Imax 3 question

Thinking ergonomically here, I think a backpack loaded with bricks would probably be more practical Shelley.

Just an FYI to anyone reading this who might not be as advanced of an exerciser...

Someone asked Cathe this question in Ask Cathe and she said that she would not advise doing Imax 3 on an 8 inch step. She said that the risks outweighed the benefits.

I have always used an 8 inch step on all of the step workouts. On interval 7 I usually lower it just for that one. Love that workout!

I just tried the Imax 3 with the 8 inch step. It wasn't too bad. I definitely had moments where I was breathing heavily, but it was do-able.
The blasts that I had a little trouble with were:
1) the first one where you have to do the hop up with both feet exit side. I just modified it to a hop up with one leg because I didn't feel like crashing into the TV this morning.
2) The combo where you are doing 14 side lunges was also a little bit harder, but I enjoyed the added intensity there (vertically challenged people might not enjoy the added challenge though).

3)Oh and one combo it actually helped me on was that one where you are doing the plunge lunges and then you have the set where you go lower (the lower part was easier for me).

The step combinations that are in between the blasts were also quite do-able with the added height and actually still give you a little bit of a break between the blasts, but I think that is where you might really notice the extra height.

Just wanted to also tell you that, I normally just do the platform for Imax 3, but when I put the DVD in today, I thought I had Low-Max but when I saw it was Imax 3--I figured what the heck if it turns out to be too tough I'll just move my step back down. I know this sounds crazy, but sometimes I actually find Imax 3 to be easier than Low-Max because there are less of those repeater 7's and my mind is occupied the whole time. Don't get me wrong I still love Low Max!

And while I am emailing this super long saga--has anyone seen the new oatmeal commercial where people walk around with a scale chained to their leg? Cracks me up!

Cheers and Happy Friday!

Does an 8" step enhance your intensity that much? I have been using a 6" step ( except for LM ), and am very happy at that level. A long time ago I used and 8" and I didn't find the cardio gains any better in the long run.

I commend you all for being able to do that, especially with the 50 lb barbell, Shelley!:+

I'm with Dani. How tall are you ladies!?!?!? 8" is way up there for me- although I do use 8" for Low Max. I'm 5'2" and I don't know if I could get up on an 8" step during a regular routine!

Oh my! You know what--I stand corrected--I only did mine at a 6 inch height--I think! Ooops! I think that would be the equivalent of 2 risers on each side. I have one of those Step Reebok steps that connects like Legos, and I do it at the middle height not the highest, but I don't have a ruler to measure so I am guestimating.

I am 5'9" and that middle height on the Step Reebok is actually about all I am willing to try for my height. I think with the 8 inch I would be pushing it to maintain good form. Sorry for the misinformation! I meant well!

Hi, Spaz here again, okay so i looked at the step reebok step heights on the internet since I don't have a ruler handy, and I discovered that the heights vary from 6",8" and 10". So I did do the workout at 8" ( I think). My goodness--all this effort. I'm tired, and now I am going to take a nap (I wish).

>I was planning to do it with a 50 lb barbell on my shoulders.

Next time I do the workout, I'm going to tip my step on it's end, so it's a 40+ inch step! }(

I do Imax (the original) on an 8 inch, Body Max and MIC also on 8", but IMax 2 on a 6", still have to get IMax 3 though. I use whatever height Cathe uses.

I use an 8" step for all of Cathe's step routines and I'm 5'3", but I've been doing step with Cathe since the late 80s. I do modify the jumping jacks on and off the step on interval 7 of IMAX 3 and slow them down.

I do the same Rose. However, I am about to start doing Imax 2 on an 8" too since it's gotten a lot easier than it used to be.

Here's an update. I did Imax 3 today on an 8" step and it wasn't that bad at all. I didn't modify any of the intervals, and my legs are feeling it a tiny bit, but it really wasn't that hard. I'm 5'7", so that might have something to do with it, but I enjoyed it and it didn't hurt any worse than it did on a 6" step:p
