my brothers has had it and actually sustained liver damage.

I'm pretty sure that I could go for a walk as long as I didn't tire too easily, but I don't even feel like that :(

Leslie, I believe that aerobic exercise is excellent for fibromyalgia - so good for you for sticking with it!

Cheers,
Liz N

Hi,
I wanted to tell you I had the mono 2 yrs ago. TRUST ME, DO NOT WORK OUT! Don't even walk much for the first week or so. You'd get extremely tired and pass out. I was in bed for a week straight sleeping then the second week I was able to move around a little bit. But it really wore me out. Any fast movements can rupture your spleen even if you crash into something. Take it easy, drink a lot of orange juice if you can. I did that. For some reasons I crave OJ more when I have sore throat and it doesn't even burn me. Drink a lot of cold water, too and REST! Do not worry about working out at all. I'd wait a month or two before you do any high impact work out. You'd be too tired to work out. Before I had the mono, I worked out a lot and was very healthy. I was only sick with the mono for 3 weeks and went back to myself. You might bounce back fast like me since you work out. Please take my advice and REST for as long as you can. DO NOT THINK ABOUT WORKING OUT. This is very important especially for your health. You're just going to hurt yourself and prolong the illness if you go back to high or even moderate impact workouts. Take care of your body and LISTEN to it. I was happy I did and I felt better faster than most people. Take care of yourself and let us know how it goes.

No you don't want to do high intensity workouts with it, you want to do walking and very very low impact like water aerobics. I didn't get into high aerobics till now. My kids pediatrician says Mono is very common with teens, he says 90% of kids will have had mono by the time they graduate, and he says once you have it you will always carry it even though you won't suffer from it. It will from time to time shed and when it does that it will be contagous.

Leslie, I'm in my mid thirties, so this is all rather a surprise for me. I had put it down to "being a mother" exhaustion!

Hotspur, what you've said echoes what I have heard too. I don't know how long I have had it, but I have been teaching about six high impact classes a week and just feeling dreadful. Anyway, I have taken a six week break from teaching and haven't done anything for the past few days. It really feels weird doing nothing, but the plus is that I don't feel like it anyway. Thanks for sharing your experience.

cheers,
Liz N

I was 28 when I was diagnosed with Mono. I sure hope you feel better soon, take care of yourself and get plenty of rest as rest is the best medicine, the doctor that diagnosed me put me on prozac because he said that is the only thing that will work. get a good doctor. and take care, my prayers are with you, I know how you feel.

What are the symptoms? I wonder if that's what dh and I have now. My nephew and nieces all were sick and got dh and I. We have not been sick in so long (cold wise). I have a horrible sore throat, and have had headache and tired from doing nothing for 2 wks now. I can't workout - which is killing me. Just viewing bb over and over learning corphy.
I had a fever the first day, but not anymore. Nothing can get rid of the headache (not advil, tylenol) and I'm blau.
What are the symptoms. I thought it was a strange cold that wouldn't go away, a new bug. Didn't consider going to the Dr for that.

Faythe,
It sounds alot like how I felt when I got mono (this was 10 years ago). But I had a horrible headache and sore throat. It put me down flat on my back for a month. I mean, I had to ask for help to roll over from one side to the other!! I can laugh at it now, but then it was really annoying. REST is key. I would definitely at least call your doctor to see if they feel you should come in.

REST.. I got it in college MANY years ago. YES the killer swollen glands on the throat. It took me several months to recover. Be good and nurture yourself as you get better.
