I need Help for My Sugar Addiction

Anyway, what got me started was a great book called "The Sugar Addict's Guide to Total Recovery" by Kathleen DesMaisons (sp?). It talks about what chemical processes are going on in the brain with sugar and ANY addiction, and how some people are more prone to addiction than others.

The book suggested a series of steps to start with. The first was making sure you eat breakfast each morning with protein. Actually every meal should have some protein. Just by doing that my blood sugar leveled out so much.

It's a day by day battle and I still crave sweets just as much now as I ever did. BUT, I feel better, have more energy, ect. Good luck and feel free to PM me if you need some sugar addiction support!:D

Bethany, I ordered this book after reading your post. It came today...and I can't put it down. Thanks SO much for the great tip!

Cinammon supplements (I forgot the source) really helped me with sugar and cravings. You can get cinammon from Dollar General for about 3 or 4 dollars. Also adding more protein to your diet. Caffiene also spurs sugar, for example, that is why coffee and doughnuts go so well together. Hope this helps.

Perfect 10 Diet

Hi Amy, check out the Perfect 10 Diet by Dr. Aziz. Although I did not lose weight following it (my original intention), it is amazing how little I crave carbs or sugar by following his guidelines for the past 5 weeks.

The first 3 weeks is the most hardcore, but yet, not all that bad, and is where you will break your cravings. It's basically a paleo style diet for 3 weeks, then you can slowly add back grains, even whole grain breads and pastas for the long term. You get your carbs from fruits, vegetables, and limited dairy. I found after the second week, I was able to add in some VERY dark chocolate (80% +) and it did not make me crave more sugar.

Good luck in whatever path you choose to take, cutting out sugar is a good idea. Oh one other great thing so far, I get cystic acne, generally, at least 2 to 4 occurrences a month, and so far since following this diet, I have not had one appear yet in 5 weeks (knock on wood, the reduction of sugar will continue to keep that issue at bay).

I am so happy I came across this thread! I've become a full-blown sugar addict in the past few years (after growing up without a sweet tooth--I was more a savory/salty person), and now I can't seem to shake its grip. Thank you so much for the recommendations in this thread! I've been struggling with this since the beginning of the year, since I made it my New Year's resolution to drastically reduce the amount of sugar in my eating (outside of a teaspoon here or there in my oatmeal or coffee or whatnot). It's been easy to give up the added sugar in foods I buy--I'm able to avoid those now--but my downfall is cakes, cookies, etc. It's not just the sweetness I crave, but the texture and "bite" of those foods. I know it's just a matter of rewiring my brain and all, but easier said than done :).
