When the weather warms up (above 0 ) I like to go skating outdoors. Low impact, right? Then why do my knees hurt afterward? When I get in the car to drive home they are soooo sore, mostly when they're bent. Any ideas? Suggestions to avoid it (other than avoiding the skating )
Could it be that you're just using muscles around the knee that you might not use normally?
I don't think skating is bad for the knees, per se. When I had my knee surgery, my PT had me using a slide board (which emulates skating) during my therapy.
Above 0? Brrrrrrr! Is it just the first time you go skating or every time? I am assuming it is because it is something different from what you are used to doing, plus, you probably go for at least an hour instead of building up??? Just an idea...

Well, my knees are totally shot from skating, but that's from landing on them trying to get my jumps down. I could see them hurting though if you are just starting to skate more. You spend a lot of time in a bent knee position while skating and you are probably using small muscles right around the knee for stabilization that you do not use typically use. It's probably something that will ease with time.
thanks for all your answers. It probably is due to the use of the muscles around the knees, b/c,yes, they are pretty much bent the whole time. the sage advice re: ibuprofen...good idea
