It's about that time again...

I'm talking about Halloween!!! We were out yesterday and picked up some costumes for the kids, cookie cutters, new decorations and DH and I watched Fright Night - love that movie! This is our favorite, and I think the funnest, holiday - seriously, we celebrate the entire month. I am loading up my Netflix queue with scary/Halloweenish movies. Anyone want to share what are your favorites are? What movies scare the you-know-what out of you?
We just recently enjoyed two that were pretty campy and super fun, Boy Eats Girl and Fido. Not exactly Shaun of the Dead but along those lines and pretty clever, I think. :)

I love Shaun of the Dead-hilarious! The Others with Nicole Kidman scares me to death-even just thinking about it. There's this really old movie called Burnt Offerings that I saw as a little girl that freaks me out to this day. I'm more of a psychological thriller fan rather than gore.

I love Halloween too Missy! I will also be loading up my Netflix Queue with all kinds of scary movies - much to my DH's dismay because he HATES scary movies. Have you seen the previews for "Quarantine"? That looks REALLY freaky. Some of the old standbys that I will be watching in October though are: Halloween 1 & 2, The Orphanage (love it), Sweeney Todd & Sleep Hollow (luv me some Johnny Depp), and any other old Jamie Lee Curtis movie I can get my hands on - The Fog, Prom Night. I love the older cheesy stuff. ;)

Oooh, the 1980 Prom Night? I have to check that out! We watched the one that was recently released and I was pretty disappointed... and I wasn't even expecting much. Brittany Snow is SO cute and that's really the only reason I watched it.

Another one that we always watch is Pumpkinhead. It is so outdated but I love it!

oh man, I forgot about The Others! That is one of the scariest movies I have seen I think. I agree with you about psychological thrillers - I like slashers, but the thrillers freak.me.out.

I just checked out Burnt Offerings on Netflix and it stars Oliver Reed - I love Oliver Reed! Can't wait to see that one.

Missy - I just watched the newer Prom Night too and found it kind of "ho hum.." too - not scary at all. Am I the only one though who found the killer strangely hot? I do think Brittany Snow did an excellent job of looking truly terrified throughout the movie. I think had the killer not been shown as much and kept more in shadow, it would have been scarier. He was less of a bogeyman and more of a normal guy with a really psychotic crush! ;)

Nothing wrong with Pumpkinhead! ;)

I remember Burnt Offerings! I saw it as a little girl, too, and could never get that movie out of my head!

I like watching old black & white movies on Halloween. Usually TCM or AMC will have a Halloween film festival, and it's usually pretty good.

In terms of scariness: Alien, Aliens, The Fog, The Shining (those creepy little kids...eek!). I'd suggest "The Ring" but I think I'm scared to watch it again.

I also love anything Tim Burton - Nightmare Before Christmas (is it a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie?), Sleepy Hollow (Liann, you and I are on the same page here: Johnny Depp...delicious), Beetlejuice...

Afreet - I love the Nightmare Before Christmas! That one is perfect for Halloween and Christmas! I also love The Corpse Bride. Basically anything Tim Burton!

Any of those you mentioned would make me pee my pants. My boys are finally old enough where they will watch them w/o being in my bed the whole night.
I love the month of Oct too!! It's just so much fun!! This is the first year my boys are to old to trick- or-treat, kind of depressing!!
So there's a question - How old is to old for kids to trick-or-treat? Then I'll tell you their ages.

I'm a HUGE Halloween fan too! I could eat my weight in candy corn, and I love old scary movies, like Rosemary's Baby and The Shining. I turn my kitchen into a "witch's kitchen" every Halloween with potion bottles and brooms hanging up. The kiddos love it!

Heck, I went trick-or-treating in college! ;) I usually had someone younger with me though, you know, to make it legit! ;)

Hey, that sounds perfectly fine to me! Would I look ridiculous trick or treating with my kids do you think? I don't think you are really ever too old, and I can't believe that there was a time that I actually thought I was too old (meaning too cool) to go trick or treating. I must have been a sophomore. DH and I love to see older "kids" trick or treating because they have very creative costumes. We have had that guy with the shrunken head from Beetlejuice, a Christmas tree that would put anyone's most elaborate creation to shame, a vagina (now that one was interesting!), you name it.

i LOVE

the fall and halloween. i dont have any kids so trick or treating is out for me. :( but, i love the scary movies...halloween 1 & 2, the shining, the omen, exorcist. for a newer movie, i actually liked Scream and saw (the first one).

i now live in valencia, ca, and fall seems like a million miles away as there is absolutely no fall color on the trees, just green or dead, and it is still so f'ing hot here.....i miss the cool weather, backyard leaf burning, chili, hay rides, fall festivals, pumpkin pie.....sorry, i got carried away there.....

i too remember burnt offerings....those old scrary movies are just the best....

I love the old horror/thriller/suspense movies from the 50's and 60's!

Some favorites are:

The House on Haunted Hill
The Day The Earth Stood Still
Dracula with Bella Lugosi
The Fly
The Haunting (1963 version)
The Incredible Shrinking Man
Invasion of the Body Snatchers
The Invisible Man
Nosferatu
The Spiral Staircase
Ten Little Indians

I also LOVE that episode of the Simpson's where Mr. Burns and Smithers harvest Homer's brain and transplant it into a robot. At one point Mr. Burns wears Homer's brain like a coonskin cap, the spinal cord trailing down his back, and he prances around chanting... "Look at me, I'm Davey Crocket!". I LOVE that!!

For me, there is no real age limit. I will give candy to any kid who rings my doorbell wearing a costume, and is respectful. I figure if they are ringing the doorbell, they're not out egging:eek:
I like the older kids, they are fun to scare!!! The girls are really funny with, "OMG, that made me scream so loud!" Most of the girls have reactions filled with such drama! It cracks me up.

I have a huge display for the kids. No gore, or jumping out with chainsaws. I have fog machines, creature crate, and scary tunes. I find creating the scary atmosphere will get their imaginations going. Most of the fear is what they create in their own mind.

Ok, once, I put my son's head in the middle of the dining room table covered with a dome (removed the center leaf and had him sit under the table). I asked the trick or treaters if they wanted the special treat under the dome. Those who were eager to get the extra special treat....got it! That was a good scare! LOL :D
I don't scare the little ones.

My favorite part of this time of year are:

Apples, Candy Corn......and the scary shows on tv! I love it when the Travel Channel does the shows that focus on haunted places throughout the country (inns, hotels, houses, etc.) It completely freaks me out but I love it!!!

I'm not much for scary movies since I live alone. I end up scaring myself silly and sleeping with the lights on for days!

Like others said though I am much more a fan of psychological thrillers than chainsaw movies. The Others will Nicole Kidman is one of my faves!

Only you, Michele. Only you. :p
