IKEA, thoughts and comments

Thinking about purchasing "apt.sized" or "condo-sized" furniture now for my future home. Time for a change....The nearest store is 2 hours away either Detroit or Chicago. It will be bedroom, dining room, and living room.

I like Ikea but beware that most of their stuff requires assembly. Although it's not high end, it's stylish and affordable.

I usually buy more accent pieces and accessories from there as opposed to big pieces of furniture.

I agree w/ Elle. We actually bought our bedroom furniture there about 12 yrs ago. It's held up okay but if we were ever to move it wouldn't survive. And my 10 yr old daughter's bed and dresser are from there. Again, has to be assembled and you do kind of get what you pay for, but it definitely serves it's purpose in our lives right now.

You must be in my kind of area - the Chicago and Detroit stores are about 2 hrs. away. I've been to Chicago/Schaumburg one but not ... is it in Canton?

There are two in the Chicago area. Schaumburg and Bolingbrook.

We have lots of Ikea - just really examine how the pieces are made. Some are better built than others. And have a cinnamon roll and some swedish meatballs when you go - YUMMY!

I like IKEA. Yep, they are inexpensive and not heirloom quality, but I don't have a problem with that. I really never understood the concept of buying wildly expensive furniture that you can't afford to pass it down to your children. They may not want it/like it/or it may not fit there space. Also IKEA is exactly my decorating style, so for me IKEA is great.

JCM, I live in West MI and can get to ChicagoLand in 2 hours and just over 2 hours to Detroit. My plan is go to Canton. Art Van doesn't carry smaller scale furniture though. Thanks for the comments on assembly, I have heard about it too.

Yes, your DD can join me. Right now, I am thinking Wednesday. No truck but I am calculating delivery into the cost from the delvery cost calculator on their website. This stuff will be moved once. Surprising, I've driven by the one in Canton numerous times since it's not that far from where I grew up. Please PM so I can arrange to meet your daughter, thanks. It would be fun to shop with someone else.
