Ideas for carbs?

Hi! Wondering if anyone has any unique ideas for carbs? I watch my carbs very closely and try to make sure I get enough of the right ones! Any ideas on good carbs, particularly for snacks etc. I need to cut more bread out of my diet and replace with a healthier carb. I get terrible afternoon "sweet" cravings... I have been eating lowfat graham crackers, yogurt etc. but am getting sick of it.

What % of carbs do most of you usually eat? I went to a trainer/nutrition expert for a couple sessions a couple months ago and he put me on about 60% carbs and also increased my protein. He said the carbs are so high because of my intense workout program.

I am really struggling with how to eat that many carbs that aren't bad for me!! I do alright in the morning because I eat oatmeal from our cafeteria at work and an egg, glass of o.j., and piece of toast at home before I go to work. It's the rest of the day that kills me!!! Any ideas you have on different foods will be so much appreciated!

Thanks!!!!!
Pam

Hi Pam,

I eat a high carb, moderate protein diet without really working at it. Lots of vegies & quality grains. Ideas:

lunch: chopped vegie salad, vegie soup w/ a sandwich, egg white omelettes loaded w/ vegies, or dinner leftovers

snacks: fruit (dried or fresh) w/ almonds, plain yogurt w/ fresh fruit, cottage cheese & tomatoes, cereal w/ fruit, homemade muffins, pancakes, or waffles. I sometimes have to resort to an energy bar if I'm out or need to fuel right before a workout.

dinner: stir fry over rice or noodles, pastas loaded w/ vegies, chopped vegie salads, grain casseroles or salads. If I have poultry or fish (rather than a plant protein), I make sure that the side dishes are nutrient dense carbs.

Liz Applegate's book "Eat Right, Play Hard" & Nancy Clark's sports nutrition book are great resources.

One of those 8 oz. poptop cans of pork and beans will give you 46 gms of great for you carbs, only 3 gms of fat, and plenty of fiber. It's one of my favorite snacks--I don't even bother to heat it up. --Karen

I just had a thought about carbs earlier tonight.I am trying to get rid of that last 10 pounds and it isn't easy.Altough I tend to think that I am trying but I am really not on a diet.if I actually ate clean,I can do wonders b/c my work out schedule is pretty advanced.
But my thoughts were, that I am going to TRY to eat 6 meals a day.I am going to TRY to do my work outs before I eat. Now, the first meal of my day is going to be protein and then 2 hours later I will have a mixture of both carbs and protein.ANd then the last meal of my day, which may be around 8-9o'clock ,will be just protein again.
Like I say, I am going to TRY this.I have trouble sticking to things.Altough when I started working out and eating better the adjustment went really good.It all came very natural. Now that I am trying to spice things up a little, it isn't so easy.I wonder why??
Anyway, I don't know if this helped any,
Beat of luck

The book Body Rx which has been talked about on this forum before has good carb advice and makes it simple. It contains lists that break down carbs into "green" or eat as much as you want, "yellow" or eat in moderation or "red" dont eat more than once a week, ie. stuff like cakes, pies.

Thanks for the wonderful advice:) I think I am going to pick up the BodyRx book. I have seen a lot of references to it on many of the posts.

I have a lot of learning to do about good carbs, bad carbs, when to eat what etc... It is so depressing because I have struggled keeping wt off for years. I gained a ton of wt when my baby was born (he's 2.5 yrs) and have just recently started to finally lose the weight. I did the Body For Life 9 months after he was born and I lost a ton of weight but once I stopped I ended up bigger than I started! My Dr. said I hurt my metabolism more than I helped it. After that, it was like my body just wouldn't let me lose it, no matter what. Like I said I went to a trainer for free 2 times at my club and he said my problem was about 90% diet!!!! I have followed the program he gave me and have lost about 17 lbs:) It is just soooooo depressing after all the hours I spent working out knowing they were almost all for nothing!!!!

I just need to become more educated on this stuff and get the most out of my workouts. I like that there are so many conversations about EVERYTHING on these boards. I have already learned so much:)

Any idea where the best place to get the BodyRX book is?

I got mine at Barnes & Noble. I've also seen it at Border's Book Store. If they dont have it at B&N you can have them order it for you and have it shipped to the store that way you dont have to pay shipping and handling like you would if you ordered it online.

Or if you're a cheapskate like me, you can check it out from your local library. After reading it, if you decide to follow the program, you can always purchase a copy to have on hand.

I found the best "potato" chips in the world. They are called Sun Chips and they're a multi-grain chip. 1 oz has 2 grams of protein and 2 grams of fiber. And they are delicious! I highly recommend them if you're looking for good healthy snacks.

You gotta like cottage cheese for this one, but if you also have a sweet tooth I like Kellog's Low Fat Whole Wheat waffles topped with 1/4 c. 2% cottage cheese and 1T Smuckers No Sugar Preserves. Each one is about 125 cals with about a 50-30-20 c-p-f split. My kids say it makes them nauseous, but to me it's a real treat!

I eat BFL which is about 40% carbs 40% protein 20% fat.

Carb choices for me are the unprocessed carbs:
oatmeal
cream of wheat/rice
brown rice
potato
sweet potato
occasionally WW bread like Ezekial or WW pasta
barley
beans, beans and more beans

And veggies are freebies
