I made it in the local paper!

Hi Everyone, this is what the Shelton-Mason County Journal said about me. This doesn't happen to me everyday, so I wanted to share.

Woman says loose dogs are not at fault

Jane McBride has been talking to the Mason County Commission about her frustrations with animals, particularly dogs, running loose on her property.

Last week she described seeing pit bulls and big black dogs frequent her property, bark loudly and generally scare her and her family. Because of these roaming canines, her family doesn't feel safe to enjoy the nearby lake or use other buildings on their property. Her family lives on Sandy Lake Road, near Shelton.

"These animals scare us and our neighbors don't do anything about it," she said on March 20.

Recently, a dog started barking at her husband, who had to shoo it away with a bb gun. She said this disruption to their peace and privacy isn't just recent and has been going on for 16 years. "We just have to stop it," she said.

McBride said she has discussed this matter with the Mason County Sheriff Office and was told her family could shoot the animals if they feel threatened. "We don't want to shoot the animals. It's not their fault," she said. "It's the fault of the owners for not controlling their animals."

She appeared again before the commissioners on Tuesday, this time presenting a signed petition to keep dogs in the county either on leashes or within the boundaries of their owners' property, instead of roaming freely around the county.

Commissioner Lynda Ring Erickson asked Betty Wing, the county's director of central operations, to make sure to involve McBride in an upcoming meeting to examine current laws regarding dogs and decide whether they just need to better enforce what's current or make changes.

Of course they misquoted me, and it was much serious than the paper says. But hey, I made it in the paper. My 15 minutes of fame. Wish it was peace on earth, but, this will have to do for now.

Janie

The idea is to die young as late as possible.

Go Janie!! I am so happy you are getting the attention you deserve on this matter. I agree it is the owners, not the dogs that are at fault! Please keep us posted with any new developments.

Good job, Janie!
You should be proud of yourself for taking a stand. I'm sure you're speaking for many othres who just never had the gumption to say anything.

As for misquotes: they don't seem to have done as badly as our university paper has done when quoting me (basically claiming I say the exact opposite of what I say!).

That is very cool Janie. Nothing makes elected officials take action more than bad PR. You know, you should write a letter to the editor that really lays out the specifics of your position--that'll really get them moving. ;-) It'd be sure to be published--in my experience the local papers just love it when people write their stuff for them.

Congratulations on taking a stand and having your local newspaper take note! To paraphase Margaret Meade: "never underestimate that a small group of thoughtful people can change the world. Indeed, it's the only thing that ever has." Good luck with getting some changes! Deb

It's really sad that you have to force your neighbors into doing the right thing. They'd be doing both you and their dogs a favor by containing them. Their dogs would be safe from getting hit by traffic (or a BB!) and they can lose their homeowner's insurance if their dogs bite someone. It's not that hard to be a good neighbor. But good for you for trying to do something about it. I hope it works!
