I have read here for months about steel cut oats and how so many of you love them and all the different & creative ways you fix them and I finally bought some.
I just had it for my dinner and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVED it!
I didn't know how I wanted to fix it since I knew I would love many of the ways I'd read about, so I had sugar on the table for dh, and then also natural peanut butter, milk, Splenda brown sugar, walnuts, and bananas.
Funny thing was.......I liked it plain. With nothing at all!
Then I thought that the homemade applesauce, made with splenda that I'd just made would taste good with it , so I mixed some in and it was DELISH!!!!!:9 Tasted a little like an apple crisp!! I ended up eating the whole bowl like that. YUMMO!
Had that and a piece of homemade banana bread and it was an awesome dinner. Yummy, satisfying and filling! Dh even loved it and a few minutes after we'd finished said he couldn't believe how full he was from CEREAL !!! Me too!
I know I'll be eating them often this winter when it's cold and snowy out!!!
I'm so thankful for all the good ideas I get here!
There are so many creative people here with awesome ideas. Thank you for taking the time to share them!!!:)

I didn't do anything special , just followed the directions on the pkg.
Boil 3 cups of water, add 1 cup oats and cook for 10 - 20 minutes.

In case you didn't guess from my other post, I highly reccommend them! :D ha!

I love them, too.
Nuttier flavor that regular oats.

If you don't have time to cook them every morning, here's what I do: I cook 3-4 servings at once, put 2-3 in microwaveable cereal bowls and refrigerate, and eat the other serving. The next couple of days, I get out the refrigereated oatmeal (which is now in one big mass!) and chop it up with a spoon, add some soymilk, and microwave.

I recently had steel cut oats made with vegetables with savory flavors instead of sweet and it was delicious! Also, in the past I have put steel cut oats in vegetable soups just like you would barley and it's yummy.

Me too! Kathyrn, that's what I do too. I alternate steel cut oats w/my egg white omelet. Yum!:9 I get tired of having the same thing every morning.

I love steel cut oats, have them every morning. I cook them at night, 4 cups boiling water to 1 cup steel cut oats. Bring water to a boil, add the steel cut oats, turn off heat, cover and let sit over night. They cook up perfectly this way. Gives you about a week or so of 1/2 cup servings. Saves me a lot of time doing it this way.

Good for you Becky! They are yummy arent' they?! I am like you, and can totally enjoy them plain, but I do prefer a dried fruit of some sort added to it. I had blueberries this morning in mine. MMMmmmmmm......

When I don't have my favorite coach's oatmeal I cook up a pot of steel cut oats in my iddy bitty rival crock pot (sprayed with pam first so it cleans oh so easily). The night before I put 1/4 cup steel cup oats in with 1 cup water and wake up the next morning to one hot easy fresh breakfast or sometimes I make a double batch if I want some later in the day. Yum.

Huh, I make them a little differently than you ladies. Instead of water to boil them in I use Light Vanilla Soy Milk, and that is my favorite. I've tried them with water, but my favorite is the soy milk version. I then add a little bit of cinnamin and some sugar free syrup. Tastes almost like an oatmeal cookie! So yummy!

Hey Guys,

Steel Oats sounds yummy, were do you buy it? I love oatmeal, eat it for breakfast about 3 times a week. I eat the instant Quaker, are the steel Oats better for you. Does it have protein in it. Thanks.

I made them last night and my children were begging for more.
Did you know that you can also bake them? Just place the oats and liquid (we use soymilk) in a casserole with a lid. I also usually add a cinnamon stick and vanilla. Bake at 350 for 45 minutes to one hour, stirring a few times during the process. You can stir in extra liquid after baking to make them as creamy as you like. I like this method because you do not need to stand over the stove and stir them.

Also, if you would rather cook them on the stovetop, you can soak them overnight to reduce the cooking time.

Hey Guys,

I asked were to buy Steel Oats. Can someone tell me please, I am going to Giant Eagle's today. Can I find them there? Thanks.

Hi Teddygirl,

I'm not sure what area you live in, but I can get them at Trader Joe's and Dominick's.

HTH!
