In honor of jillybean........

Okay~since jillybean brought up the subject of "dumbbell horror," I thought it might help her healing to hear about some of our own "dumbbell horror" stories. :)

Here are mine from the past year:

-it doesn't happen EVERY time, but every few times or so, while doing a dumbbell french press, I will clock myself right upside the head while lowering it! ouch!

-while doing a tricep extension w/20#db, I clocked myself in the back of the head (it was a tad heavier than I was ready for!)

-and lets just say the term "skull crusher" is an appropriate term when you're dumb enough to let the barbell actually hit you in the forehead during barbell french presses!

So see jillybean~you're not alone in this! :)
Donna

Jillybean - I kept mine under my step during the aerobics portion and tripped over them... knocking my head into the wall and leaving a nice dent!

I haven't had anything of this sort happen to me. YET. I've read Jillybean's post & your's Donna & the reply you've gotten & couldn't help but laugh at all! I know it must have been very painful for all involved. But just like that Bare Naked Ladies song, "I'm the kind that laughs at a funeral." I watched my boss run into a glass door the other day. Laughed so hard, I thought I would get fired! Sorry for laughing!

You guys are the best! Hey, as long as I've humiliated myself already, why stop there? Four years ago, oh but it seems like yesterday, I was doing a Firm video. I had very long hair then. I liked to rest my dumbbells on my shoulders like the Firm instructors did. Well my frickin' ponytail someohow got tangled around my dumbbell during the leg presses and I fell off of the 14" step onto the concrete floor below. Man did that hurt. I ALWAYS keep my dumbbells at my sides now. Keep the stories coming - misery loves company!

I am laughing so hard it hurts...

This is one of the funniest threads we've ever done!

I've done EVERYTHING you've all described here, with the exception of Miss Jilly's ponytail story (honey, no one's gonna be able to top that one!)

I've also tripped on the carpet while sashaying and thus sashayed at full tilt directly into a wall (lovely image, isn't it?). I've fallen off the step while energetically doing around-the-world repeaters, ricochets, up-and-backs, flying angels, simple across-the-tops -- you name it, if there's a way to fall off the step I've done it. :)

It's truly a miracle that I don't spend half my life in a lower leg cast.

And now you guys are thinking, "Hey, why does Kathy S. wonder why her bad knee never totally heals??? DUH!!!" ;-)

RE: I am laughing so hard it hurts...

OMGoodness, you ladies are cracking me up!

I have lost my balance doing stepups with the barbell and just caught myself before crashing into a window.

I have crushed and tripped over toys while sashaying around my step doing Cathe's tapes - well, it LOOKED like I had enough room!

"Pain is weakness leaving the body."

A,hem, well, try dropping a 40lb dumb right smack on the edge of the very expensive glass top coffee table you got for Christmas a few years ago :-wow and being too afraid to even look and see how many shards it was broken into for a full five minutes.

Luckily it was not broken believe it not. Boy was I releived.
:p

It's okay to look back and laugh AFTER the fact right? :)

I was thinking hard about any mishaps that might have happened to me with dumbells - and nothing really stood out in my mind...

...until today. I was doing Leaner Legs (the reverse lunges when the back leg is on the raised step). And I got a bad itch in my forehead (probably from the sweat dripping off my hair)...

I raised my hand (with the 10 lb dumbell) to scratch the itch, and BANG - I hit my forehead with the dumbell! What was I thinking? I got such a head ache - but managed to finish off LL. I don't know what was worse - hitting myself, or the plies -man that workout kills me!

Susan

(Glad you're doing okay jillybean)

I have really been laughing here :7....I have such great pictures in my head and I can so relate.

I too have gone to wipe the sweat from my forehead and bonked myself! You do wonder what in the world you were thinking of to do such a thing....I knew I had a dumbell in my hand! I have tripped and sashayed into walls too...laughing all the while!

Has anyone else tried to refuse to 'touch the toe to the floor for a moment' while stretching the quads and hopped and floundered around a while before admitting to the need. I just don't want to admit sometimes that I can't always hold it that long! I want to be one of the big girls.

So sorry you were hurt Jillybean, your finger must still be quite sore....and I am glad you found the diamond!

ps. Thinking of laughing at funerals...does anyone remember the episode from the Mary Tyler Moore show when Chuckles the Clown died? Sounds not too funny, but I just couldn't stop laughing!

Yes, Susan!

I am assuming you mean the quad stretch where you pull one foot up behind your rear while standing? I teach fitness classes and whenever I have a new student, she/he always "hops & flounders" all over the room on that stretch! It is quite embarrassing for them but it is a "learned" stretch. PRACTICE makes perfect! Had to chuckle when I read your version of FLOUNDERING!!!

Speaking of Chuckles, I don't remember the episode with Chuckles, the clown? I think one of the funniest moments I could not quit laughing was when that squirrel is on Chevy Chases back and he doesn't know it but is running from the squirrel. I sit here busting up JUST THINKING about it. I think it's "Christmas Vacation" the one where the squirrel jumps out of the Christmas tree and everyone starts running from the room. Oh my gosh, too funny.http://www.plaudersmilies.de/laugh.gif

RE: Yes, Susan!

I can so relate to that - I got a fit of the giggles in the movie theater while watching "Arthur" - yes over 20 years ago. The movie starts with DUdley Moore laughing off camera and that got me going and I laughed too hard throughout the whole movie - icluding the scene where the butler died. Thinking about it still gives me the grins! Katie
