I passed my PT exam!

Hi all:

I want to thank those of you who responded to my questions re: PT certifications. I was on the fence among a few different directions, so I decided to start with AFAA and go from there. Just got the "you passed" letter today, so I am ready to make phone calls and network!

A few months ago, I posted about training people, especially on-site training for those with disordered eating and exercise fears (too much or too little). I aim to teach balance and listening to the body, and yes, I've had experience with my own therapy as well as working under a dance/movement therapist. I am also looking into counseling courses along my path. One step at a time.

I look forward to continue visiting this site, gaining insight from you all. Again, thanks for the suggestions and encouragement (I did a quick search to look for the usernames of ppl who gave tips, but I couldn't find the posts...anyway, thank you!)

Take good care,
Caroline

Congratulations! I was a personal trainer for 5 years and really enjoyed it! It can be a very rewarding career. Good luck and have fun!

Congratulations Caroline. I am also interested in getting certified. Can you tell me a little bit about AFAA?

Great job Caroline!! I knew you could do it. Now that your confidence is up, you should look into starting to study for some of the others (ACSM,ACE,NSCA, etc). Some of these organizations may offer some certs that directly apply to the specific demographic you're looking to help.

Thanks, everyone! This is really exciting -- You know when you wake up in the morning and remember exciting news? That's how I felt -- I'm using this personal training as a launchpad to pursue some things close to my heart and leave the daily grind of my day job (or night job since I work overnights!)...Anyway, it's a relief to have this first tiny step under my belt.

Carolyn, you were sooo helpful and encouraging. I will definitely look into the other organizations. One day at a time. How are you and your business doing, by the way?

Letswork - I signed up for the AFAA workshop about 6-8 weeks before the workshop/exam weekend. Okay, confession, I studied little, but I was looking forward to the hands-on learning of the workshop, which I needed since I come from a non-science background. (i'm journalism and could write or talk my way through an exam, but multiple choice makes me sweat more than cathe!)

I had an excellent presenter, he loved teaching, and while I was a little nervous for the kinesiology, I kept the perspective that I learned a lot, and I looked forward to learning more and moving forward regardless of my "passing" outcome. I did hear AFAA was the easiest...Maybe, especially with the workshop where someone is there to answer questions about flexion, rotation, scapular adduction, etc. etc. etc.!!! Luckily, I did pass, but I've got oodles to learn.

I've also been certified through AFAA for group fitness for about seven years...that was truly an easy certification, at least when I took it.

Anyway, feel free to ask more questions about the exam...Remember everyone starts somewhere. For a while, it took me forever to decide which certification b/c I wanted it to be "right" the first time, but I also remind myself to get away from the black/white thinking. "Just do it" as my favorite clothing company says.

Cheers!
;)

Congrats:+ :+ :+ Was it hard trying to become a PT? When I'm old enough, I want to train to become a PT/ Fitness insturctor (like Cathe). What kinds of stuff did you have to do to get your certifacation? For example, tests, demos, your own training, ect.

Once again, Congradulation!

~Adri;-)
