Is P90X that great?

I see that a lot of you use P90X and you all seem to love it. Is it that great? Am I really missing out on something? My neighbor played me one of his DVDs and I told him it looked lame and he should get a real workout DVD like one of Cathe's :) Sorry, maybe I shouldn't judge on the 2 mins that I watched but it definitely wasn't Cathe quality. I did preorder STS and I do plan on ordering Chalean extreme but now you all have me on the fence about P90X, I feel like I need that too. Is there anybody that doesn't like it? Do I need to give it a real chance?

There are lots of people who didn't like P90X, but you certainly can't judge it by watching 2 minutes of one workout.

As far as it being lame, it's equally as advanced as Cathe, sometimes more so, but very, very different. And I think you either love Tony, or you hate him.

There's a place in everyone's collection for more than just Cathe (yeah, yeah, I know, sacrilege, right?;)) and everything deserves a chance before you pass judgment.

mmm... I find Cathe harder.

It feels different with P90X... I feel I had a good workout

but some Cathe DVD's are much harder and more fun.

I prefer Cathe

I miss her actually

it's my 5th week of P90X. I am enjoying it. But can't wait also for mid september and get back to Cathe. But change feels good too.

I have to say p90x is my all-time favorite, and I've gotten the best results with it, which I think has less to do with Tony and more to do with my body type.

Sparrow,
You like him even more than Cathe? Yikes, I think I'm going to have to add P90X to my wish list!! Aren't they coming up with P90X2 (or something like that) maybe I should wait for that.

At the risk of losing my life :D yes. I love Cathe, and had great results from point a to b, but couldn't seem to move on when I wanted to progress from point b to c. P90x pushed me over the hump. And I prefer the overall training system of P90x. For weight training I mean. Cathe's cardio is superior, IMO.

Thumbs Down

Hi Jlsahli!
I personally did not like P90X, but like others have said it really is an individual opinion based on experience. (As a side note, funny I saw this post as I sit in my living room with a P90X infomercial on) LOL

Anyway, there wasn't much variety except for the upper body. Other than that, you do the same cardio, abs, leg workout and yoga for the entire 90 days. I didn't care for Tony's corny jokes or his shameless flirting with some woman named Dreya. It was okay the first time I heard the jokes and such, but after the 10th time... you catch my drift.

The workouts are intense but very different from Cathe. There aren't a set # of reps, rather you basically do as many reps as you can based on your goals in the time alloted for each movement. There is a timer on the screen and Tony will say go. It was a little too fast paced for me, I like more structure and time to breathe! Oh yeah, and I hope you like push ups because there are TONS. He doesn't really do (from what I remember) any other movement to work the chest. I dislike push ups since they tend to bother my shoulder, and much prefer weight work for the chest, so that was another negative point for me.

I just got really bored with it, fast. I can't comment on a major transformation since I only stuck with it for 5 weeks. I much prefer Cathe. She has far more variety and never loses my interest!

Good luck!

Which DVD was he flirting?

I noticed that he is annoying in some DVD's and some women (in The chest and back), I dislike so much... the way she talks... but as with Jari Love, I forget what they are saying and focus on the workout

I 100% prefer Cathe but still enjoying a change in my workout.

But in mid december, when I am done, I am back to Cathe... i miss her :(

But I want to stick to P90X anyways, because I am still enjoying it and want to do the full 90 days.

I am curious which DVD he was flirting that you are talking about?

I'm not a huge fan of P90X. I developed tendonitis in my shoulder from all of the non-stop pushups. I also found the workouts boring. The back and chest, for example, is basically just variations on pushups and pullups/pulldowns with a band. Just a couple other random moves. The Kenpo is just stupid and pointless. I wasn't thrilled with the legs. I did kind of like the Plyo, but Cathe has that, too. The yoga was good, but you can find other equally good or better options. For the price, I find it's not worth it. I look much more forward to Cathe workouts. I'll be selling my P90X soon.

Now I'm on the fence. My DH and I were going to start this soon but I was hesitant because of the price and because of how much I love Cathe workouts. I've heard so many praises about the system but if the only upper body movement is pushups, then that is not for us. My DH has tendonitis in his shoulder that is finally healing and maybe P90X is not for him. Being this close to Christmas, I may be holding off.

Nope not a fan of P90X. I got sucked into the infomercial and the posts of people raving about it here so yes I bought it. I think that it is a good quality advanced workout. I just care to much about teaching style and music and Cathe will always be my #1. I would suggest that you borrow one of your neighbors DVD's and just try it for a better understanding of what it entails. Of course I'm also not a fan of the cardio coach revolution that a lot of people here seem to like too. I just can't get into the someone talking to me while I run thing. It just seems creepy and strange, . . . like the whole hearing voices in my head thing. I just want to listen to fast heart pumping music and motivate myself, but hey everyone is different. Oh and Charlene's hips scare the crud out of me.

I'm with Sparrow. I love Cathe and she is what really got me into weight training, but P90X is what I really saw (and felt) results from. You have to really push yourself w/ P90X, I really saw how much heavier I could lift and can do full pullups from the program. I think it's an awesome program, but to each their own. ;)

I was surprised to see P90X for sale at London Drugs and Shoppers for $99.

Really? The full package or just DVD's? It's $120 from TBB, and that's guaranteed. I've had other people buy it from ebay or other places and it's now the full set, only DVD's & no manuals, etc.

They are selling 12 DVD's and it's in an "as seen on tv" box. On the london drug web site it said the price is in effect till the 26th so maybe after that it will go to $120.

Pushups are not the only upper body movement. He also does chinups, pullups, chair dips, lawnmowers (1 arm rows), heavy pants (double arm rows), back flys, alternating shoulder presses, in and out bicep curls, 2-arm tricep kickbacks, deep swimmer's presses, upright rows, flip-grip tricep kickbacks, two-angle shoulder flys, crouching cohen curls, lying-down tricep extensions, congdon curls, side tri-rises, in and out straight arm shoulder flys, scarecrows, overhead tricep extensions, Y-presses, pour flys, weighted circles, throw the bomb, slo-mo throws, front-to-back tricep extensions, fly-row presses, dumbbell cross-body blows, 21s, elbows-out lawnmowers, standing bicep curls, reverse-grip bent-over rows, open arm curls, static arm curls, congdon locomotives, one-arm corkscrew curls, curl-up hammer downs, supermans, in-out hammer curls and strip set curls.

I happened to have had my worksheets with me today.

Like Jess, Cathe is the one that started me on strength training but Tony brought me to the next level.

Tony does a wide variety of pushups so it didn't get boring for me. Chinups and pullups are great for back strength.

I've done two rounds of P90X and am currently doing a rotation of two weeks of S&H and two weeks of P90X. I like P90X because it's a push-pull method and that works better for me. In most of Cathe's workouts, she exhausts each body part before going to the next. I find I always need much more rest between sets than she does in the workouts. With Tony, I can proceed much quicker because he never does more than a set for each body part but does go back to it if the workout has two rounds in it.

HTH.

I didn't like P90X. I get three weeks into and just couldn't keep going. I thought the workouts were good(and I didn't sell it for this reason alone...one day I may want to try and go back to it) although I do like a little more variety.

My biggest gripe was Tony. I read the best description of him and what I didn't like about him on Yahoo last week. This is from a review of 10 Minute Trainer(which, for the record, the reviewer did like):

"I think Tony Horton is the most annoying excise video instructor I've ever seen. Which is huge because I've watched a lot of exercise videos. You know that guy who, when you're on a date and conversation isn't easy, just babbles about everything, starts making up words, starts fidgeting and reading the menu aloud, tells you about the time in third grade that he took the class gerbil home from school then lost it? Yeah that's him, The Babblemeister."

I couldn't have said this better myself...and it was what ensured I would not be able to complete P90X. :)

I'm finishing up my third week of Phase 1 of P90X (which I'm doing for the first time), and so far I've gotten great results! My arms are toning up and getting more definition, and it seems like my body fat has dropped. (I'm not weighing myself for a few weeks, though, so I won't obsess if I gain any weight.)

I think that P90X was just what I needed to shake things up a bit with my workouts, and I'm surprised at the results I'm getting since the program uses so much less cardio than I'm used to doing.

That being said, I am already starting to miss Cathe's professionalism and fun demeanor, and I think I will soon be adding in some of her cardio since it's been hard to only see Tony six days a week. ;)

ETA: Oh, Pippa, that's exactly it! Tony IS The Babblemeister!
