I HATE lunges!

I don't like them either. My knees always hurt doing this move and I always feel like I am going to get a charley horse in my calf.

I do the same as Allison & Cynthia--I always do lunges with the front foot elevated. I do static lunges on the smith machine, it really helps to keep proper form.

These days I just do one set of 30 static lunges right after 30 squats--it's a killer! It's the only weight w/o that has me sweating more than a cardio w/o!

I LOVE LUNGES!!!

In fact...I love them so much that I have a shirt that says I love Lunges! Giggle.... One of my students a few years ago got it made for me for Christmas! I did a LOT of lunges in class (wink wink!). I think they are much more effective (to me) than squats. But, it's a personal preference! I'm sorry that many of you don't like them!

I definately LOVE the results from doing them, but they HURT my knees SO bad.. I have not tried any of the modifications mentioned above yet, but do have the Transfirmer with incline so will be trying them the next workout that requires lunges! :) some have been blessed with joints that can handle lunges and squats, but I on the other hand have had knee pain since I was in high school... :D

It's nice to know I'm not the only one with a love-hate relationship with lunges. The suggestion about starting without weights is a very good one. I have also found that my success (or lack thereof) with lunges in a workout depends on how quiet my core is. If my core is quiet and strong, my lunges are SWEET! If my core is all wiggly, my lunges are too. So when I do lunges, I focus on keeping my core upright, strong, and quiet. My recommendation, work on strengthening your core and you will have less wobble in your lunges. Be patient, keep working, and you will get there!

I set up my step in the incline position (like the Firm transformer) and this seems to help me maintain good form lunges. Great for glutes! I also do one legged (bulgarian) squats.

I like to use my slanted step for these...I still have " THE FIRM" transformer that is great for them...That seems to work my glutes more + I dont experience any knee pain. Its good to vary it all anyway, right?

Walking lkunges are/ will always be my biggest dread factor- very taxing on my knees but mainly because they're HARD! lol:D
