Is this the Year of the KettleBell?

Love Kettlebells and they very well may be the trend of 2011...but from what I see and hear (and personally equally love)...TRX is hot on it's tails!

At least we have something for everybody and every mood to chose from!!

Happy 2011!

Not for me. I really don't like kettlebells at all. I always feel like they are an accident waiting to happen. Now TRX is a completely different story. That looks great.

This is the year for kettlebells for me. I love those things!!! I hope to get a TRX once all my debt is paid off.... (maybe as an Easter gift?, just a few more months on the house payment and then i will celebrate!!)

I caught myself looking at Indian Clubs last year....so I'm not really discounting anything this year....:)

Had to ask the Google. Those look fun. But I can totally see myself clonking my noggin with one of those. Ouch!!!

I've been waffling on the KB for a while now. Can't make a decision.

I think the TRX looks like great fun, too!

Hey Cupcake, at first I thought "What?" but I do remember reading somewhere about kettlebell form, that's a good thing right? as opposed to the stair-stepper (machine) butt?

Did also read this interesting thread:

Hi,

I think it's a good thing as I've recently noticed it's up and significantly rounder. It used to be pretty flat.( I hardly notice it) But a couple of days ago it made me stop and look and I realized it had to be those swings. It has been the only thing I've changed because usually I jog ( which doesn't help the genetically flat butt, I know, but running keeps me sane. ) and I have to admit, I grew a butt.

I also notice that all that talk about movement patterns and functional fitness really do translate to real life. The Turkish Get up for example ...which at first I thought was kind of foo foo until the other day when I got up from a seated position at the park ( we were dangling our legs on a dock over the lake ) and I got up flawlessly and my sister was looking at me weird. Then she got up and it was quite a struggle for her. I remember thinking...oh so that's what the Turkish Get up is for!

I wish I had access to RKC trainers though but since I don't I did invest in the AOS Kettlebell clinic and watched a lot of Youtube demos from Steve Cotter.

So it's not like I just picked up a KB and started hip thrusting away. :D
I'm starting to get the Snatch, it's an aha moment when you realize it really is all hip.

An expensive rope with a carabiner

I've been out of the loop for a few months, what is TRX?

that my trainer uses to torture me with. :p Very high quality though and only someone who hasn't been through a workout with one would snicker at it.

Highly recommend it!

last time (only time) I swung an indian club was middle school.

...I've been looking at benefits of the kettlebell for a while too but haven't decided if it's the right time for it, TRX hasn't hit my radar yet, the whole suspension contraption thing? I don't know, elastic resistance is very effective, it just doesn't quite fit in with what I'm doing this year. But that doesn't mean other people won't really love it.

:)

Hi Guru...I've recently started with the stepmill at my gym. Can you tell me more about the 'stair-stepper' butt? You don't sound happy with it. :(

I'm pretty sure that one is a myth, emphasizing anything done in excess will have an effect, & maybe not the one intended, not to worry, mkeefe!.....:)

I'm pretty much over kettlebells. I don't find they really hit the muscles the way I want them to and there's too much potential for injury. Kind of fun once in a while, especially the swings, but not for serious strength training for me.

Yep -

I agree.

My iliopsoas and shoulder agree too.

How about both?

I have a dvd on my desk right now called "TRX Kettlebell Iron Circuit Conditinoing" made by Fitness Anywhere (the TRX people), that is a circuit combining TRX exercises and kettlebell training. The KB training portions are instructed by none other than Pavel Tsatsouline himself; the TRX portions are instructed by Chris Frankel. I'm currently smack in the middle of the STS 6.5 month rotation, so I haven't cracked this baby open yet (I'm chomping at the bit!). In the past I've done Pavel's 12 week KB program (as laid out by Anthony from Art of Strength), and I've used the TRX a LOT with my clients and myself. I think both forms of training are very beneficial, but like anything else, they aren't the only way to do everything. Sometimes I prefer good ol' weight lifting, sometimes I want nice steady state cardio, sometimes I want functional fitness. Combining all forms of tools and training is how I like to do things, so I'm thrilled about this dvd. I also love the BOSU and the step, and the Bender Ball, and Gliders, and bands, and the stability ball, and medicine balls (a huge fan of the medicine ball). Why confine yourself to one thing? They all provide benefit, variety, and allow you to keep changing things up. There are many days when I use no equipment at all, for both cardio & resistance training. The best fitness tool to have for 2011, and every year, is a good imagination. :D
