First, I wanted to say Thanks for the people who post here. It is always friendly and encouraging here, unlike some other forums where people can be quite rude. I know if I post here I will get friendly responses and sincere encouragement.
Secondly, I passed the ACE Personal trainer exam, and I also found out that I received the "Gold" level Turbokick kickboxing certification (but that isn't as important as the personal trainer cert). I just needed to share my excitement!
Thanks.

Great job! I know it was hard work, but isn't it a great feeling!

RE: Congratulations!

Hey Francine,

Turbokick is prechoreographed, and it comes with music and you teach the basic layers to your class and once they get that (it may take 2-5 classes) then I would add on the more difficult layers.
A sample from Round 13 is
Jab cross jab cross facing right (at 2:00) then jab cross jab cross left (at 10:00), then triple jab right(front at 12:00), cross left, triple jab rt, cross left, then bob back (while ducking down) 2X, and 2 jumping jacks.
Then jab rt, cross lt, jab rt, rt knee (all at 12:00), and back kick left (back kick would actually be towards 7:00 versus 6:00)
We use the clock analogy to help visualize where you should be kicking and punching.
The way you and kick and punch is different; it is meant to really mimic boxing. Thus uppercuts are out, up, and away, not straight up, as you are visualizing punching your attacker in the chin. It is hard to explain without seeing it!

Cari CONGRATS!!!! GREAT JOB...
I have a question... now that your are certified ... what does that qualify you to do ??? Teach class??

Thanks!
Well, I already had my AFAA primary group instructor cert, and with the Turbokick cert I can teach "Turbokick" classes.
I obtained the PT cert because I have a telephone fitness coaching business and I wanted to have more credibility.
Also, I really want the ACE Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant Certification (That sounds so interesting to me), and you have to have your PT cert first.
So, the PT cert hasn't really enabled me to do anything, since I don't plan on becoming a full-time in person trainer. But I inquired about a personal training position at 24 Hour Fitness and I would get paid more per hour by having a national certification. I've noticed a lot of places in Dallas (where I'm at), want a Cooper Institute Certification, because the Cooper Institute is based here and it is so prestigious.

RE: Congratulations!

Thank you for the detailed run down--I can visualize turbokick now!You really have educated yourself in the fitness field! I wish you MUCH success!Your friend in fitness~~Francine

Congratulations Cari!!!

Ok, question: How hard do you think the exam was for you?? I am wondering if this exam would be much easier for someone who already knows alot about exercise, fitness, and nutrition. Anybody have a really good base knowledge before going in to the test?? I know the anatomy part would need some reviewing, but I just wonder how much easier it might be if you already have some knowledge....anyone???

Could you tell me more about your telephone firness coaching? Is it through Fit by Phone? This also interests me.

RE: Cari and Naughtoj -

Congratulations, Cari! I took the ACE group fitness instructor exam back in early '97, and it was like walking through mud! I know how hard you worked to get the ACE-PT test nailed down. Good luck on your phone training / coaching business!

Naughtoj, I certainly think it helps if you already have a bit of baseline knowledge of exercise science and nutrition before embarking on the ACE or other certifying exams. When I studied for the ACE exam, I didn't have any real foundation of knowledge; I was starting from scratch, and I had to work triple hard just to master the basic concepts as well as the esoterica. If you're thinking about getting certified, you're well situated if you already have some studies under your belt!

Naughtoj,

I didn't have a great baseline of knowledge. I have been lifting weights for a long time, but that doesn't really prepare you.
I will say, though, that I only had 2 months to prepare and I passed, and I only studied on Sundays (I read 2 chapters a week).
Then I spent the week before the exam reviewing the study guide.
I didn't have the money to do one of those review sessions (by exercise, etc., I believe), but I think that would have helped me out a lot. If you can afford it I would recommend that. I believe Honeybunch did one of those review sessions.
The first 3 chapters were the worst because they were very scientific: anatomy, kinesiology, etc.
Hope this helps!
Cari

Hi,

My fitness coaching business is by phone, with one session a week, and unlimited e-mail coaching. It isn't through Fit by Phone; I am going solo on this. It would be nice to be affiliated with someone but I don't have $4000 to be "trained" by them!
You can check out my website at www.yourpersonalfitnesscoach.com
It will explain it in more detail!
Cari

The review was VERY helpful. I may have been able to pass without it, but not in the 8 weeks total I took to prepare for the test, start to finish.
