Injured myself with Disc 17!

I did a number on my back and neck with Wednesday's leg routine.

The night before, I noticed that the right side of my upper back and neck were a little sore when I went to bed, and still a little sore in the morning. However, I get that sort of thing a lot, because my job involves sitting in front of a computer all day. The pain is isolated on the right because of mouse use. In any case, typically it's not a big deal. I've learned to live with it.

On Tuesday I did a kickboxing DVD using weighted hand gloves, so my shoulders got a little extra that day. But again, not a big deal. I do kickboxing with weighted hand gloves every week.

Well, I did the first two sets of tri-sets without any difficulty. When I started the third, I reached for my two 40-pound dumbbells and started the set of squats. And I felt this unbelievable, sharp, shooting pain in the right side of my upper back, neck, and shoulder. I put the dumbbells down and basically collapsed on the ground.

I was hoping it was a temporary situation, and I decided to try to soak in a bath. I went to run the bath and discovered that there was no way in the world I was going to be able to put my body into the bath. I could barely move my upper body without intense pain. I lay down on the floor in the bathroom and discovered that I could not get up again. Every now and then I see a television show where somebody "throws his back out" and cannot get up. I always thought that was exaggerated, but now I know
otherwise. I was laying on a bath mat and my head was sliding backwards on the mat -- that really hurt!

I knew I had to get up. Unfortunately, I was upstairs and my husband was downstairs. I lay there calling his name and saying "Help!" (I was definitely reminded of the fallen and cannot get up commercials.) Finally, I determined that I was going to have to do this myself, because he would not be able to hear me. I found that moving slow was ineffective. I did not make any progress. So, I rolled over onto my side and then stood up. OUCH!!!!! That was the worst pain I've had in my life. Now I know what "dizzy with pain" means! I was so light-headed that I only made it out into the hallway and collapsed on the floor again. This time I was closer to the stairs, so my husband was able to hear me. He helped me up (again, ouch!) and got me to a couch.

Now, I had some vicodin left over from a root canal. I had saved it for emergencies, such as this. I'd like to note that I almost never take any sort of pharmaceutical product, not even aspirin. But I did not hesitate this time.

I spent the day in bed, which did feel better. Over the day, it improved slightly, enough that I can move from one room to the next, and I can spend about 30 minutes in front of a computer (like now!) If things aren't much better tomorrow, I'll go the doctor. I'm pretty sure the doctor is going to tell me to wait it out and relax, and possibly proscribe muscle relaxants. I'm not sure I want to take them. (I just took the one vicodin. I really don't like pharmaceuticals. I'm very careful about what I put in my body.) But if things aren't improved, I'll go back.

In any case, now I am wondering what to do. I'm sure this will get better with time (hopefully not too much time, because I was on a roll with STS). However, now I'm a little afraid to pick up those 40-pound dumbbells again. It wasn't the first time I had used them. In fact, I had already used them for narrow squats in the same workout. I think it was just an unfortunate and unlikely occurrence. But I'm worried that my back may be weakened and the same thing may happen again. Basically, I think all the heavy weights were too much for my upper body.

Does anybody have any suggestions or thoughts? I know a medical professional is who I should be asking in general, but I just curious what other STS folk would do. Anybody have a similar experience?

I don't have any sage advice for you, but I sure hated on your behalf to read about that horrible experience. Good luck with getting yourself healed and back up to speed.

I noticed that I was stiff in the upper back/neck area after 17 this week and thought it was because of the sit 'n' slides. I figured I was holding my head/upper back improperly. I have had issues with tension, muscle spasms and disk issues since 2000 and so my right side (neck/shoulder/upper back) gets knotted up and spasms now and again - or aches constantly. NOT FUN!

Not sure what to recommend other than DO NOT BE A HERO - take the muscle relaxants if you have to - they will help stop the spasming... once you break the spasm/pain cycle, you can heal but not until then.

If you have a good dr. he can explain how the pain cycle works but basically the pain cycle (and spasm cycle) is like a wheel with cogs... if you can throw a wrench into the cog and stop it, it will give you time to heal... which is why with anti-inflammatories you must use them as they say... if it's every 12 hours it is every 12 hours - not 12.5 hours - because you open the window for the pain/spasm wheel to start spinning again. When you use anti-inflammatories to pre-treat pain (such as several menstrual pain), you start the meds on, say Sunday and continue on the 12 hour (or whatever cycle the meds require) and stay on it - that way the wrench is in the pain wheel cogs ahead of time... reducing severe pain significantly.

Call the doc and explore physical therapy. They can do the electromagnetic therapy as part of the process and their stimulation of the muscle tissue will also counteract the spasming (reducing the need for the muscle relaxants since the shocks disrupt the firing of the nerve cells). My last round of PT for my neck/upper back/shoulder was at my insistence and I got a great PT and he helped SO much. DH has similar issues (on the left) and he has a TENS unit (to do electromagnetic stuff at home) and it is great to have if you really need it. The you can use it to stop the cycles and usually avoid muscle relaxants and only use something like an anti-inflammatory med.

Regardless, you need some rest. I am so sorry you had this happen.

PS Back when my neck stuff started, my neck muscles would spasm so bad it would jerk my head toward my shoulder - it hurt and it looked weird!

(((((((hugs)))))) I hope you feel better! I "threw my back out" once and had severe, sharp, shooting pain around my entire rib cage after doing a particular weight exercise. It took awhile to heal - but, it DID heal!!! I went to the doctor, got an MRI, etc. I just needed to rest. It took a good month or two to be totally fine. You really need to go to the doctor just to get an opinion.
I will be thinking about you and wishing you a fast recovery! Hang in there!! You will heal.

OW!!!! Oh, I am so sorry that happened. Take it easy. I am by no means a medical professional, but I wonder if you didn't pinch something important or slide something out of position. 40 lbs dumbbells are heavy, and if that side was already hurting, you may have grabbed it funny or pulled up wrong. I think you need to see a Dr and get some good solid professional advice. Take the rest time you need, STS will be around when you get back. If you try to go heavy on an injured back/shoulder, you may really mess something up for good.

As for the computer mouse, I also catch tension from that in my right shoulder/neck/back and wrist. I switched my mouse to the left side, and alternate sides. I don't have a problem mousing left handed bc my dad is a leftie and therefore my 1st computer mouse was on the left side. It may take some getting used to, but it should help alleviate the right sided mouse stress.

geez

That just sounds HORRIBLE. I am so sorry. I kinda live in fear of injury, myself. I've had a couple and one did involve my back. No way would I begin to give advice for something like this -- just wanted to offer very sincere condolences. I think I will mention though, that when I messed up my back (after it had awhile to recover) a chiropractor ended up being a helpful part of my recovery. Also, sometimes pain like the sort you described can be nerve (as in pinched) related. Chiropractor's may be able to aid in treatment of something like that, too. Really, I hesitate to mention any of this, and only do so as possible idea's to investigate or mention to your physician, if you're so inclined (ugghhh. No pun intended with the 'inclined' - not very funny). Then again, some people would frown at the mere mention of a chiropractor - my dad - he'd be bummed that I'd even suggest such a thing. So. I don't know. I guess the only thing of substance I really have to say is that I am just so sorry and my best hopes for a miraculously speedy recovery! ~ Lori

I had a similar situation once and I went to the chiropractor the same day. He also put me on around the clock antiinflamatory meds(spelling) and I went back several times for some therapy that they do as part of the treatments at my office. I can only speak for myself, but doing the immediate chiropractor adjustment, the meds, the therapy and then heating pads at home really helped heal fast! I don't know if you have what I had, so you just need to go get an opinion, but waiting it out is not your best or fastest way to go in my opinion.

I'm truly sorry this happened to you! I would be so bummed to have to stop STS for anything! Makes me kind of scared that I might do something like it too. :(

Hang in there and I hope you recover quickly!

ice and heat too

Oh, I am *so* sorry for you. I can definitely sympathize -- I have been there too, laying on the floor, having thrown out my back during a workout, screaming for DH to come help. I am not a medical professional, just someone who has injured herself over and over. I second the chiropracter -- mine is fantastic at helping me through spasms, whereas my primary doctor will only prescribe meds. The only other recommendation I have is alternating ice and heat. On for 15 minutes, off for 15 minutes...you might be surprised just how much that can help stop a spasm. Please rest up, take care, and see a professional. Good luck!

Wow. That sounds extremely painful. I've been having the same type pain in the left side of my neck/upper back since I did disc 14 which was chest, shoulders & triceps. Honestly I think I was working so hard to use the heavy weights that I must have had bad form and strained my neck. But I've had it before and it usually goes away, much like yours. I'm still hoping for the best but it sounds like you should go get checked out. That way you know you are taking the correct steps to healing the problem rather than hoping for the best. Go girl. Go now.

Let us know what you find out.

I hurt my lower back after doing Disc 14 and couldn't go to work the next day. I didn't workout for the rest of the week and used a heating pad. Actually, I am still using at night for another week.

When I returned to STS, for legs I went down in weights and modified my range of motion on the dead lifts and the plate lunges. If you don't feel better in a week, then I would see a doctor, but defintely take it easy for a while. I hope you feel better soon.

Thank you!

Thank you for all the suggestions and support. :)

It seems to have eased a bit today. I am able to turn my neck somewhat. I took it easy yesterday, and also fasted, to let my body devote resources to healing. I think I'm going to try to get into the doctor today (if I can get in), just to see what he says.

Sounds like others have experienced some similar issues, even with STS. Definitely, my upper body is not used to handling the very heavy weights needed to exhaust the lower body. I've been using versa-grips to help with hand issues, but the strain in the shoulders is still there. Hopefully, the upper body will strengthen with time.

I plan to take it easy at least the rest of the week, as far as exercise goes. I'm hoping I'm good on Monday, and I'll start week 2 over again. I am definitely going to be very careful picking up and putting down weights, and even more conscious of my form.

Thanks so much!

Here are a couple more things that i thought of that might help you. I had the mouse issue for computer work as well. My chiropractor told me to elevate my chair as high as I can, getting a footrest to compensate for the feet and that way my arm is not up on the desk as high. That helped. And also, whenever I increase weights I get shoulder and neck issues. My chiropractor and I finally figured out that I had low potassium. I am taking a lot of potassium on weight days and about 3 pills on cardio days as well as two magnesiums at the end of the day. This has helped prevent getting in bad shape muscle wise ever since. I really haven't had a problem since i started taking potassium on a regular basis. If you're not sure you have enough, a simple bloodtest can find out about that, maybe you can ask your doctor while you go see him.
Good luck, and I hope this helps!

Oh no! I'm so, so sorry you are in so much pain. I don't think this is a normal "put a heat wrap on it, take two ibuprofin, and call me in the morning" type pain. Has it gotten any better? When my husband hurts his back (one severe injury in the past makes it much more easily injured) he does put on heat with a Thermacare heat wrap and sits in a recliner for 2-3 days till it is better. The biggest thing is to rest your back completely and don't rush back into anything too quickly. (and 40 lb dumbbells for your squats - WOW!) When you start back, the most important thing as you know is your form. I would definitely scale back initially and be extremely careful - now that you've hurt it once, it will be easier to hurt it again. Make a conscious effort to try to relax your jaw and your shoulders and neck, tighten your core, etc. I really hope you feel better soon. Big hug to you. Keep us posted with how you're doing!

Healthy Vegan,
Something similiar happen to me in between disc 11 and 12 but it was my lower back. Luckily for me I was headed into recovery week. I didn't start working out again until that Thursday of recovery week. So I basically went a week with no workouts.

The worse part were the back spasms. I used my inversion table, pain killers and hot and cold packs to relieve the pressure and pain.

Hope you get better soon.

Update

Thanks so much for your advice Cendrine. I try to have my work space set up in the most ergonomically-correct way, but I know it could probably use some tweaking. I'm definitely going to try the things you suggested.

I'll also check out my potassium levels in the near future. I have a very clean diet, but maybe it's missing something.

Update: My neck and upper back got gradually better over the weekend. The second day they were much improved and from then on it's been gradual improvement. I fasted for 2 days to speed healing, and it did seem to be a more notable improvement on the second day (could be unrelated). When I got up this morning, it was still stiff and sore, but good enough for me to exercise. (Which is good, because it drove me NUTS to not exercise for the 4 days following the "incident"). I decided to repeat week 2 of Mesocycle 2. The first day was fine. The real test will be the legs disc on Wednesday, which is what I was doing when I hurt myself. I am definitely trying to be very careful at this point.

Thanks to everybody for your suggestions and thoughtful remarks. I've definitely felt like others had been in (or are in) the same boat.

I'm so glad you are feeling better! I'd be interested in your results when you get the potassium checked.

Good luck on your workout!
