Interesting videos on importance of vitamin D

Holy cow! I am glad you posted this! This makes me think about how I get sick almost every other month! I just started taking my multi vitamin again, and I think I'll go eat a mushroom smoothie! LOL!! Thanks for sharing that. I think everyone would love to make their immune systems smarter! I know I will!:p;)

We have RICKETS in the US in 2009!!!!! have seen it myself on Xray. That is deplorable!!!!! We have "protected" ourselves so well from the sun, that we aren't getting our daily " natural" dose.

I take my boys outside every day for 20 minutes in the sunshine. The rest of the time they wear sunscreen.

Vitamin D must be absorbed via sunlight. 20 minutes is the daily minimum.
And a fortified diet doesn't hurt, but it doesn't take the place of the sun!!!

Kathryn! You are my Shero!!! I'm off to watch it. I am dangerously low/deficient in vitamin D...taking a very potent supplement. Very worrisome. Thanks for your keen eye and mind regarding these health issuses. Deb

Great reminders!

I agree with this. I try to get out in the sun for 20 minutes everyday and soak up my vit D. It feels GOOD and I know it's much more efficient way to get vit D than a pill (which I also supplement with after I got my blood work checked and being very low in Vit. D).

For some reason I didn't know that sunscreen inhibits vit D absorbtion, so I also do 20 minutes with no sunscreen (except on my face and scar) and then if I'm staying in the sun longer I'll put on sunscreen.

I also make sure I get out in the sun for about 20 mins a day with no sunscreen. I had been very sick and in the ICU for a month a few years ago and when I got home all I wanted to do was sit out in the sun. I followed my inclination and would do this every morning. It felt great and so healing. I just continued doing it. I was out on our deck the other morning and looked around at my 2 dogs and 3 cats all lying out their sunning themselves and thought this has to be good. I go out about 9 or 10 a.m and stay for about 20 minutes.

Thought I'd bump this, as it is important with flu season coming up (increasing natural immunity through vitamin D).

I recently got orders from my general practitioner to spend about 15 minutes a day in the sun, & orders from my derm to never ever let the sun touch my skin.

I wish all these docs would get together & make a decision. This is just too confusing. I guess a supplement could take care of it, I'm just not sure how many more supplements I can take on a daily basis. :p

Could you protect your face, and let your arms and legs get exposure? (that's what I do).

I think the concern is more cancer than wrinkles. Two squamus (sp?) carcinomas this year--on my leg & arm! Not my face, thank goodness. No more sun for this beach lover. :(

Just wanted to say that when we expose ourselves to sunlight we are not 'absorbing' vitamin D. The skin produces Vit D when exposed to UV rays from the sun.

Since sunscreen blocks UV rays, and our skin cannot make Vit D when we are wearing it.

I found out I was quite low in Vitamin D after a blood test in Mar/Apr. Major supplementation over the spring/summer brought my blood levels back to normal. It is amazing how much better I feel. It was a major effort to get through the minimum amount of requirements of my day when I was originally tested. Now that my levels are normalized I feel better than I did 10 years ago. That is saying a lot given all of the medical problems I have had over the last 2 years. Now I am a total proponent of having your vitamin D tested and normalized.

Kathryn,
Thanks for the wake up call. I've been putting off Vitamin D supplement out of pure laziness. I slather on SPF 70 everyday because of a couple of suspicious moles removed. I'm off to the store to buy Vitamin D and Calcium as soon as I hit reply.
