I Probably Shouldn't Have Done This...

...but I'm totally fed up. One parent on my street lets the teenagers (including his) congregate in and around his yard. The kids eat their snacks and simply toss the wrappers, bottles and cans where ever, usually in the street! (I thought kids today were indoctrinated with environmentalism?!) We've talked to the parents. They agree it's a problem but in whatseems to be the prevalent parenting style these days, they talk a good game but never actually do anything to rectify the situation. So, this morning, after DH and I went for a walk, I gathered all the garbage, including the cigarette butts and dumped it all in his front yard. It wasn't bags and bags or anything but now I'm like, oops, shouldn't a done THAT!

Temper temper :p

I don't blame you. I kust wonder how long it will take them to pick up the trash from their own yard. Please--report back.

*snort* *snicker* I probably would have done the same thing, Sparrow! It should be his mess to clean up! Maybe he'll put out a small garbage can by the street so his kids can take a hint. (WTH are they doing smoking anyway?!?) There's a neighbor down the street from me (with a teenager)who has put a "No Loitering" sign on their front fence! LOL!

I've yelled at cars going too fast down my street. We don't have sidewalks and there are kids at bus stops and people walking their dogs everywhere. Some have stopped and I've gotten in their face to tell them to SLOW DOWN. I think we have every right to help keep our neighborhood clean and safe.

I would do it too. Now your next step is call your town's code enforcement department & have a summons issued. Pretty much every town in the country has an ordinance prohibiting garbage on the front lawn. }(

I know of someone, similar problem, but it was dog poop. He gathered it up for a few weeks, in a what became a soggy paper bag, and then "delivered" it to the owner.

So you are not as bad as you think :)

I would have done the same thing too. Why should the whole neighborhood have to put up with his kid's (and company's) laziness.

You absolutely did the right thing. If you were my neighbor I would be thanking you for taking the initiative!

I would have done the same thing. Some teens don't give a *bleep* about anything, especially because they aren't the ones that have to live there. You deserve to have a clean street too. We have a 2 story 3 houses down and acrosss the street from us. They must have an older son who is in his early 20's living there. Him and his friends leave their beer bottles, etc. in the front yard every weekend. Mind you we have an HOA. Our HOA just sent every home owner a letter saying that because a hand full of home owners in our sub division were late too many times, the HOA was going up to 32 dollars instead of staying at 30 dollars. Mind you it's only 2 bucks a month, but charge them not us. Sorry to jack your thread, but I hate when teens/young adults do that.:)

P.S. It sounds like he is a single dad? If so, he is probably just trying to look cool for the kids or keep his son happy w/ him.

Jen-
Yep, the guy 2 doors down from me has 2 rottweillers I caught one doing his business in my yard at 5:30. I asked him to pick it up so I wouldn't have to leave it on his porch. He just apologized and said okay.

I totally would have done the same thing - good for you for sticking to your guns!

This reminds me of my parents' ex-neighbors several years ago (my parents have moved since this happened). Their neighbors had a couple of teenage daughters who were very attractive. That, right there, is reason enough to keep them under lock and key at all times. But these people were clueless - they would leave their teen daughters home alone for entire weekends sometimes. And the daughters were, shall we say... partyers. And they liked to party with... teenage boys (or maybe even older boys?). My parents found several used condoms in their backyard and stuck to their roof from where the teenage girls had tried to get rid of the "evidence" by throwing it out their bedroom windows. EW EW EW!!! My parents never said anything to the neighbors because honestly, how do you approach that one... "Ummm, I've got some things here that your daughters left in our yard..." (holding up condoms with a pair of tongs) And the parents were so oblivious, they never would have believed it anyway. My parents were pretty glad when those girls went off to college! :)

In YOUR backyard and on YOUR roof?? Hmmmmmmm.........sure it was the neighbor girls, Emily! That's your story and you're sticking to it, eh?!? ;-)

Just kidding!!

Sparrow,

I just did something very similar! I live in an apartment in NYC that has a terrace. The girls upstairs don't have a terrace, and they smoke by their window and flick the (still lit) cigarettes out the window. They pile up and one of them even lit my wicker chair on fire. I got fed up and collected the butts for a few weeks and left the huge pile outside their apartment door. I also reported them to the management company, who threatened them with fines next time they do it. Haven't seen one cigarette since!
