Is it possible....

to lose weight if you don't like fruit and veggies?

I have been stuck in the 170's all year. I exercise regularly but my eating is less than stellar.

So if it calories in versus calories out is it possible not to eat fruit and veggies and still lose? I buy with the best of intentions and ending up throwing more away.

How can I make myself like this food group enough to get at least 3 servings let alone nine?

Jenn

I do not like very many fruits or veggies, I usually end up eating the same ones again and again. For me, I will eat an occasional banana, green apples, strawberries, broccoli, green beans, and carrots.

I think that fruits and veggies are really necessary to cut your calories and lose...

I agree...a balanced diet needs to include these. I am doing much better with my weight loss goals since I've added more fruits and veggies.

How about a fruit shake? Mix together some frozen berries, banana (I buy, then chop and freeze), grapes, etc, pour in some Crystal Light, then zap it in the blender. You can drink 3 servings easily this way. I take mine in a thermos to work, so I can sip it throughout the morning.

Hello Jenn,

In my experience, yes it is possible. It is, as you say, calories vs calories out and as long as you are eating less calories than your body requires then you will lose weight. I have lost weight before eating all manner of junk food because I was cycling so much everything was burnt off.

What's important to take into consideration with fruits and vegetables is that they are nutritious and provides the essentials vitamins and minerals that your body needs. And as you are exercising your body needs them more than ever. It's important to eat them for healthy hair and skin, a diet of junk food will never give you that. They also provide fibre, which is important for your digestive system.

Have you tried making smoothies? They taste like milk shakes. Or making a fruit salad with some yoghurt? Mix fruit with some food that you do like and eat them one after the other.

I hope you can overcome your aversion to fruits and vegetables for healthy reasons.

It is possible to lose weight without eating tons of vegetables. I cut calories basically by cutting all the junk out of my diet. I have gotten better with the veggies and fruit though. I eat what I like even though it is limited - apples, bananas, pineapple, melon and grapes. For veggies carrots, corn, spinach, green beans, peas and broccoli. I'm not a big salad person but I stick to what I like and what works for me. I have gotten more adventurous in trying new fruits and veggies. I feel better overall when I eat healthy. I also take vitamin supplements to make sure I'm getting what I need to the nutrients department.

Sure. I lost 30 lbs on Atkins in about 8 weeks. The diet doesn't even allow for fruit, & veggies are limited. It was probably the easiest diet I've ever followed (especially b/c I'm not a big fruit fan).

You just have to make sure you take vitamin supplements, as with any diet.

Hello,

WOW! Thirty pounds in 3 weeks? What was your energy level like though during those 8 weeks? Was it easy to restrict yourself on that diet? How much of that weight have you put back on (if any).

:+

I think fruit is easier to eat if you go with something you can some what stomach, and you have it in smaller pieces...or disguised all together. I like apples and bananas - I just tried a pomegranete (sp???) the other day for the first time and it was sooo sweet..I was surprised. I like honey dew and cantelope, and of course watermelon, but only when they are super sweet...I hate fruit that is sour. Like strawberries are sour to me...but it could be that I'm comparing it to sugar in my diet? I don't know. I think the importance of veggies and fruit in a diet is also for the fiber...it fills you up on less calories, and it cleans your gut out too. High fiber in the diet lessens your chances for intestinal cancer.

I know some people put spinach in their baked goods and things like lazagna too - they hardly know it's there. There's a book out by Seinfield's wife...forget the title, but it's ways to put veggies in "regular foods" (like spinach in brownies) - maybe you could check that out for ideas?

If I want to lose weight I MUST eat clean. For me watching my d**t makes all the difference in the world. Fruits and veggies fill me up without the calories!

I just lost 13 pounds in 5 weeks (and 11 inches). I ate mainly high fiber/low calorie/low carb/high protein foods. I ate a little bit of fruit (bananas, pineapple and a few strawberries), but that was in yogurt. I don't tink that I ate even one veggie. I don't like them either!!Adding more protein and fiber is critical, too.

It can be done, but you have to watch what you are eating and of course...exercise more!!

Good luck!

I found Atkins the easiest diet I've ever done. But it is restrictive when it comes to certain foods--a lot of people can't handle not eating bread, pasta or fruits.

My energy dropped during the first 2 weeks but after my body adjusted it returned to normal. I haven't gained any of the weight back & now do a modified Atkins, closer to South Beach.

I think diets are very personal--it takes a lot of research & experimenting before you find something you can live with & something that actually works.

Good luck! :)

The question shouldn't really be can you lose weight without them but can you really be healthy without fruits and vegetables?

Yes, you need fruits and vegetables. You are not really healthy without them.

You need to find solutions to include them in your diet without necessarily being aware of it. You are like the child picky eater. I have one just like you. So, what I do is make my own spaghetti sauces, stuffed full of veggies and lentils for extra iron, protein and fibre, then, the key is to puree the whole lot with a blender, before serving on pasta. With your tomatoes you can include green and yellow squash, eggplant, carrots (which add a delightful sweetness), celery for flavour, and loads of red peppers (for cancer fighting antioxidants). My eldest child and personal picky eater eats this sauce on pasta several times a week and has no idea that she is eating vegetables, which she swears she "hates.";-)

This is the veggie equivalent of the fruit smoothie and between the two, you should stay healthy enough, and yes, lose weight too because the fibre in fruits and veggies help you feel full more quickly than all the fatty foods in the world.

Also don't forget the other forms of fruits and veges which can be perfectly good choices as well such as frozen and canned with both fruits and veges. As with anything watch the labels for added salt and sugar, but it can be a good alternative. I tend to forget about these b/c when someone says "fruits & veges", my mind immediately goes to fresh fruits and veges.

I agree with the other posters that for good health, you really need to include these in your eating plan.

Thank you for all of your replies, I would just like to clarify that I don't hate fruits and veggies. I just don't like them enough to eat everyday at every meal. I will try to work more fruit and veggies in. If I do a protien shake for bfast I can put a banana in it or any fruit that would go well with chocolate.

Thanks for the ideas about adding veggies into spaghetti sauce.
I am one that doesn't like many veggies.

Green beans and lettuce is about it, although I do like tomatoes, which are actually a fruit.

What about that V8 fusion drink. They say they are supposed to have 1 serving of fruits AND 1 serving of veggies. I might be able to force something like that down even though I don't like sweet drinks.

What a great idea! I'm going to try that this week. I'll probably use jarred sauce and steamed veggies. Maybe some extra Italian spices. Rejar it in plain mason jars and take it to my mom's for Christmas and insist we use my special sauce. My mother and my brothers' kids won't have a clue they're eating veggies! LOL.

I agree with Clare, you need the fruits and veggies for vital vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and even water.

Just wanted to add...if you are consuming any processed foods, you may not be tasting what fruits and veggies **really** taste like. Unclean foods alter our taste bud sensor capabilities. Detoxing the body of unclean foods is the way to get the most flavor out of natural foods. If I have 1-2 days of eating some kind of processed foods, I immediatley notice a decline in the flavor of my clean foods. As soon as my body is detoxed of the **poison**, everything tastes heavenly again! It's actully an excellent motivator to avoid anything processed!
