I'm a beginner

Hi there,
After looking at the clips of the weight training DVD's I am begining to worry that they may be too advanced for me.
Is there a DVD that could suit a beginner who has never done a program like that before.. I've really only fooled around with weights in the gym, never been taught or shown any form whatsoever.
All the programs are labelled as being 'advanced'... I hope that doesn't mean they will be too hard for the novice to follow.
Am I moving into something that may get me out of my depth or can I do what everyone else is doing and just take it slower.. will the programs allow for it?
ALSO.. are there any other Australians in this forum?
Thanks again,
Kelly:)

Hi Kelly,
I am not Cathe of course, but I will tell you that until I started doing Cathe's workouts I had never lifted weights either. In fact the first video of hers I ever bought is Circuit Max I have yet to do, but I have Terminator on DVD and I love it, it took time for me to learn some of the exercises and there are still a few I have trouble with lol.
I love Maximum Intensity Strength, and I really like Power Hour, I have those on DVD. So just take it slow and before you know it, you'll be hooked like the rest of us:7 ............ God bless you... Rhonda :7

One video that is often recommended for beginners (and that includes a step section as well as a weights section) is the "Wedding" video. You might want to try that out.

MIS is a good next step. Just don't feel obligated to use the weights that Cathe and crew do. That's something to work up to (and possibly excede) in the future. So if Cathe is lifting 40# and you're at 20#, that's perfectly fine. Just use the weight that challenges you without straining you.

After the wedding tape and MIS (since I know you'll be hooked!) you can move on to the PS series, then PH, then slow and heavy and the pyramids.

You are embarking on the beginning of a journey! Enjoy it!

Hi Kelly!

My very first weight tape was the Wedding vid. Then, I proceeded to MIS and then the PS series. (pretty much what Kathryn recommended) I had no trouble at all learning the moves, good form and so on even if it meant lowering my weights from what Cathe uses. It took no time at all to up my weights and match her. (Always listen to your body and use weights that challenge YOU but keep your workout safe.) I have all of Cathe's tapes now. WELCOME! Let us know what you decide. Have FUN!

I agree with the other ladies and their recommendations. Really couldn't go wrong with any of them.

I would add that you could start with the Pure Strength series as well. The moves are done at a slow enough pace that you could work on your form. As has been suggested, I would not recommend starting with the amount of weight Cathe and company are using, but would go much lighter. In fact, you may want to do the workout one time through without any weight to get familiar with the exercises and form. I guarantee that even with no weight you will feel the inner and outer thighs with Cathe's floorwork in PS Legs and Abs }( .

Just my thoughts.

Thank you Rhonda, Kathryn, DebbieH and Sabine,
I appreciate your help with this issue.. because I have never seen anything like Cathe here in Australia I have nothing to compare her to so I naturally felt it looked out of my league. You've given me the confidence to know I that I can do it to.
Let me tell you though, Australia is suppose to be a sporting nation yet the only workout DVD's I have come across here are Yoga and Pilates and basic aerobics .. it's enough to drive you to distraction!
Thanks again for all your patient help.. I shall keep you all posted on how I get on.
Have a great day!

Hi,

I'm new to lifting weights also and I've been using Pyramid Upper Body (have yet to tackle Pyramid Lower Body). The weights I use are light in comparison to Cathe's and I'm going to continue working up the strength to go heavier. Just make sure that whatever videos/DVDs you buy, that you go light and work up. :)
