I'm sick (& need to whine)... advice, please?

HipChick

Cathlete
I've been sick for over a week. It started w/allergies, moved to my chest, & the rest is history. I've had severe chest congestion & such a bad cough that I wasn't able to sleep for 4 nights (after the 4th, my body shut down & I slept all day on the 5th). I was planning to ease back into exercise this morning but had trouble getting to sleep & felt like I should wait awhile longer. I know I need to give my body time to get better but I'm so tired of being sick & just want to get back to normal. I've slept the last 2 nights & the congestion in my chest is started to ease. I'm not coughing as much & never had a fever so I feel like I should try to start doing something again soon. I normally work out in the mornings (45 mins. to an hour of Cathe, since I've become addicted:eek:) but I feel like I need my sleep right now. Should I just wait another week, start doing something in the evenings, or force myself back into my old routine? Just feeling bad & looking for advice & motivation. Oh yeah, I've also been eating terrible too.x( Comfort food, you know? So I'm trying to get a handle on that, starting today! Sorry to whine but I'm just feeling down at the moment. Thanks in advance for any input anyone can offer. You guys are the greatest!

Thanks again,
Kel:)

Sounds like this really kicked you in the booty!!! I would definitely rest a little longer to make sure that you're over this. Forcing yourself to get back into it, especially as intense as Cathe is, is only going to hurt you in the long run and drain your reserves that are already low. Don't worry about losing ground, your body will remember where you left off and you will not lose much, if any, in the way of fitness until you are back on your feet!

Take it easy ( you probably already guessed that was what your body needed, but it's nice to hear "permission" isn't it?) and make sure you drink lots of fluids!

Hope you feel better soon!

{{{{{HUGS}}}}} and I'm sorry you're feeling bad. I think you should start to get a LITTLE exercise. I wouldn't be aggressive about it, but just start with a short walk for now and gradually increase your activity over the next couple of weeks. Walking is great for keeping your lungs open and will probably make you feel better in the long run.

ETA I want to emphasize that I'm NOT advocating power walking. I'm just talking about starting to get up and move a little. Small, short walks can be very healing in and of themselves. Also, if your symptoms are allergy related, walk indoors like at a mall or something. But by all means, do NOT overdo it and get plenty of rest.;)

OMG Kel, I am going through the same thing!! It started as allergies but is now in my chest. I am coughing and my nose is so plugged up I can't stand it. Three nights of no sleep and I was forced to down some nyQuil. Ugh. Sucky. :D

If you feel like you need sleep right now, then SLEEP. LISTEN to what your body is telling you. A week or so of being off exercise and eating isn't going to amount to a hill of beans in your overall fitness journey. You were working out and eating right before, and you will again.

Take it easy and feel better!!

Kel-
So sorry you've had the crud!
I so agree w/ Amy, REST REST REST... I truely believe that when our bodies shut down as yours did it is the universe giving us a little thump.... I bet you had small signs all along the way to slow it down a bit and probably didnt heed it.(so few of us do).. so when we don't listen we get a THUMP! No choice but to listen.
Take the time and heal... comfort food is not a bad thing when you need comfort... you'll be back at full speed soon.
REST

Kel,
Listen to your body. If it is telling you not to workout yet, don't. You will only prolong the sickness. You could try to take it easy and take a walk for the next few days. Might help loosen up the phlegm! :) Take care!

Edited to add: Have you tried Mucinex? My husband's chest cold cleared quite quickly with this OTC. :)

Thanks so much to everyone for your kind words of advice & support.

Amy - Yes, it does help to have "permission" for some reason & I'm trying to drink lots of fluids. I got some OJ at the store last night & I'm going to start guzzling that, along with lots of water. Thanks again!

Michele - Yes, that's what I thought too. I've just felt so lethargic, even going to the grocery store peps me up. I think just starting to move a little will help. But I promise to take it slow.

Traci & Melissa - Thank to both of you. I will continue to rest & listen to my body. Also, no (Melissa) I haven't tried Mucinex but I had another person recommend it. Perhaps I'll have to give it a try.

Sparrow - Oh my goodness, bless your heart! I'm so sorry you're dealing with this too! I also ended up turning to NyQuil so I can totally understand what you're going through & I hope you feel better real soon too. (((HUGS)))

Thanks again to all of you and anyone else who follows. This is a very special group & like I said before "you guys are the greatest!"

Kel

Hi Kel,

I agree with everyone who is telling you to take it easy! I'm not a doctor, but your symptoms sound awfully close to something I had awhile back that turned out to be bronchitis. It is easy to aggravate a cold into something worse if you don't slow down! Drink lots of water, give yourself permission to relax, and only if you really feel up to it, take short walks (no hills). Hope you feel better soon.
