Absolutely Laura! In time you might find that you want to add the barbell into the workout for more variety but for now, use your dumbells. They will be 100 percent effective!

This is good to know. If I outgrow my barbell for some exercises (one can dream...), I was thinking of using heavier dumbbells.

Barbell optional!

I use heavier dumbbells for some exercises. If I can't safely get a barbell onto my shoulders (for squats), I use heavy dumbbells instead. All you have to do is hang on ... and they make lifting straps to help with that! And I like holding a single heavy dumbbell low for plie squats, rather than holding a barbell up under my chin.

And DH, who works out with me, never uses a barbell (although I think he should!)

I don't have a barbell!

Cathe said dumbbells are okay to use if you don't have a barbell...but for all you Catheletes out there...is it time to invest in one for STS? I have a set of dumbbells, bands, ankle & hand weights, AND a home gym with push/pull machines. $$$ is very tight right now and can't find any used barbells anywhere. The cheapest 100lb set is about $100. Dumbells can get very unpleasant to hold with heavy weight...any suggestions?

I would check out walmart, I got a barbell set a couple of years back with the bar and weights for $20.00 it probably came with about 120 pounds.

I like using a barbell, although I too use dumbbells for heavy squats, lunges and plies. I don't like the bar on my back and HATE holding it in front. And I have a short, padded Firm barbell.
